Windmill, Gravesendback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
A Wednesday afternoon for me and a pal in Gravesend with a plan to tick the 5 pubs that appear in the 2016 GBG.
First stop at noon was this quaint local in a smart residential area which is a solid 10 minute walk from the station.
5 hand pumps, the ale choices on my visit came from Shepherd and Neame, Greene King and Muskett Brewery, with Muskett being a new brewery for me i opted for a pint of their Fife and Drum @ 3.8% which was a decent and well-kept ale.
Only 3 punters in including the 2 of us. We had a choice of seating so we sat in the comfy bench seats in the bay window and enjoyed our ales. The television was on showing the news but this was on silent while soft background music played.
The Windmill is a 3 roomed pub with the room to the right of the front door being laid for diners, the large bar area is to the left and at the back is a light and airy room with plenty of seating. Large garden to the rear that apparently in the summer hosts functions.
We only had a quick stop here, the beer was good and the landlord was friendly.

Since the change in management, this lovely pub set in a beautiful conservation area of Gravesend has gone from strength to strength. The friendly Landlord and Landlady do everything they can to make this pub a warm and welcoming meeting place. Additionally, the Summer and Winter beer festivals have been a lot of fun, as have the music and the Landlady's authentic tapas nights. We have enjoyed the cheese and charcuterie evenings midweek that transform the pub into a cosy wine bar. The Landlord is very knowledgeable about real ales and works hard to get a good mix of different beers and as real ale lovers, we particularly appreciate this!

Following a change of management, the new landlord is nowhere near as friendly and/or professional as the previous licensee. An air of aloofness verging on arrogance now exists behind the bar, and it's even rubbing off on the staff, who used to be far friendlier. Not good.

Nice enough place. Quiet location away from the main town centre. Good sized garden with ample seating (in summer, 2014). Bar cramped with drinkers. Beer OK, but only stayed for one (not cheap, either). Might be a bit local for the unfamiliar - I got the sense that it was very much a local's pub, which, considering its residential setting and familiar banter at the bar, could be the case. I suppose its appeal must be it is away from the main town centre, which has a generous share of pretty awful places, although there are a few improving if you can find them. I was visiting with a friend from Palestine, Texas, who declared it the best pub he'd been to in Gravesend. That's a long way to come for a pint, so it must be doing something right!

Total gash. If you're not local to Gravesend, forget it.
Up from Maidstone (Maidstone! A foreigner!)in July 2013 to meet friends for the weekend, the surly bint behind the bar tried to sting me for £5.60 for a pint of Master Brew. Must have taken me for a Londoner. Left it in the tap and went to the superior, cheaper and friendlier Rum & Puncheon.
Best avoided, the atmosphere is suspicious, closeted and resentful. Heard so many good reviews word-of-mouth and read online but was sorely disappointed by this overrated joint. Amazed it's in a conservation area.

Great summer pub as has a lovely garden to sit and have a quiet pint. One of the nicest pubs in town.

You wouldn't find this pub if you didn't know where to go. Excellent little find, bar staff are friendly, beers are good and the locals welcomed me, even though I'm a Londoner! Top marks all round!

Pub is kept in excellent condition as is the cellar. Good range of beers and other drinks. Good food. Friendly, convivial atmosphere. Set in a good position and has a great garden that backs onto a small park. Pub is set in the conservation area of Windmill Hill.

The ale was average, Youngs Ordinary, would like to see local ales on the menu (Goachers, Nelson etc..). Nice pub garden, although could do with a play area for the little drinkers. Bar staff could do with some Customer Service training...

Completely agree with Dogbolter and Sunshinedan. One of maybe 3 pubs in Gravesend worth visiting. Good beer, homemade food (lunchtime only I believe) and a great garden.

Good pub with quick service,good selection of ales in consistantly top condition ,not the cheapest pub but run by a guy with old fashioned values about service and courtesy,names Roger.
