Great little pub, does not do food, but occasionally has excellent home made sausage rolls on offer, made by the fair hand of the lovely bar maid. Also recently arrived in the 21th century and has now gone contactless. Large screen projector so best pub in wendover to watch the football. Come on Liverpool.

Visited last week, a bit dated but in a nice way, beers good (shame most are Fullers) no food served apart from a few dusty looking sausage rolls sitting uncovered on the back of the bar all night. Music from the TV was far too loud to be enjoyable.

A friendly traditional local's pub with a good choice of beers and ales. The name over the door has not changed for 50 years. Sky TV, darts, doms, free WiFi and dog friendly. Fullers and other beers available, and the beer is kept very well. Been in the Good Beer Guide for many years. Serves an excellent pint of London Pride. This is a good example of the increasingly rare 'local'.

i agree with indiekid, it is like drinking in your grans living room! too much noise from tv's also

Feels like a 1970s working man's boozer on a council estate. Not the sort of public house you'd expect to find on a hill with all the 17th century cottages. Has a wide choice of ales on tap but to be honest from the choice of pubs locally in Wendover I'd say there are friendlier, more comfortable, and nicer pubs to visit.

a nice small local. Very pretty from the outside, being the end terrace building on the spectacular tudor 'boleyn cottages'. not so stunning inside, but the fireplace end is nice, and its a decent traditional pub. definalty a locals place, but still very friendly. They have sky, so the football is shown, and its dog friendly.
its a fullers pub, so usual fullers stuff also including summer ale and wild river, both very nice. also the honey dew is always good on a hot day.
decent pub.

Nice pub. Was being driven thru Wendover with a mate last week. They do look after the beer and the place is kind of countryfied inside, one or two people seemed like regulars and were friendly, staffwise it was nothing special, woman behind bar a bit fed=up looking. Probably go again if passing through but not specially, shame I never got chance to do one or two of the other bars in the town

Does that mean you didn't get a near hero's welcome Lee?

Visited again on Thurs 17 June. Interior unchanged but something seemed slightly colder about the place than on previous calls at the Pack Horse.
Fuller's London Pride continuing to be well-kept and the building itself is a pleasant one.

Good beer well kept

Was in wendover for the evening and tried a few local pubs. The first few were sub-par so I found this gem on this site and tried it. A friendly locals' pub with decent beer at a good price. I wish I had a local like this! Dart board in house and friendly bar staff. Just great.
|
Lovely looking on approach on corner at end of row of old leaning thatched cottages. The inside belied this initial expectation, a low-ceilinged plain bar with upholstered settles, a large corner given over to dartboard (trophies suggest a good team here), the area to the front had the feel of an open snug with a fireplace covered in trinkety items. A plasma beyond bar was showing the Scotland game at unnecessarily high volume, given that there was only one other punter, plus us three - none of us watching the match. Gales Butser (pretty good) & Seafarer, Discovery had gone, Pride (poor condition). Didnt expect to find myself in total disagreement with Lee, but I am. Not one that would feature on my list again, & ludicrously high current rating, sorry.

An awesome local pub, great beer, superb bar staff, and they are dog friendly. Highly Recommended.
Well Done the Pack!!!

A very sound Fullers house, a very loyal regular crew - indeed, by the rating, incredibly loyal. Decent pub though the score is a little misleading.
|
Wonderful place, still unspoilt and uninterfered with. Visited with a friend this evening and we were thrilled to see every fixture and fitting intact and in place. We enjoyed a well-kept pint of Fuller's "Discovery" and watched locals play what looked like a game of tennis on the WII set.
This remains a gem of a pub and should be retained just as it is. Make sure you visit while in Wendover.

Very happy for this to be my new local. Friendly landlord and staff, and always a decent selection of ales. It's a Fuller's pub, but there's usually a guest from outside the Fuller's portfolio (recently it was Steerage from Titanic, which was terrific).
|
We went here yesterday and were delighted to find that, as the previous reviewer said, it is a "proper" pub. It even had pickled eggs for sale. They were delicious and only 40p each. The London Pride was superb.
|
This is an excellent example of a threatened species: 'the basic local'. It survives in private hands unthreatened by brewery 'improvements', loud music and overpriced food.
You can get good quality (& value) beer, service and conversation. These are the essentials that define a pub for me, but are increasingly hard to find.
|
Another excellent visit last Weds (14/06/06). Unchanged since 2005 and the beer (Discovery) remains in fine condition.
It was touching to be remembered after a whole year by the (very) friendly landlord!
And the pen still works!!

This is a charming warm, welcoming cosy local, with very friendly staff. I visited with two friends last night whilst on a crawl in Wendover, and thoroughly enjoyed the pub.
Fullers London Pride and seasonal beers (DISCOVERY this month) are kept in excellent condition. The pub is a true gem, set against the background of picturesque thatched cottages, and is well worth visiting.
10/10, and thanks for the pen by the way!.
