The staff here were appalling and the place just too local for me.
Don't get me wrong I like an old skool boozer but this place is stuck in the 50's!
4/10

Gorgeous boozer. Open fire, stunning ales and fabulous crusty roles. Home from home!

Visited on Sat 24th March, was a pleasant way to spend a wet afternoon in Weston.

Fantastic backstreet trad boozer, a real find in Weston, friendly, good selection of ale and newspapers to read. Full marks.
|
Friendly staff and locals, Ales (Cheddar Potholer) and cider (Thatcher's Gold) very nice, Caught up on a bit of history as they had found some old newspapers dating back to 1922!! All round a great little boozer.

A real phoenix from the ashes this one, a cracking little boozer that is deserved of any real ale pub crawl.

Definitely agree with the previous comment, one of the best real ale pubs in Weston, if not the best, and earns its place in the Good Beer Guide on merit.
Don't agree with Mighty1 regarding the lighting, most people find it on the dim side if anything! I think some of the furniture has been replaced recently, and while its on the old side it does the job. God forbid it gets replaced with the horrible high tables and stools the more trendy places seem to go for these days!

Now deservedly included in the 2011 edition of the Good Beer Guide.

The pubs OK but it's lit up brighter than the fairy on a Christmas tree and the furniture is just awful. The bar staff are pleasant enough but the owner hasn't a clue about ambience.

Popped into here on a quiet Wednesday afternoon and pleased to find 2 quantock ales and Butcombe bitter on, went back in the evening and had a very nice meal. Nice local pub, I will go in again when I am in Weston

Having driven by the Criterion a few times and never having gone in, I finally popped in last Friday with a mate who was up from London and we weren't disappointed. First impressions were that the pub was fairly busy with what seemed to be a few regulars. We propped ourselves at the bar and I started with a pint of Codrington Codger whilst my friend had a pint of RCH IPA. Both pints were excellent and in 1st class condition. Nice, relaxed atmosphere and the chap serving behind the bar was very friendly and knowledgeable about the ales on offer. We ended up chatting with him for an hour or so in between him serving customers. All in all, a nice little pub and such a relief to finally find one locally that's actually worth drinking in - The Good Beer Guide surely beckons!

Excellent little pub, worth walking up the hill for! Surprised its not in the Good Beer Guide, certainly deserves to be. Friendly crowd and first rate governor.

Not immediately obvious this pub, it seemed rather dark from the outside and on first impressions I thought it may have been shut. Its not until you get right outside you realise its open, and by then youre probably more drawn to the Raglan Arms opposite. Its worth popping in though, with a friendly landlord and a good choice of beers and ciders. Beers were Sharps 6-hop (makes a change from the omnipresent Doom Bar), Pot Holer and Theakstons Old Peculiar. Ciders were Blackthorn, Thatchers Dry, Thatchers Traditional and Thatchers Gold.

Improved greatly from previous visit couple of years back, great great ale just like the raglan opposite but not as cheap, 7/10

A REAL LITTLE PUB IN THE HEART OF THE OLD VILLAGE OF WESTON. GREAT REAL ALE SELECTION FROM LOCAL BREWERIES. DIRECTORS ALE A PERMANENT BEER ON TAP. REAL PUB . REAL ALES. REAL PEOPLE.AND A REAL SAMS BAR BILLIARDS TABLE. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT. TRY IT YOU JUST MIGHT LIKE IT.

Friendly staff, and excellent real ale! It's a great little pub, and their quizz night on Tuesdays is excellent!!

This pub was run down before the new management took over, Paul (the licencee) has done a fantastic job on recreating the traditional real ale pub with ale straight from the cask behind the bar and i would say the best tasting beer in weston. the criterion has that warm welcome that anyone from any age will enjoy with some off the best background music playing at the perfect level where you can enjoy a good conversation. i would highly recommend the criterion to anyone after that perfect pint at the right price.

This pub had a great oppertunity to be a real gem, but all the same old dross that ruined it previously returned when it re opened. The outside pavement is rendered impassable to pedestrians due to drinking and smoking customers who seem only able to comunicate with swear words. Make the few steps across the road to the Raglan, you want be dissapointed.

Under new management as of March 2009, completely refurbished with real ale served from the back bar. Was made very welcome and had a great pint or two!
