I really can't remember when i was last in The Salutation ? 1975 ? Well the only thing that seems to have changed is the choice of beers. Its now better ! Had a great pint from The Castle Brewery but plenty of others to choose from. Well worth a visit if in Nottingham

Not far from Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, and apparently not much younger. A different pub though; not a tourist magnet but a music venue it seems, which usually means in daylight its near empty, as this pub was. Nevertheless, a fine pint of Everard Sun Chaser ((3.40), a friendly bar person and an atmospheric interior rates this pub highly in my opinion.
Good city centre pub and pints of Ruby Mild and Oakham JHB proved to be good choices. Something of a rock pub but not as wholeheartedly so as the Old Angel across town. We visited late afternoon so only confirmed drinkers were present. A back snug featured portraits of Oliver Cromwell in action.

Nottingham has more than its share of interesting pubs. Somehow, I managed to enter a time warp as I entered this place. The jukebox was belting out Whitesnake. Poodle permed men had bandanas hanging out of their jeans arse pockets.
The beer looked plentiful. My 6x was wishy washy. I came, I saw, I laughed, I will not be returning.

My second pub on my recent trip to Nottingham. Was a great find and quite handily near my hotel. A rockers pub who take care with their ales. 4 handpumps with ales on and 4 pumps with scrumpies on. Apparently it is a very old establishment - not too older than ye old trip. Drank a pint of Maid Marion which was in great condition. Had a good laugh with the regulars and bar girl. Old timber wood inside adds to the oldie world feel.
Recommended.
As a Heavy Rock themed pub - very good. Not so good otherwise. Limited beer choice - EPA, Hobgoblin & Pedigree. Very old interior, but the two "ye olde" snugs were cold & uninviting.
Went in here recently to reminisce of my time spent here in my early twenties. Still a good pub, with a good selection of beers - some of which were good, some of which were not so. Enjoyed it, I have to say.
Went in early on Saturday lunchtime so it was quiet, but still received a friendly welcome and the beer was top-notch. It's a bit shabby, but I would imagine that when it's busier this place has a good atmosphere.
An olde world pub that isn't your quaint tourist trap but more of a real pub. Good selection of ale I had the chocolate and chilli stout which was unusual but drinkable. One of the better pubs in downtown Nottingham.

Visited on 5 May when the mighty Us lost 4-1 to County. Didnt really like this pub, very interesting interior and one of the customers looked like a lost extra from the Lord of the Rings, definitely wouldnt visit it in the evening when busy and with rock music, but thats just my taste. The beer was perfectly good though and would recommend it. 7/10
Biker/Rocker style pub with a very good ale and cider range. Friendly barmaid on our visits and so were the other customers.
Wednesday night - busy and very very loud with a 5 piece blues band taking up most of the main bar space!! I don't mind bles but this was right in your face,so a quick pint - my friends couldn't even handle one pint - so off somewhere else. Beer was OK (some new breweries to try) but the barman was "unusually kitted out" to say the least!
We sailed into this pub last Saturday to be greeted by a load of chavs shouting. So we ordered up and then went into one of the snugs - which unfortunately smelt like 'old mens hats'. Just because this pub is ancient, doesn't mean the cleaning regime has to be! The beer wasn't too brilliant either.
Slow service, good beer selection, lots of snugs etc. As far as rock pubs go, I'd rather visit the Old Angel, but it's alright for a couple. A huge black Alsation comes at kicking out time.
7 handpumps to choose from,my pint of Belvoir "Dark Horse"(2.75) was spot on, a great old building too, 7/10
Called in yesterdayand today for a meal while in Nottingham for this weekend's beer festival. The lasagne is great. Had Oldershaw Mowbray Mash and Bateman GHA yesterday and Blue Monkey BG Sips today, and the beers were in excellent condition.
The best pub in Nottingham is the Salutation... If anyone knows of a better one please let me know........ Good food, Good ale and Good times....
not bad place, friendly and the leffe was the best i'd ever had!
Well known traditional old pub by the side of Maid Marian Way, a busy dual carriageway in the centre of the City. It's about 5 mins away from Ye Olde Trip.
The building apparently dates back to 1240, but the present pub is 17th Century. There's dark oak beams and a warren on interconnecting drinking areas, including 2 downstairs snugs called The Cromwell Room and the King Charles Room. Apparently the building was used as a recruiting base during the Civil War between 1642 and 1646.
The pub describes itself as a "Rock 'n Ale" Pub and, on my recent Monday afternoon visit, the loudish juke box was a constant reminder of the former. Although the pub was not busy, it did give it quite a studenty feel. There's live music evenings too.
Apparently there are caves underneath the pub and, as these are reputed to be haunted, there's the inevitable ghost tours. Inside the pub, we learn that the ghost is supposed to be that of Rosie, a street urchin in Victorian times.
The pub is in the CAMRA GBG and is evidently a keen supporter of local micros. On my visit these included beers from Oakham, Belvoir and Caythorpe. Caythorpe Dover Beck - 2.70p - was a tasty session-type beer.
If they could go easy on the music, I'd happily do this one again.

Called into this old pub on a crawl of Nottingham in March. We were doing Good Beer Guide pubs that we hadn't been to before. Enjoyed a new brewery beer Blue Monkey Original. It was quiet when we were there and seemed a bit bare. No problem with the beer though.
I did say I'd be back. Made time for two pints on this occasion.
I Think something called "Old Moor Porter" was one of them. Twas bloody good whatever it was called.
My other pint was a local brew called "Rock". Locals might mock it, but if I could bring a keg of the stuff on the Ryanair back to Galway, I would.
You can't get real ale here. (Rant for another day).
"The Salutation" is quite possibly the best pub in Nottingham' I haven't been in them all, (Yet). Some of the barmen look the illegitimate sons of Ozzy Osbourne but they are damn good at their job.
I'll be back. (Again)
Excellent pub, but can get very busy at times. Discount for CAMRA members
Always has a decent range of real ale on and I've never had a bad pint in here. Last time I called the landlord was polishing his helmet at the bar. I kid you not! Attracts bikers and rockers which is fine by me as it means decent music. CAMRA members get 20p per pint of with their CAMRA membership card as well.
we enjoyed our meal at this pub, the service was satisfactory and the food real pub food. it is not a pub for the pretentious, but for those who want a good meal.
Had a nice pint of something here last Wednesday but I can't remember what it was. Milestone rings a bell - 5%. Music was a bit loud but at least it was good music. Would have liked to stay longer but didn't have time. Good barman too. As The Guvnor of California might say - I'll be back.
Great pub for the rock scene with quality ales (good selection of guest beers which are regualy updated/changed). The landlord and bar staff are all friendly and efficent - I've never had to wait longer than a couple of mins to get served on a friday or saturday night. However, I will not be returning to the Sal as a drunk bouncer decided to take exception to me last night and threw me down a flight of stairs! I've been drinking in this pub for many years and any local will testify that I'm not a touble maker. It's a shame that a credible and unique pub such as the Salutation cannot employ more reputable 'security' staff - this has cost you a loyal customer. Thanks for the good times.

Wentworth Bumble Bee, Belvoir (pron.Beaver) Whippling Golden Bitter, Notts Legend, Oakham Inferno, Burton Bridge Stairway to Heaven, Hambletons Nightmare (5% stout). Descend 2 steps from door into single room wood-floored bar area, rock/thrash metal predominant music, then notice the blackboard of rather incongruous food specials ~6/7, eg beef chasseur with mustard mash! Beyond to low-beamed King Charles snug on left; this has an old fireplace and an oddly stale smell, the bar extends down here but is now used for storage, rather than service. To the right the smaller, victorian-esque Cromwell snug, plain with tatty surrounding settles wood tables & chairs, another fireplace, a sash window to sidestreet, & print of an old monastic court scene (???, dunno, but I wrote it down). Unsure re Tds mention of sticky carpet I only recall wood and tiled/stone floors(?). Slightly rough around the edges but friendly enough, and good beer choice & quality.
As rock / goth as ever with sticky carpets. But still a greeat pub in its own way and a fie pint of Belvoir Whipple Snapple (or something like that). Worth a visit.
Good late evening venue if you like heavy rock music and real ale. Ideal finishing post before retiring to my nearby hotel room.
A bangin' boozer - SO much better than the nearby Trip to Jerusalem. Loud rock music and a great choice of well-kept ales. Any place which has a bearded barman in a Ramones t-shirt and a beer as good as Kiplings IPA is good enough for me.
Great pub. Great music. Great Beer. What more does anyone need? Great bar staff too. A very good selection of beer on tap including a couple of milds. Didn't have time to try the food but the write up's on the blackboard look very tempting.
Great Beer, Great Music Great atmosphere and they've even done the bogs up what more could you ask for.
To the comment below I have always found the barstaff to be extremely friendly and very helpful. Carmel is one of the attractions to the pub not only for her beauty but also for her sharp wit and humour. Us regulars at The Sal love all our barstaff they are the best. xx
I really like the sal and the atmosphere there is great and i have to say overall great place. But there is a girl that works there called Carmel and she just isnt really the most pleasant of people to come across. other than that the sal is a great place.
Very enjoyable pints of proper beer(all becomes rather hazy as to which after a football away day) and fantastic food. The burgers are really something.
Had a very enjoyable beer (Hop a Doodle Doo) and some nice grub which was served quite quickly. The pub itself has quite a lot of character and dates back to 1240. There's a notice saying that part of the building is haunted and there's a diagram showing it's on top of Saxon caves. The toilets were clean and look as if they've recently been refurbished.
Overall I enjoyed the visit though as I visited at lunchtime I can't say what it's like in the evening...
8/10
Every time we visit here I want to explore but we are usually on a way to "somewhere else". Someday when we're not on our way to "anywhere else" maybe we can have a look around.
Love this pub! Especially being able to go down into the caves. Old Rosie cider nice but makes the roof of your mouth numb!!
Always loved the look of this ancient pub, though its always had the atmosphere of a stable without a Messiah....
Hate to be sour, but the beer recently has been terrible. Although the rock karaoke was the best entertainment I have seen in years. Used to like it, but now tend to avoid it after a few too many dodgy pints!
Ghost stories abound with this pub, with several small rooms and a door leading to the caves. Open mike on Sundays upstairs, also a pool table with winner stays on rules. The Charles Wells beers I had were OK
Went on Saturday afternoon - used to be packed all the time but it was empty and the barmaid had obviously forgotten how to smile and speak nicely to customers. Didn't have the footy on either. Has certainly gone down hill over the last year or so. Good ales although the Guinness we had tasted a bit funny.
Good selection of real ales, nice food and a cracking Rock night on a Saturday evening. Good area of notts for real ales away from the townies and chavs.
used to be really nice but has gone down hill slightly...food is a lot worse since they changed the menu....and why do they only ever have Old Rosie?? and they never fill your glass up to the top either...i know i could ask for a top up but the staff always seem as if they really can't be bothered with anything!
Have tried to like this pub but can't. It just always seems to be a let down. Wouldn't touch the food in there again.
lots of great nooks and crannies. well worth a visit along with Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem. am constantly surprised that both pubs aren't always packed with tourists.
Visited on a recent trip to the UK. It was probably my favorite pub. Great atmosphere, good food (and lots of it), and some superb ales (try the Castle Eden, if you haven't).
Went here for the first time the other night, and was really impressed. Excellent beer, and really nice inside. This could well become one of my fave pubs!

good beer, good food, and the tables get cleaned every now and then! This is a quality pub, and those are pretty rare on the ground nowadays. Staff are nice too. Try the real ales.

Went right down hill when it booted the rockers out from upstairs and opened up the downstairs. Good selection of beer though and it is actually the oldest pub in Nottingham no matter what the Trip and Bell say. Timbers in the roof dated to 1420.

Hello Rob and Tom! Hope all is well. Get Minford to do some work. Lazy Oirish Git.

I like the Sal, one of the few pubs in Nottingham I have found that sell proper cider instead of the bubbly, chemically produced crap that I normally drink ;-). Also sell lots of real ales, good atmosphere but can get cramped by the bar.

Last time I visited The Sal, Time Team had invaded & we couldn't watch the England game because Tony Robinson was too busy being a pikey.
