Now been refurbished, extended (slightly) and reopened about a year ago. Still very friendly with a good selection of well-kept local ales. Doesn't serve food (apart from crisps etc), but probably better for it. A very popular local pub but also welcoming to visitors. If it weren't located 250 miles away from home it would be my regular haunt.

Please note that this pub has ceased trading and is no longer open.

Without doubt Leek's most esoteric drinking establishment. Yes the beer range is limited, its a little dusty and cluttered in places, and you mey get a funny look if you have not been in before. However, it has bucket loads of CHARACTER. Its a tribute to John and the hardy band of regulars that the Earl is still going when so may other pubs have fallen by the wayside. Sample the very resonably priced whisky, play cards with Joan or listen to a jukebox not updated for about 30 years - a unique experience.

This place should have a protection order slapped on it, nothing I can say can prepare you for what's in store at the Earl Grey. Travel back 40 years and things would be little different although some of the regulars may look a little younger. Suprising thing is that the real ales are well kept, the Landlord very knowledgeable and the locals friendly. Give it a try, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I use this pub and think its great. When I walk through leek during the week many pubs are empty but not the grey. He may have limited ales but they are well looked after. The whisky choices are second only to the Wine Shop.
If you dont like it stay away, you wont be missed.

unbelievable place. My great Aunt Ethel used to sit in her taking her snuff back in the 1930's and I have been informed that it has changed little since then. I would agree that the selection of ale is not amasing but then what the hell do you expect from a pub that is no bigger than the front room of a terraced house! "needs a lick of paint"? People who talk about this place in these terms clearly fail to see the point, perhaps they should stick to 'sum lager at weverspoons' with all the other muppets. This is the shanri La of back street locals. Well worth a visit.

For anybody who has ever wanted to experience time travel, but alas has yet to discover a time machine, then a visit to the Earl Grey is your best alternative. Step through the door and you will instantly be transported back 50 years! Unfortunately the carpets, curtains and furniture contained within give the appearance of never been changed (or cleaned) for this period. Cyril was correct about the extensive whiskey selection, but I must admit that the cobwebs hanging from the bottles detracted from me trying any of them! I would suggest either an extensive redecoration is required, or perhaps a visit by the national trust to update the pub to 'working museum' status!

This pub needs gutting. Could Cyril, who gave it a 10/10 rating turn out to be the landlord.....I ask myself...? Talk about run-down...? Definitely one to give a miss!

I'm sure that there are those that like their pubs to retain as much originality and charm as possible, though I would argue that failing to clean the place in 50 years may constitute rather more toward filth than charm. The beer was served too cold, probably due to the freezing temperatures 'enjoyed' in this 1 room 'pub'. The selection of whiskies, as mentioned by Cyril was indeed extensive, but gave the appearance that they had not been sampled or sold for quite some time. That said, the hospitality was friendly, though it may well have been surprise that left a bemused grin on our hosts faces. One for the purist I think.

The pub is not worth a visit. We found it served only one ale and the whisky looked like no one had drunk it for year.
The pub does needs a lick of paint and a set of new seats.

Great beer, great whisky, great company. There are more than 60 whiskies including the famous The Queen of the Moorlands Single Malt and "Rare Cask".
