Depressing place to go for a pint before - or after - a film in the Vue upstairs in the complex. Not much of an ale selection and what there is is pretty poorly looked after. Generally filled with dicks.

While the White House is still not bad, it used to be better when it was branded Wetherspoons rather than Lloyds. Today it is rather loud, if dimly lit. But there is a fair selection of beer and it is a large pub. You're likely to find a seat and be able to enjoy a meal quickly.
The real pond life of Luton congregate in yates' at the other end of the town centre so the White House is relatively civilised. Staff turnover seems quite high.
|
Cheap as always with JDW, but staffing hopeless - empty at 4 o'clock and 3 staff standing around chatting, full by 5 o'clock and 2 of the 3 staff gone home. Alot of people must walk out and go elsewhere because they get fed up of waiting. Surely the rosters could be reviewed to actually provide something approaching the correct staffing levels in relation to the demand.
Agree with other reviewers that the place is very dark and dingy - although if you go in the upstairs bit it's better.
To be honest, Harpenden and Flitwick are better places than Luton to go for pubs!

I didn't have a problem with this pub. In fact, I thought it was quite pleasant. Very good pint of beer on a Friday evening, crowded but not overcrowded. Clean and comfortable.

THIS MUST BE ONE OF WETHERSPOONS WORST PUBS IN THEIR CHAIN ACROSS THE UK.
IT OPENS AT 7 IN THE MORNING AND ATTRACTS ALL THE POND LIFE AND WINOS IN THE AREA FOR A CHEAP BREAKFAST AND DRINK AND THEY REMAIN THERE MOST OF THE DAY ONLY TO BE REPLACED AT NIGHT BY CHAVS LOOKING FOR A FIGHT.
I HAVE BEEN IN OTHER WETHERSPOON ESTALISHMENTS ACROSS THE UK AND THEY ARE BETTER RUN AND BETTER MANAGED THAN THIS PLACE.
WORD TO THE WISE....REVAMP THE PLACE AND BE MORE SELECTIVE WHO YOU ALLOW TO CROSS THE THRESHOLD OF YOUR ESTABLISHMENTS.....I MIGHT COME BACK IN IF YOU DO....

Vast place, poorly lit, even in the height of Summer. "Terrace" if you can call it that is full of benefit dwelling Asbo types. Ladies toilets grim and smelly have eaten there before but wouldn't again as it's going downhill rapidly.
Needs a facelift and a "no wasters" policy, preferably !

A huge great, poorly lit, hulk of a place. The clientele are a deplorable mix of hardened drinkers and baseball cap wearing scumbags - the trick is to get there early enough to secure a bit of personal space. Used to enjoy the Wetherspoons quiet pub policy of yore, now it has a DJ booth and perpetually sticky dancefloor. To think that a new generation of Lutonian youth is bred out of unions made in this squalid environment makes my heart bleed. Service laughably poor. Still, the ale is cheap.

Perhaps I went there at a good time (early Tuesday evening), but it seemed OK to me. Two levels, with a number of arm chairs as well as high and low tables. Enough staff behind the bar, and no bouncers. Four of the Real Ale festival beers were on.
|
Usually served too cold, but the ale is almost always drinkable which is no mean feat in a chain whose employees seem dedicated to keeping the customer dissatisfied. I dont suppose you can blame them. I suppose there cant too much job satisfaction in serving to hardened drinkers all day in such dinghy surroundings. However, I have found the pub quite good for a quick pint before an early evening film at the multiplex upstairs. That said, from around 7pm the bar fills with the cream of Lutonian youth and the mood changes from sad to offensive.

Visited this pub in the middle of a real ale festival only to find that they had sold out of ale with 7 days to go. What a shambles this place is.Even letters to their Head Office does not seem to bring any improvements to the running of this pub. NOT to be visited on a friday or saturday night to crowded to get served!!!!

Doing her interview alongside the seasoned sots in the pub, I overheard (who I presumed to be) the Manageress telling Wetherspoons latest prospective minimum wage-slave that he needs to make the customer feel they are the most important person in the world. Made me smirk. The service here is appalling, although you really cant solely blame the obviously overwhelmed and despondent student workforce. Not that theyve got a clue about whos next to be served at the bar. Personally, if at all possible, if I miraculously manage to catch the attention of the bar staff, Ill give way to somebody who has been at the bar longer than I. Bar etiquette still exists, even in Luton, but not at the White House. Staff ineptitude doesnt help whatsoever but the clientele are the dregs of polite society. That said, the beer is very cheap and (usually) reasonably well kept. Somewhere to avoid like the plague when, by the early evening, 80% of those inside are wearing baseball caps and/or three lions on their tit.

They would'nt let me in the other Friday night as I was wearing a 'hoodie'... I'm 40 years old!!!!!
Their loss...

is this the darkest pub in luton?! as per the previous comment much preferred it when it was a wetherspoons, went in on a friday night, door staff were friendly considering it was two football fans coming back from wembley and obviously drunk. strange charging a quid to get in though, why bother for the sake of 1? anyway, as with all 'spoons the beer is cheap enough and tastes ok, last two times i've been in there, there have been people being 'asked to leave' fairly forcibly by the bouncers, but i couldnt comment on whether they deserved it or not.

I used to like it more before it became a Lloyds when it was just a normal Whetherspoons. Recently my friend got falsely accused of not paying for her drinks and got some free vouchers after complaining to head office but they should never have made her pay twice. So much for the customer is always right. The food is pretty rubbish now whereas before me and my boyfriend used to go there to eat regularly. It's still OK for a midweek drink (face it we haven't got much choice in Luton) but I'd avoid it at the weekends. My friend said she got charged a quid to get in a couple of weeks ago on a Friday night.

"whitehouse"? should it not start with "sh". Tried this pub friday morning, good value breakfast ( two of: egg, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, beans, tomato, mushroom and toast for 3.50 ) apart from that ok in day if you like to drink with Tenants Super and White lightning brigade, getting out of the cold. Went back in the evening!! All I can say is see comments of "bill actress" I think she has been a bit too kind personally. Is this place the reason Luton was voted worst town by the BBC Survey?

Sadly, a disappointment. Very dark and depressing interior, poorly trained staff, and awful table cleaning skills, (if that's a skill??) prices are cheap though, but I would expect them to be, due to the terrible service. I also had to pay to enter the pub!

A very spacious Wetherspoons situated in The Galaxy leisure complex in town centre. Incredibly dark inside , which makes you wonder why they haven't added more lights. Beer is pretty cheap as it usually is in Wetherspoons. A wide choice of lagers, and quite a wide selection of Ales too.

Reopened last Friday after another little refurb, this time to extend the "dancefloor" area. When you think of great principles - no music, no television, no smoking - that Wetherspoons once espoused, and have now casually dropped, its a little sad. On the plus side, its only 1.69 for a pint of ale, the quality of which has got better over the past couple of years and the big screen telly is of far better quality than it was two weeks ago. So, its just about ok to watch the cricket here... the place would get far too packed and odious to consider taking in a football match. Even without the menace of a big match atmosphere, Luton town centre isn't too nice a place to be after around 8pm.
Still, that said, there's always Luton Town FC.

Weekends are fancy dress. Think I saw half a dozen Puff Daddies, Shaggies one MR T a few other similar style half wits......complete joke. Some idiot in the toilets trying to sell cheap smelly stuff..really got on my nerves. Most of the blokes not even drinking just 'chillin' and 'driftin by' (pricks) Can't even talk properly, they make up their own stupid words. Do they know how proposterous they look? Anyway, the pub itself big and clean, and drinks ok. Probably better during the week.
|
Typical Wetherspoons. Quite nice for weeknights and the food is OK - available till quite late too. Wouldn't go there on Friday or Saturday nights though as it's too busy. Has non smoking sections and the upstairs seating area is good for people watching. Was better before they started playing music which is usually crap.
|
The sort of place you would go to before a nightclub to get you in the mood. Packed at the weekends, with a mix of young, middle age and older clientel through out the day and evening. The Ales are hit and miss, some taste well pass there sell by date, the rest, nice and well priced. I have had many great nights in this bar, it is large so you can change the scenery, with a short walk and meet a different style of person, Luton match days can be very hectic, so avoid, if your not a Luton fan.

If this pub were a car it would be a Ford Focus. Worth it for the steaks and curries, but watch out for the pond life that slurp there all day.

Recently extensively "refurbed" to become a Lloyds bar... which means music of an evening, a little more carpet, they've upholstered some seats, put plasma screens around the place to show football/cricket (and wall to wall advertising for the pub) and an extra 20p on a pint. Oh, and the food service has got a little more attentive... Apart from that, little has change. Still somewhere half decent for a pint in the daytime - and another place in Luton town centre to avoid in the evening. DHooks

There's a perpetual twilight inside this huge pub, and a continuous low hum which can make you feel like you're within the bowels of a spaceship rather than a multiplex system. Wedged at the weekend, more relaxed in the week (but traditionally understaffed at all times) and busy with hardened old drinkers and students in the day. Food is functionary Wetherspoons stodge, though I recommend the restaurants on Wellington Street rather than the risible fayre on offer on JD's Curry Nights. That said, the ale has improved significantly of late.
|
Well designed, large pub. Typical Wetherspoons in that there is no music but an ideal place to meet up and get a couple of cheap drinks before heading further into town. Food is basic but good.

Although I'm not generally keen on Wetherspoons pubs, this isn't too bad. Beer and food usually OK and the service surprisingly good for a chain notable for its lacklustre staff.

useful place for a pre/after visit trip to the cinema upstairs, but just average really, and why is the no-smoking area up stairs, doh ????

Very friendly staff, prices excellent and food verging on very good for a wetherspoons. Lots of tables and two large bars. All the facilities are very clean and children are allowed in at certain times of the day
