Didn't mind this place - it's a proper locals pub in the middle of a residential street. Beer was drinkable if not great.

Further to my last review, the pub now serves real cider and perry from the Weston's stable.

Decent little boozer in a nice area of town. Good ale selection (despite the guests being Wells-brewed beers) and I had a cracking pint of the newly resurrected Younger's No.3. The pub has a very friendly landlord who - after she enquired what ciders were on - informed my wife that he's currently trying to get Charles Wells to change their cider policies and allow him to serve real cider and not Strongbow as so many people ask for it. Good to see a landlord trying to give the customer what they want despite being hamstrung by the brewers that he works for.
All-in-all, we really enjoyed our break from the Welly for the night and went here and the Cricketers and enjoyed both of them immensely. Recommended.

Backstreet pub in a more upmarket area of Bedford than most. Candles on the tables create a bit of romantic atmosphere. So it may be popular with couples. Beers were all from the Wells & Youngs range - Eagle IPA, Waggledance, Directors & London Gold. Original frosted windows and bare boards lend a traditional look and this is a pub that has been refurbished without losing too much character. Modern artwork is for sale on the walls.

first visit, i never seem to wander quite this far out of the town centre, initial impressions are good, smart, tidy, friendly service. A Wells tied pub with guest beers, the guest beer on this occasion being "Courage Best" which of course is Wells ! so more a friend than a guest then.... Ales are served through a swan neck/sparkler thus ensuring a flat pint and virually unavoidable short measure - sadly a trait of many Wells houses.

Under new management, but the Devvy remains a great place to meet. The pool table TVs and juke box have gone and been replaced by softer lighting and candles. Martin and Naomi are welcoming and have expanded the selection of beers, which are well kept and reasonably priced. A different experience but one well worth seeking out!

Great little back street/community boozer. Wells Eagle and a guest ale always on, Bombardier less often but the beer is well kept.

Ignore 'sandpiper' below. Judging by his/her reviews of other pubs I've frequented they don't actually appear to like ANY pubs; best stay at home with some chilled, gassy cans and wallow in your own misery.

Usually has two beer festivals a year, early in May and around Xmas, with a dozen or more ales but well worth a visit at any time of year. The only downside is that as a non Bedfordian it's a bit of a stagger back to the Bus Station.

The 'Devvy' is a traditional pub located in a quiet side street in quite a well-heeled residential area. Pool table and fairly basic wooden furniture in the front bar, with a comfortable looking lounge further back. Three of the four handpumps in operation, with Tribute plus a couple of offerings from the Wells & Youngs brewery (including a decent pint of Eagle IPA at �2.50). Worth seeking out.

could be a nice pub but the beer is pretty undrinkable and the landlady is a miserable old cow even demanding the bar newspaper back if you try to read. Yet another lacklustre pub in Bedford

Lovely little pub. Tucked away in a back street & serves proper beer. Warm & Friendly welcome. Nice garden. Val the landlady is great - Poker in the rear on Fridays.

Tucked away on Dudley Street this one is well worth seeking out. Nice garden, good beer and wine (if that's your thing). Odd opening hours so be aware.

Homely and a good selection of beers. Recently refurbished and retains a lot of character and good atmosphere. Run by ages by Irish Tom who was one of Bedford's friendliest landlords. Pool table, skittles and a quality old jukeobx! Nice local for those of us lucky enough to live near it

From October 4th 1856 to September 9th 1858 Charles Wells served on the Devonshire as Midshipman sailing between London and India. The next year her set sail on the Kent.
The Kent Arms (Salisbury Street) is the sister pub of the Devonshire Arms (1899).
As well as Charles Wells' merchant service record you can inspect an interesting collection of Devonshire Regiment as well as HMS Devonshire history. Winner of the Charles Wells estate best wine pub of the year I prefer a couple of Bombardiers.
For the historian the previous pub sign showed the Cavendish family coat of arms but nobody knew why and it had been replaced and put in the garden.
