user reviews of the White Hart, Cheddar

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Our last stop in Cheddar was the White Hart. This is the pub that was closest to the tourist action of the Gorge. Although, its location tucked away from the main drag helps it avoid getting overcrowded with the masses. However, being a fairly small building, it was still busy. We managed to find a quieter corner with a spare table. This pub felt more like a local than the others in Cheddar. But, somehow I still preferred the Bath Arms. Butcombe Original, St Austell Tribute & Cheddar Ales Potholer were the 3 ales. Cheddar Valley was the cider.

Visited the White Hart this weekend with a large group. Really nice pub, friendly atmosphere and bar staff, prices a refreshing change from London, and there was a good choice of decent beers that seemed to be well kept and served. Located just away from the tourist hell that is the bottom end of Cheddar Gorge. This would be my first choice pub in Cheddar if I visit again.

The best pub in overtouristy Cheddar, warm comfortable, food fine, plenty of room, not spoilt inside, selection of 3 ales on handpump, Butcombe in excellent condition, have been here in the Summer before and it can be absolutely heaving probably because all the other pubs in the village are so poor.

Attractive pub just off the gorge, so presumably it can get quite busy with tourists at times. On our recent visit it seemed to be mostly locals. Theres a large central bar area with exposed stone walls, a dart board and various food options chalked up above the bar. Theres a smaller snug off to the right, although this was closed on our visit. There is a cider festival planned for this weekend, so I may have to pop back! No problems with the staff unlike some of the other posters.

Beers on this occasion were Bombadier, Butcombe and Tribute. Ciders were Blackthorn, Thatchers Gold and, rather appropriately, Cheddar Valley.

Crowd of boisterous young men smoking outside front door a bit offputting. Decor inside is what you'd expect from a cottage pub but beer selection not very exciting. Bar food available and a garden to one side. Generally disappointing.

I'm with nicnocs1 here: I called in with my son in very late September at about 5pm. I had a pint of Butscombe that went down well. The landlady served and was friendly and helpful.

The interior is pleasant, wooden beams, etc., and a traditional pub atmosphere.

At that time there were few others about - 4 or 5 at the bar and the same outside.

We had a decent enough meal which arrived quickly and was value for money.

What's not to like?

I dont know why this has such a low rating, I would say as a tourist though! this is probably the best pub in cheddar, atmosphere is good, decor is nice and traditional, pints were good, food was good and rather nice and busy.

Tried this place last year and wasn't very impressed then. But did pop back to see how things are going. No change at the oval as they say?. Always looks inviting on the outside but, once inside a different story.Menu looks half decent, but just run of the mill in the end, there weren't many takers for food on my visit,so i declined myself.

I agree with onlyrealbeer comments. The building itself is lovely, car park small, staff to busy texting instead of serving. Food long wait and not very impressive. Beer not good. The locals clearly dont like tourist being in there pub. Definately not going in there again.

I'm going to completely disagree with onlyrealbeer as my experiences of this pub are the exact opposite!

This is a pub that's full of atmosphere with welcoming local, good, friendly staff and decent beers that are well kept. The food is pub grub, so don't come here expecting an imaginative meal (the Riverside is the place for that), but for pub food it is well done and not bad value at that.

The car park is small, but this is a function of it's location at the bottom of the gorge among a cluster of old buildings all of which have been there since before the invention of the motor car.

Bad beer, worse company, terrible staff.

What can I say, this has to be the worst pub I've been into in may many years!

Avoid at all costs

Just visited the White Heart in Cheddar,

The Hobgoblin was off..... barmaid said she would see the landlord, so I got a pint of Old Speckled hen which was good. No sign of the landlord, until he came past collecting glasses, I mentioned the beer was off and he replied, "Yes I know I have just changed it" at which point he took the full pint, and didn't return!

Won't be going there again

Went in August this year during a day-trip to cheddar. Had a nice pint, a good meal, a bowl of water for the dog, and some toys for the kids to play with whilst waiting for lunch. Service was good, and the ploughmans was above average. Think the ale was waddy's six x, very drinkable. We had parked miles up the hill so didn't have to worry about the parking. All in all, not bad by any means.
