The emphasis is on food (I didn't eat), yet the bar area retains an attractive identity. There are marquees for cover in a spacious garden. Harvey's Best was in tip-top condition, and served at precisely the right temperature. Friendly landlord - ask him about the champion boxer in the 1950s who fought in this pub.

Nice enough place - lost most of its pub fixtures to make way for the usual gastro set up. One beer had turned to vineger which was a bit shocking Others (house beer) was fine enough. Another pub sadly that thinks it is a restaurant and charges accordingly (you could spend £35 on three course quite easily). Veg food was pretty awful and if I could find an e-mail address I'd provide advice on what to serve and how to prepare it. Hope you are reading this pub.

A really pleasant village pub. Lovely interior, which strangely looks older than it does on the outside. Good range of beers and even had some mulled wine on offer at a reasonable price. We visited on a Monday afternoon so was probably quieter than how it usually gets, definitely worth another visit

Comment: Nice country boozer but prices a bit high but not highest in the area.

Lovely beer, good food, perfectly acceptable on every level.

A pleasant country pub in a lovely setting. A nice enough place to sit outside and enjoy a few pints of what was quite decent beer when I visited.
|
a great pub in a great place in the countryside!
|
So the landlord thinks that the X Factor is keeping people out of the pub. Can't be his prices then. Good beer though.

Four of us had a three-course lunch here, for 60 including drinks. Astonishing value. Food delicious, beer (including the two Tonbridge ones) absolutely excellent, service extremely friendly and pleasant.
What's not to like?

Very busy on a midweek lunchtime but there is a lot of space here for a large number of customers. The bar itself is small which caused some minor delays but overall the service was very good.
The food menu is reasonably wide ranging with a variety of different price levels according to what type of food you want. We certainly had no complaints about our meals.
There were four real ales available, including local brews from the Royal Tunbridge Wells, the Tonbridge and the Westerham breweries. The last two were on offer at 2.80 a pint which is good value in this neck of the woods. The ales were in good form as well.

I can't believe this place gets bad reviews! Pretty little country pub with a great atmosphere and lovely garden ideal for the kids. Set within some of the best country walks ready to build up your apetite for food. So ok the food isn't going to win any awards but its good hearty pub grub. Also totally agree about the Landlord, I just wish he'd let dogs in the bar!!

I totally agree with PaulGB i went to this pub at the weekend and had a lovely time and a brilliant meal. I also found the staff were very friedly and welcoming. We had a good laugh with the Landlord and yes he is a one of a kind.
They have a big garden which has goal posts which our sons enjoyed and kept them amused so we could relax and enjoy the afternoon.
If anyone is looking for a good pub with every thing this Pub has it, i will definetly be going back very soon.

Strange comments from one or two people here. This pub is a one off, with a great location, beautifully kept beers, quality food and a team of staff who behave like a family. OK, the landord is a bit quirky, but if you want bland then go to MacDonalds for your lunch. Some people need to get a life and realise what a unique thing we have in our country with our pub culture - no two are the same.

Overpriced: 8.95 for a small salad and dish of macaroni cheese. Returned the meal back. I just couldn't believe they charged that much. Chips and veg weren't included. It was like a child's meal. I am just not one of these people who eat and put up with it. I would rather not have anything. They only offered 1 refund. Eventually, I got a full refund. I wonder if I am the only customer who ever had! The manager said that he has had no complaints about the prices before.
Another person wanted a refund there too.
Some people were happy but then they have had had more on their plate.
There were no cycle racks. I felt immediately unwelcome.
Nice location but it has so much potential. I think it should be more friendly. One nice barman though.

Highly overpriced. 17.95 for a Sunday roast! Only 1 hot pudding available otherwise ice creams. Landload (I presume he was) reminded me of Victor Meldrew. Unpleasant manner about him. Out of our large party of 8 people we all concluded that we really didn't take to him. The meat was cold and had to be returned to the kitchen for warming (microwaving) Cracked washbasin in toilet and no soap. Certainly not what I expect for spending that amount of money. Definitely would never go there again. A great pity as was in a nice setting. Make the food cheaper and change the management for a great pub.

Could this be the perfect pub?
Delightful people run it; it's a free house; the food's great (not the cheapest, but worth it); the beer's terrific. Blimey - they even have theatre performances in the garden in summertime!
There has been a very grumpy barman (or perhaps it's his idea of humour?) when I've been in at lunchtime, but no sign of him on recent visits, so happy indeed.

My partner and I visited about a week ago,and were disgusted to see a British National Party (BNP) pamphlet proudly and clearly on display behind the bar.
Do not give your money to those openly in support of fascism and racism. Disgusted.

Great pub especially in the summer. The beer garden has an excellent view over open fields. One of my favourate pubs in the area. I recommend booking a table if your planning on eating in the restaurant but the bar food's not bad if you can't get a seat.

Quick update - went there again on Bank Holiday Monday, arrived early and the absence of heavy patronage at that time proved what a good pub this is. I was served virtually immediately (sadly the Finchcocks wasn't on due to heavy demand the previous evening) and enjoyed another excellent prawn plaited roll, my wife having the smoked salmon & cream cheese version. I forgot to mention previously that the rolls come with salad, a lemon quarter, nachos and a pot of salsa, which is delicious!

A stunning setting for a pub. Superb beer garden, and lovely snug and cosy interior. The locals are very friendly. I remember getting a large bag of organic vegetables for free when I last visited, which were just being handed around by one of the patrons. Such a friendly crowd. Real Kentish country hospitality. The pub is lovely, but I only recall the excellent Fuller's London Pride and Harvey's Best that they serve. Lovely stuff.
I've eaten in the restaurant before, and was very, very impressed with the quality of food and service.

The White Rock will need no introduction to walkers who frequent this part of the world. We first went there for a family birthday party and were immediately impressed with the friendly banter of the staff and the quality of the (Finchcocks) ale. The restaurant food was good too, so my wife and I included it in our next walk. This is where, in the main (read on) it excelled! We rang the previous evening to reserve a table - sadly all were gone, but we were told a marquee covered area to the rear would be available, which is was. This suited us fine, and again we were impressed with the friendliness and banter of the staff. Again the beer was excellent and the food was nothing short of sensational - a plaited roll with fresh prawns and trimmings was beautifully prepared and scrumptious. One patron unconnected with us insisted on eating his own food (despite signs, perfectly reasonably requesting us not too) but then he was wearing an inordinately strange hat. His loss the food, not the hat).
If there's one thing this pub fell down on slightly, it is that the bar serving area is small for the capacity and popularity of the pub and one or two locals were taking up a lot of the available counter area. This occasioned one or two other patrons to be disproportionately less than courteous or considerate when ordering their drinks or food (and in one case asking for a thermos to be filled with hot water....). However this is picky, is largely beyond the pub's control and was more than made up for by its plus points. Highly recommended but either check/book in advance or avoid more popular times such as Sunday lunch and Bank Holidays

Went a few weeks ago one sunday lunchtime and found it to be more of a restaurant than a pub with nowhere to sit unless you had booked a table so not really a pub atmosphere and rather disappointing and the only pubby bit was where the locals stood and chatted but were robbed of any comfort. Beers all good though and service also. Would not go back on a Sunday though.

Lovely little pub in the Hmalet of Underriver in Kent. THe roses round the entrance sort.
Food is okay as pub food goes as well
