Return visit to try the food and it was excellent. The curry was perhaps the best I've had in a pub and my partner's soup was superb and great value. Only downside is the pricey beer - a probable consequence of it being an Enterprise house.

Under new management and massively improved after several years in the doldrums. Good range of ales from the likes of Andwell & Langham including a dark beer (Andwell Porter). Deservedly popular. Well done to the new team and keep up the good work.

It was very quiet in here during our Monday afternoon visit. Note the pub does not open until 4pm on weekdays. The fire was welcoming and there is plenty of bric-a-brac to admire. Not too sure about the music though. It was very loud and a bit too trendy for such an establishment. Beers were much more mainstream when compared to the nearby South Western - Landlord, Summer Lightning, Wainwright, Doom Bar, Swift One & HSB. Worth a try.
Continuing to improve. Friendly with an increasing range of beers.
Now open again with about 5 local ales, now has regular live music.
Sadly now closed.
No real this evening, a range of bottled beer was offered, looked like it had been bought from the local T***o. Pub is for rent according to the sign outside. I hate to see a pub close but in this case perhaps it needs to be 'put to sleep'

After being redecorated, it has a fresh feel to it. Situated on the other side of the tracks at St Deny's from the South Western Arms (probably the best pub in town) it makes for a great mini pub crawl. 4 real ales on, tried the Bowman & Triple fff which were both fine. Trying to regain business after years of neglect and letting people know 'we're open!'. Live music nights and a large beer garden add to great little bozzer and I wish it well for a continued future.'
Seems to be back on track now. Very busy on Saturday evening with Bowman beer(amongst others) straight from the cask and live music.
Now reopened and fully redecorated, the pub now looks and smells clean. 4 real ales on, the 2 I tried (Bowman & Triple fff) were in good nick but pub was very quiet for a Sat eve.
Open again - will visit at the weekend.
Alas, the Dolphin has closed again.
Another surprising omission from the GBG.Both this & the S. Western have a better range and quality of ale than the Junction and both, unlike the Junction support local breweries.CAMRA please explain. The Juction is a nice pub, but the GBG is supposed to be about beer.
Really pleased to see it open again and seems to be getting back on its financial feet. Visited last night after Cricket as we always used to when we were at home. The Ale selection was OK but not as good as it once was. Fingers crossed that it will soon be back to its best and the beer will be as well kept and diverse as it was 2/3 years ago.
Still go here when going between the South Western and the Guide Dog but not what it used to be. Beer selection not bad - but the choice used to be much better.
Definitely open on Saturday night. Live music and three ales available. fff Moondance was in excellent condition. Quite atmospheric even though there were only a few customers at the bar early in the evening.
Closed again. Dunno whether there are any imminent plans to reopen but tentative enquiries at SouthWestern suggested not. A real shame as I enjoyed only previous visit; no rating now.
Was a bit lacking in electricity and warmth in late March, hope it's not more finacial problems.
Great pub and great beer. Very convenient for the station. Come here the go to the SW Arms on the other side of the station. You won't be dissappointed.
For the drinker who loves good beer and a terrific ambience and welcoming landlord and landlady, this is one of the best pubs I have ever been to.
Good selection of ale - no quite as good as the SW Arms over the bridge. But why no food anymore?

Was there on Saturday afternoon after having had a couple of ales over in the South Western. Still on the list of pubs to go to for a decent pint - but the range of ales was no where near as unusual as it used to be. Has the landlord been 'got at' by the Pubco?
It's good to see the pub up and running again. Check out a Sunday night when you may enjoy the 'Magic Lantern Picture show'. You can drink from a good selection of real ales and enjoy the most unusual film and and music selection. Great for lovers of 'The Old Grey Whistle Test'.. Remember Focus? A real chill evening though.

Pleased to confirm that the pub is open - understand was closed for a month or so due to the charming and slightly eccentric landlord holding out against a rent increase. Went to the Dolphin last Sunday after a crawl in Winchester on Saturday; the Dolphin being one of 3 pubs we visited in the village. The locals are lucky as all three were good, but the Dolpin my favourite. Excellent pint of Sharps Doombar. We stayed for 2 or 3 hours and all in our party of 5 stuck to their first beer choice which would seem to indicate that the qulaity was good across the range. Both the pub and the colllection in the village recommended for a visit.
It was still closed when I attemtped to visit it a couple of weeks ago. Anyone know what the situation is?
When I went there on Saturday afternoon, there was a sign saying that the pub was closed because their beer delivery had not turned up! Should I be worried about this?
This is generally a very good pub, has quite a varied customer base. Has regular music 3 nights a week (folk stuff mainly). Has a ever changing selection of real ales as well as the usual lagers. Serving of food can be a bit erratic, and frequently is not available. Shame as it used be the main reason for me going here.

This is an excellent pub run by Madbat and his wife. The food is usually themed from around the world. I've eaten there twice and it's superb, as is the range of beers. Haven't had a chance to catch the regular music evenings but I intend to asap.
Good music ale and atmosphere. never tried the food but heard many good things about it from friends. only problem is beautiful beer garden gets no sun on summer afternoons due to surrounding trees.
Good pub, well worth a visit, couldn't be any more convenient for the train. Eight handpumps serving a good selection of ales in decent condition, although a bit too chilled for my personal taste - Hop Back Entire Stout - Mmmmmmm! Fairly young and lively crowd, nice atmosphere, although personally I preferred the South Western across the railway bridge.
Excellent pub next to St Denys railway station. Serves food and has a selection of real ales with regular guest ones. There's live music during the week of a roots/blues/folk variety. Friendly pub, comfortable and there's a beer garden. Probably my favourite one in Southampton, and nearest!

I am wondering if you can try and help me locate Ronnie Adams. He has brothers Frank (Southampton) and Robert(Hampstead London). Frank and Ronnie are/were frequent patrons of "The Dolphin" pub in Southampton. Frank was previouly married to Pauline. I was Ronnie's girlfriend in 1987/1988 but have subsequently lost contact. I originate from Zimbabwe and am currently living in South Africa. Please help me if possible. Unfortunately there is no e-mail address listed on The Dolphin's website.

Well worth a visit - beer is good but if you're a Real Ale fan make sure you follow up with a visit to the South Western Arms over the road - residents of St Deny's are lucky to have 2 of the best pubs in Hampshire on their doorstep, Live music, good beer -great.
This pub has great music on midweek, good beer, excellent atmosphere and easy to get to on the train, and the gardens ok,if you cant get a seat inside you can still hear the music..

Visited this pub on Sunday 15 February after a visit to the South Western on the opposite side of the railway line. The Dolphin is easily the better of the two (for me, anyway). Real ales were excellent (including two dark ales), atmosphere very warm and friendly and the food looked scrummy. Was sorry to leave but had to get the train back to Basingstoke. Would go there again.

Next to the Station at St Denys,Southampton. Fantastic real ale, fantastic home cooked food. Brilliant atmosphere. Probably the best pub in Southampton.
