I only manage to visit the castle about 3 times a year as i moved to irland. Its is a freindly pub. beer is good & at a resonable price, and the 2 lady owners are so polite. And the bar staff are very attentive. summers are good as they have a large beer garden. All the best peter.

My local 30 years ago when I lived opposite. No real ales but was made to feel very welcome by the landlady who was hosting what looked like a christening party from the church across the road. Nice to see it open again as this really seems like a community pub. No sign (fortunately) of the morons mentioned below. Good 70s and 80s music in the background.

Shame about the homophobic thugs in here, who are apparently regulars. Perhaps even more of a shame that no one else in the pub was prepared to challenge their attitude when I was asked to take my friend home unless he wished to see his teeth on the floor.

No real ale, how come this used to be an Evening Standard Pub of the Year? I have never known there to be many people in here at all.

Visited on a Friday evening. It was empty but for about 05 others. No bitter on - had to drink Guinness and left after the one. Maybe we visited between rushes?

No ziggy, surely some mistake. Or there's something right with half the pub with chairs upturned, and the other half with two blokes, not talking, and the barmaid the life & soul. I walked in through the door at the upturned half (bugger!) and "Oh Dear, Here's a New One". That's OK, but I honestly wanted her to stay where she was and allow me to pull my own pint, because I totally ruined the atmosphere. I like a quiet pub, but I can think of most pubs better than this one, quiet or not. I tried this place with my wife a year or so back, and it still is as 1970's as we'd originally thought.

defo one of the better pubs on the backstreets of surby

Great beer, great people, superb pool table. spent a good few hours in this pub while visiting a friend. Even considering moving to Surbiton to be closer to this boozer. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good session and a good laugh.
They will be doing food starting in a couple of weeks. Shellfish already available, bought fresh from Billingsgate.
A big shout to the staff who welcomed me with open arms on my first visit on Friday 30th June, 2006. Cheers guys, Dave

This pub has greatly improved of late (the pikies and druggies have been booted out for a start!)... It's got a wide ranch of beers and whiskeys now :-) and has a 42" plasma screen.

Started drinking in this place, aged 15, in 1970, coming here from the Venture Scout HQ in The Retreat. Had a good old lino-floored public bar back then, and the landlord got very upset if we tried to go in the saloon, tho it was tolerated if we were accompanies by Ranger Guides. Was shocked when it got the ES pub of the year award many years later - clearly it had changed dramatically.... Not been in there for years !!

This pub is returning to former glory! The inside has been redecorated, we now have a match pool table, plasma screen tv and internet-enabled jukebox. Roast dinners coming soon too!
