Old England, Montpelierback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
A traditional old Wadworths pub located in a small cul-de-sac just next to Montpelier health centre. Its a good size pub, divided in to three rooms as well as an adjacent beer garden which looked to include a covered smoking area. It has a slightly bohemian feel to it and whilst there were a few characters around as might be expected in this area, there was nothing that made me, or Mrs. B., feel uncomfortable.
The main bar is an L-shape at the front of the pub and has a traditional pub ambience with wooden boards on the floor, some wood panelling on the walls, green paintwork, candles on all the tables, a selection of books on the window sill and an illuminated trophy cabinet. There were plenty of tables and chairs, a real log fire roaring away in a cast iron fire place and numerous old pictures on the walls. Background music was playing through some speakers which was perhaps slightly too loud, or at least too boomy. A combination perhaps of the music being played and the speaker being right up in the corner of the room.
To the rear is another room which had a plasma TV showing the football and a number of punters were gathered around watching. Hanging below the TV were a selection of colourful football shirts. Beyond this is a raised area with some wooden railing around it. There were some large floor standing speakers here as well that looked as though they may get pressed in to use for live music, and there were a number of posters on the walls advertising forthcoming bands. Up a few stairs to the right was another room with a pool table. Food offering seemed restricted to a few filled rolls behind the bar, but then this looks to be a pub that concentrates on drinking. Barmaid seemed friendly enough.
Beers were all from the Wadworths stable with their 6X, Henrys IPA and Old Timer. Ciders were Stowford Press and Taunton Traditional.

i guess its a wadworth pub from the three handpumps all offering wadworth brews, the bishops tipple was ok and went down nicely on the warm sunny beer patio,3.50pint seemed a tad harsh though,6/10

Now the Wicked Witch of the West has gone, the OE is on the way back to being a decent pub again. It's now managed by the same team as the Farm and the Cadbury. The dealers have followed the WWW and the garden is once again a pleasant place.
Unfortunately, the garden is now closed at 11pm due to a recently-arrived NIMBY neighbour and our Beloved Council. I've been drinking there since 1973, but mo one asked me. Still, it's well worth a visit.

Davedavedave, considering your only three comments on this site are for this pub, I would say that you have some kind of problem with it, hence the negative comments. I don't care what you think. Just wanted to present another side of the case for montpelier.

Grow up LukeD, do you think I care what you think?

Davedavedave, you are showing your class prejudice clearly here. Whilst I have no need to stand up for the Old E, plenty of other pubs in the area are safe and decent places to drink. You seem to be too scared to drink in this area, but please don't wrap it up with your sense of who is 'decent' and who is not. You think that people go to the 'Cadbury because they like trouble ?? No. You think the area is unpoliced and unregulated ??

Hannah, are you just cutting and pasting the same comment across various websites? Judging by the comments about 4 shots for a fiver, I reckon you may have a business interest in this pub of some sort. The Old England Montpelier is a well known dealing centre, and as I pointed out before is pretty anti social with its late night 'music' as well. People visiting Bristol wouldn't aim for a 'nice' drink in St Pauls/Montpelier unless they like trouble, decent people would head for any Pub in Clifton.

I have recently been to The Old England, which was my first time adn I found it to be quite the opposite of the negative reviews below. It was a very relaxed atmosphere, with friendly bar staff. It has an excellent terrace with a heated smoking shelter. I did not see any type of drug dealing / dodgy characters. All the people were very nice adn well mixed.
I will definately be going back again & would recommend it to anyway who wants a nice chilled out drink. On weekends they also do 4 selected shots for 5 - bargain!

Eeerily quiet Mick? This pub is clearly a home to the dealers and lowlife of Montpelier, and is in serious risk of getting in to trouble with the authorities in regard to pissing off local residents with massively over loud distorted music pumping out in to the early hours of the morning when it probably doesn't have a appropriate license.

Used to come here many years ago when the place was full of character. Now very dull, very average beer and probably won;t be returning.
|
Could someone tell the dealers upstairs that the Smoking Ban includes their products too? I didn't care to, mind!
|
Used to be the ultimate crusty pub and be absolutely heaving. Notoriously difficult to manage - much drug dealing in the past.
Last couple of times I have been its been eerily quiet. Really lost it a bit. Though it wouldnt take much to make it popular again.
One of the best and biggest beer terraces in Bristol.

Used to be a great pub, particularly years ago under Maurice Clarke and recently under Gerry Mogg. The current tenant is systematically alienating regulars, barring those who won't leave and dragging it down into the mud. Due to over-amplified music, it is impossible to hold a conversation at the bar, and the ventilation system is unreliable and rarely switchd on.
If you like choking and being deafened at the same time, it's for you.
Believe me, as a long-time regular, I say this more in sadness than in anger.
