Fell in love with the place after 10 seconds from entering. A warm, friendly, and happy pub, bar skittles in full force. Lush cider (Chedder Gold at 6.5% was very nice...Thanks Del!!)
Can't wait for my next visit to Tickenham to see my mates Dave, Jenny, & Preston, along with Del & Julie Quinn who promised us it would be an experience!

The friendliest local people you would ever want to meet.
Long may "Le Flame Bleu" be the best Pub I have been to for a very long time.
Glad i only sank 4 pints of the cider though, or else it could have been carnage!

many thanks for your wonderfull hospitality to a family of Teessiders.
I can't wait to come back in 2012.

A completely timeless, unspoilt country pub. Its quite difficult to describe, but if you imagine the sort of house that a ninety year old might live in, having not touched anything for the last 50 years, you probably wouldnt be too far out.

It was presumably a residential house at one time (makes a pleasant change for a house to convert to a pub) and the layout is pretty much unchanged since. You go in through a small porch to a hallway. Theres a small snug off to the left which has a table skittles game and a couple of old benches and tables. To the right is a similarly sized room, but with the addition of a small bar counter. There are numerous old photos on the walls and an old fireplace, although Ive never seen this in use.

Beyond this is another room that tends not to get much use, although I once saw it being used as a barbers shop! This leads down a few steps to an extensive beer garden, with an old caravan in one corner, plenty of picnic tables and a BBQ area. They usually have a big fireworks party in November which is quite spectacular; not only fireworks, but a large bonfire burning an impressive and appropriate model, e.g.; the House of Commons.

This pub wont be to everyones taste. It takes being unspoilt to the extreme, and some might describe it as ramshackle. It hasnt had a coat of paint for decades and the loos are very basic and outside. But its a popular place in spite of being rather remote, and there is usually a crowd of friendly regulars sat out on the benches at the front. Besides crisps, the only food offering might be a couple of filled rolls on the bar and pickled eggs. The landlord Mick is a friendly chap and quite a character.
Theres an ever changing selection of beers served directly from barrels racked up behind the bar. They usually include something from RCH and on a recent visit there was their Pitchfork in addition to Skinners Ginger Tosser and Butcombe. Ciders are well represented with Thatchers Dry, Thatchers Traditional, Mendip Magic and Stowford Press.

All in all a great pub, and well worth seeking out.

Treading a fine line between unspoilt and neglected, this boozer is a tremendous survivor. Never mind the gripes about elderly glasses and outside toilets (the horror!), splendid hospitality and decent ales and ciders are what you come here for.

I would just like to echo what everyone else has said, this is a fantastic unspoilt pub, totally unpretentious, great atmosphere, good choice of beers and very friendly locals.
It's ideally placed for a sunny afternoon cycle from Nailsea or Backwell and has a very large grassed back garden plus a few bench seats out the front to watch the world go by.
Having said all that, I appreciate it may not be to everyone's taste. I've got a couple of mates who detest it, and it's not somewhere you'd take a girl to impress her on your first date! But if you appreciate a proper timeless boozer, don't mind it being a bit scruffy round the edges (that just adds to it's character) and aren't looking for food (apart from crisps or picked eggs) this has got to be the place to go.

Easily the most overrated pub of all time . the beer choice isn't that great , the pub itself itself is like something out of the third world . the toilets out of the 5th world . Nailsea's best pub , well as some someone who was born there is about on the same scale as being Swedens best opening bat at Cricket.

I cannot rate this old style pub highly enough,In the winter plenty of real fires to warm by and roast some chestnuts on. Ignoring the age of the glasses I love the mendip magic on tap and the music that mick plays is so in keeping with this genuine pub.In the summer a large grassed area at the back to sit out in!
It has a great feel about it and makes a change from all the other pubs trying to be a hostelry.

Hmm, having read the glowing reviews I was a little disappoionted in the beer selection, quality and price. There were three beers on, London Pride, Butcombe and RCH East Street Cream. All were kept on stillages behind the bar and they suffered from the afternoon heat. Same goes for the Thatchers Traditional cider. Not undrinkable, just could have been much nicer, especially when you're paying 2.80 for the East Street Cream and 2.20 for the cider. All in all, a nice spot to visit, maximum curiosity value, but I wouldn't go out of my way again. The lady behind the bar was very pleasant, even though she was doing all the work herself (landlord laid up with a swollen ankle).

"age yellowed" glasses ?!? Frankly never noticed this Pilkington, don't tell Mick or he will put the Cider up in price yet again! :-)
MisterX - 31 Mar 2008 21:09
idiosyncratic,age-yellowed glasses, a structure looking like it's in danger of imminent collapse, good beer, unmissable

Hosted by a proper Landlord (Mick) & frequented by real people.
A Great "Boozer" Some say a time warp, To call the Flame that is totally erroneous, It is now and has been, for as long as I can remember completely diverse, A place all should experience especially on a warm summer's Sunday afternoon when god knows who will turn up, Morris men, jugglers a vintage car/bike club or... well "god knows". One things for sure Big Si Whittem will be there..........

When Big Pete confidently predicted that "you'll never have been in a pub like this in your life" I was a bit dubious. But he's right. This is just like stepping back in time fifty years. The building (which is like an old house) probably hasn't had any attention since then, so it's on the run-down side, but this only serves to give it more charm. Excellent selection of garavity-fed real ale.

It's a bit like a marmite pub - like it or hate it. I love it!

A crumbling wreck, only held up by the mystical forces emanating from the ancient burial grounds upon which it sits.

It is rather splendid.

My second home of late (don't tell the wife mind!). Just like stepping back in time to an age where life was a lot simpler and stress had not even been invented yet. Can be difficult to find if you don't know the lanes but just ask anyone in the area where "West End" is rather than head into Nailsea itself.

Small room on left and small room & bar on right as you enter the pub. Charming barmaid who is a credit to the trade, friendly with everyone and not just the locals. Large garden at rear and seats outside front where you can while away the hours with a few pints and simply let all your pressures disolve into the ether.

Good range of gravity served ales usually inc London Pride, Butcombe, an RCH brew and regular guest ales (Taylor Landlord of late too!) also Sandford's finest Thatchers Traditional cider too. Wish I was there right now!

little diamond of a pub. friendly staff, fantastic beer, olde world charm

Big Pete is right. This place is unique and it was no more than an out of control cycle ride from my house in Nailsea. Its a real step back in time. They have a great cricket following here and a huge beer garden out back. Electicity? forget it, its candles and firelight at night. Superb range of tasty ales and always a traditional cider, thats real cider not that fizzy keg muck... dont try cycling after 8 pints of it though, I still have the scars!

An absolute gem. A step back to the north Somerset of the pre-war period. Well worth the trek out from Nailsea. Great pub with good selection of real ales and ciders. I can confidently predict you'll never have been in a pub like this in your life.
