Good pint of Special last night (Weds).

Near perfect and that includes the beer garden which must have one of the best beers in England. Veggie and chicken burgers were superb, service friendly and the interior smartly decorated while the exterior is pure, gaze in ecstasy traditional. The one quibble - the Youngs ales - I'm usually a fan but prefer to drink them in Southfields, not Shaftesbury - especially now that Charles Wells havae taken over.

We had a pleasant visit yesterday early evening and ended up staying long than we should have. Young's Special, Bitter, Bombardier and Winter Warmer available, my choice was the latter which was in good order. Very busy when we left, I would say most drinkers in their 30s but all ages there.

Looking for a redcoration but, none the less very busy on my visit and, my otter ale was in good nick, noticed several neals come out pub grub pie & chips fish & and chips but all looked well cooked and smelt appetising. Only downfall is the hike upstairs for the toilets. And the people that insist on hogging the bar when things are busy.

Pub has been redecorated & is much improved. I have had a good pint of Youngs "Ordinary" most Friday evenings for the last 3 months. Food seems to be getting busier!!
|
For the past month this pub has stank of vomit, why they do not do something about it I do not know.
Beer exspensive and food I find to be good.
|
Steady on BeerEnthusiast, it's not that bad and I was in there just a couple of days before you. The back room is definitely a bit grubby but the rest of the pub looks (and smells) fine, there were no dogs in there either. As it's still in the GBG I assume my experience of my last visit was a rarity but, if I go back to Shaftesbury I will use the Two Brewers at the bottom of Gold Hill.
|
This is a truly awful pub. Everything looks filthy, everywhere. The furniture is jumble sale rubbish etc. Dogs are encouraged; seem to have free reign, and the whole place stinks of dogs. This s a place that would benefit from closing and is a must to avoid until it is clean and properly managed.

Spent another weekend in Shaftesbury and popped in here again, not as good as my last visit. Ordered a pint of Gem and it was very cloudy and smelt off, took it back and it was changed without complaint unfortunately the second pint was just as bad and this time it took a bit more asking to get it changed! In the end settled for a pint of Youngs Special even this was not in top condition, a shame after my previous visit. On this trip I found the Two Brewers at the bottom of Gold Hill, well worth a visit, 4 or 5 ales on tap all well served. I can't find the pub on this website and the last time I added a pub a couple of years ago (Widow Cullens Well, Lincoln) it still hasn't been added.

Visited on a Saturday in 2010. Had an excellent pint of Young's Bitter and consumed in on the rear patio and enjoyed the vista. Would visit again.
|
Another good pint of Youngs. They also had Youngs Special, Youngs Winter Warmer and an offering from Bath Ales (which I can't remember. Must have been uninspiring!!). Not a bad little boozer. 5/10

HAD A COUPLE OF VERY PLEASANT PINTS OF YOUNGS WHILE SAT ON THE PATIO AREA LOOKING OUT OVER A WONDERFUL VIEW. GOOD ENOUGH PUB BUT CONSIDERING THE LOCATION AND REAR VIEW IN THINK THEY MAY MISSING A FEW TRICKS.

Very nice pub in Shaftesbury town centre. The terrace has great views which I guess attracts a lot of tourists. Had a nice pint of Young's Gold which went down well. Had herb chicken to eat which very nice although they weren't able to give me a couple of my first choices as they'd sold out but it wasn't too big a deal.
Staff were friendly and the toilets were reasonably. Overall, my visit was a positive one and I'd recommend anyone else going there too.
8/10.

Just spent the weekend in Shaftesbury and this was the best pub there (better than the bar at the Royal Chase Hotel anyway but, to be honest, that's not saying much). I tried the Youngs Bitter & Special plus a couple of guests, Bath Gem and St Austill Tribute, all in good nick, well served and not too expensive considering the touristy nature of Shaftesbury. I didn't eat here so can't comment on the food.

Still Crap.

Could potentially be an outstanding pub, but in the last year or two, it seems to have been let go a bit. The toilets could really do with a good clean and the carpet could do with a vacuuming. Dont bother trying to get food after 6 on a Sunday night, the amount of potential customers, and potential profit I have seen turned away after 6 is heart breaking, in these difficult times.

Food looked good from what i saw but obviously a bit pricey and capturing the tourismo market.Although the place was vitually empty at just gone 2pm with just a couple of locals popping in for a quickie, enjoyed my pint of cornish bitter. The hill climb to the loo,s didn't bode to well, and the scenic patio seemed to be the smokers haven..the pub was clean and service with a smile, but wouldn't break my neck to get there. It should have been buzzing with tourists considering it's locality to one of the most adoring sights in Britain.so that must mean something..

damned expensive for not good quality beers.
|
This VERY nearly became "executive apartments" when Eldridge Pope sold up a few years ago. Saved (thankfully), it is one of the better pubs on the Shaftebury hill-top. Having said this, it is also a tourist magnet (as it's next to Gold Hill, the hill from the Hovis ads). This means that the service is not always all that it could be. A very good selection of beers here, with food that is often good, sometimes indifferent. Personally speaking, it's best in mid-winter, when there is no tourist trade. In summer, it has stunning views, even if the service suffers.

Yesterday I visited the Mitre Pub in Shaftesbury where I ordered a bowl of soup. Unfortunaely it had meat in it when it arrived (Minestrone) and I politely said I did not eat meat and could they replace it with a cheese sandwich or a portion of chips. There policy was "no". No apology and it was tough luck on my part. I think this is an appalling way to treat customers. How much does a bowl of soup cost? They charged me 4.50. I will tell everyone in future not to visit the Pub.
|
probably best ale in shaftesbury, but that's not too hard to achieve, when most of the rest are Hall & Woodhouse establishments.
|
Nice beer ,good food, dog friendly, great view, friendly and efficient staff. What more do you want?
|
yes alot better now it is youngs - although they have managed to take all the atmosphere out of it. Food is good although pricey. It is regularly full of simpletons. Best to avoid the beer garden in the summer due to bubbling open sewers at the back - a bit smelly - been going on for at least 2yrs now.
|
Had one of the best pints of Youngs Golden Zest here the other day. According to Youngs directory this is the only Youngs pub in Dorset now!8/10
|
Enjoyed the smiles enjoyed the views!

Totally agree with John. Young's pubs also at Hindon and East Knoyle. Excellent Bitter and Special, great food and a superb terrace. When will Young's have a pub in Salisbury?

A Youngs pub in Shaftesbury!!!!! A very pleasant surprise to find this pub amongst all the Hall & Woodhouse dross. As well as Youngs bitter and Special they also had Waggledance which is a honey beer and Smiles IPA. Food served from 12-3.00 and 6-9.30 I think.
