user reviews of the Ship, Eastbourne

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A couple of guest beers were on, both from the Beachy Head brewery but the first smelt and tasted off (and was changed) and the second wasn't to my taste. There was also Harveys and I think Doom Bar (yawn) on. We were 'driven out' by the pub bore who was rat-arsed and loud whilst talking to his friends. Despite this the pub looks nice but the two things that would bring me back, beer quality and ambience were missing.

Decentish pub but not fully convinced. Seems to be more food based than drinks led but pleasant enough and beer fine.

Pleasant-looking locals pub in Eastbourne suburb, 20 mins walk from the station. Busy with the pub quiz, which made below -par Beachy Head beer more disappointing.

Staff useless, beer awful, this pub as nothing going for it.

Never ever have i been so annoyed at the way a pub is run ( Apart from the Lamb in old town) . Beer disgusting , food cold and it wasnt a salad etc and the staff couldnt give a Hoot. Will not be returning with my family.

I visited this pub again today and there was pop music playing even though there were very few people in the bar. There was the choice of the garden which had quite a number of visitors but I wanted to eat and drink in the cool of the bar. What is it about people that they must have trashy music playing while they work rather than be at peace with themselves?. I shall not be returning, which is a pity because, as I have said in my previous review, apart from the unnecessary pseudo American whining coming from the speakers, it is an ideal pub.

I don't know all the pubs in Eastbourne but I doubt that there is a finer one than this. Tucked away in The Meads at the very end of the esplanade, it is an ideal place for those who despair of the yobbery that has been the hallmark of English pubs for the last 30 years or so . The rooms are spacious with fine leather chairs and a good selection of beers. The food is very good and the service also. I have only been there a couple of times on visits to Eastbourne and I definitely intend going there again this year. I don't know what the pub is like in the evenings but during the afternoon it has something of the civilsed atmosphere of a gentleman's club, which is exactly how I like it. For those who find it sterile, I suggest they keep to those many pubs in Eastbourne where noise is the major selling point.

I always pop in here when I am back in the UK and visiting the coast . This is a great family run pub, always a friendly and welcomimg atmosphere, the bar staff are excellent and the beer is well kept. In addition to a good pint of Harveys, they also serve Beachy Head, Guiness and there is usually a guest beer available too. I would recommend eating here, there is a wide choice of good pub food, that is reasonably priced. Try their homemade burgers, very tasty !! (watch out for th chillie burger). There is a restaurant and two lounge areas, as well as a conservatory and fanstastic beer garden in the Summer which has a great atmosphere when busy on Sunny weekends. I can also recomend the Sunday night quiz, quite tricky, but good fun and always well attended.

Used to visit regularly for lunch in the beautiful garden, friendly staff, I think they've changed the chef recently. The food was great but last visit with family was a dissapointment.

I go here whenever I have the fortune to be by the coast. It is a little haven. I think the atmosphere is friendly and you can tell that it is run by a family rather than some big corporate chain that won't even play music. The food is brilliant, I love the lasagne, and I think it is really homemade. My parents live nearby and even they, who are not that sociable, like to pop in for a drink or two. On a Sunday I have been recommended to book as the tables get busy for Sunday lunch. I noticed someone had mentioned the beer garden- in the summer, there is no other sun trap like it- its a complete time warp! being in there!

I wouldn't suggest anyone went here for food. I would agree that the atmosphere was very sterile. For such a nice location for a pub You'd expect good food and service. None was on offer.

Clean, nice interior. Sterile atmosphere though. Always takes a while to get served. Had Sunday lunch there recently. Roast beef was tough as hell, strangely enough the Yorkshire puddings were even tougher.

A bit undecided about this one. Looks like a proper pub on the outside, but inside it's spacious, loungey, and with no pub atmosphere at all. Apparently the same people also run a nightclub in town, an you'd guess they've used the same interior consultant for both. That said, it's a nice place to relax, almost too comfortable for my liking, the beer tastes like it should and the food is decent. And you don't find many beer gardens like this one.

A great pub with extensive outside seating in a pleasant garden setting.Wide selection of drinks with three real ales.Food good value with blackboard specials although service can be a little slow when busy.Overall the Ship has a pleasant atmosphere and is perfect for both a quick drink or a more substantial meal.

Whilst the indoor eating area was quite nice, and the staff attentive; the food was average. The experience was totally spoilt by smoke from cigarettes from smokers both within the bar and the restaurant. Roll on the total ban next year.

This pub has a wonderful outside seating area, and a brand new conservatory, plus loads of comfortable seating inside. It serves a good selection of beers and wines, and the food is consistently lovely, if not the cheapest you'll find. Overall, one of my favourites in the town, be sure not to miss the Sunday evening quiz
