This is what a pub should be, good beer, good food, friendly and helpful staff.

Remote pub on the "other side of the river" with great views of the river. Friendly pub with good beer and also did cream teas, a bonus for my wife who was driving at the time.

This place gets better all the time. The new owners have been in for just over a year. The food is mostly fresh home made and reasonably priced with big portions. The beer is excellent and obviously well maintained pipes. A range of guest ales, constantly changing. Friendly staff, the way a pub should be!

We went here on Jubilee Bank Holiday Monday at lunchtime. We had the Fish and Chips and the Mullet stuffed with cous cous served with red cabbage and carrots from the blackboard menu.We had a half of Wadworths Red white and Blue Ale and a half of the other guest Ale.Both very good and the food good. The bar staff and the Landlady were pleasant. We could sit indoors by the window enjoying the view with our dog sitting at our feet. The pub dog came over to us and made friends too.The toilets were clean and tidy.Another 8/10 from us.

We revisited this pub on Saturday 5th November at about 1.30pm.We knew the beer was good and that our dog would be welcome so we returned to try the food. There were a few lunchtime customers inside. There was London Pride and Harvey's on draught.I had a nice pint of the London Pride and my other half had a half of the Harvey's.We ordered the fish and chips from the bar menu (9.50) and the Monkfish on pasta (8.50) from the blackboard. This arrived within 15 minutes and we enjoyed this whilst sitting at a table outside on the decking area overlooking the harbour mouth. The fish and chips was served with peas and tartare sauce and was a generous portion. The Monkfish was served with a tomato and herb sauce on tagliatelli and had the appearance of a large starter and not a main course. However the fish had a good texture and flavour.Condiments were brought out to us by the other lady from the bar.I had the Pumpkin Tart with cream and my other half had the mint ice cream for dessert. This was very nice and enjoyed with an alcohol free Becks lager. The Ladies and Gents toilets were clean and tidy with soap and water and a working hand dryer. When we were leaving the lady asked if i had enjoyed the Monkfish
which i had.I thought it inappropriate to tell her in front of her other customers that the portion could have been larger. All in all we had a very pleasant experience of good hospitality in agreeable surroundings so this deserves a 7 1/2 out of 10.

New owners and a considerable change. Faminy run, friendly, welcoming, dog friendly and typical pub atmosphere. The menus have been overhauled, no more freezer to plate.

We popped in here on Wednesday 28th September at around 6pm.It had been a hot sunny day. There were a few people in the Pub.There was Harveys and Black Sheep on draught. We had a pint of Black Sheep, lime and soda and a couple of bags of crisps for about 4.70 i think. We had our dog with us which was allowed in the bar area. The kind landlord gave us a couple of dog biscuits aswell. We sat outside on the bench. There are also tables outside with a pleasant view across the harbour mouth towards Seaford. This pub is 'under new management' the sign outside said and they were having an opening night on the Friday. We will go here again and try the food.A very pleasant end to a good day on the beach.

The location is the thing here...magnificent views over Seaford Bay to Seaford Head. And the architecture of the Pub; pleasent interior and upper covered terrace allowing good views rain or shine. On a sunny day its a great place to have a meal or a quiet drink. Must be a great place to watch out a storm thrashing Newhaven lightouse and pier. The menu is very decent with some interesting specials. Ales presently include London Pride and Harvey's Best- not a great range for the ale enthusiast, but its well kept. Now they have shifted the salvage vessel that's been sitting on the doorstep for 10 months you can enjoy the superb views once again. The propritoress is one of the hardest working and courteous landladies around and this is an establishment that deserves to do well.

Friendly welcome from landlady and pleasant pint or two of Harveys yesterday afternoon, having walked down the river from Lewes. Good, old fashioned pub and a great place to while away an hour or two looking across the harbour entrance towards Seaford.

Good food and good ale. Friendly staff. Shame about the scrap on the harbour but a lovely distant view.

Cheap food couple of ales and lovely views across the Port. Handy for Newhaven FC but its a little trek from the station on a rainy day

The Hope has the most lovely staff, especialy Tricia, and terrific views over the sea and to Seaford Beach. The food is OK. It can't be too bad as we go there at least once a weekend!!!!!

All comments still stand - Great food, Dog friendly and a very warm welcome! Usually has Harveys and London Pride on the pumps as well as a fair selection of Lager and the reglar second choice Smiths, too!

This is one of the best pubs in Newhaven, recently refurbished and has a great area upstairs where you can watch the ferries coming in and out while you eat.
Food has always been good, service is good, friendly staff, somewhere to take friends lunchtime and know they will be imrpessed. Dont want too many people to find this place, its great as it is.

Very impressive. Lovely friendly staff, nicely kept beer and a good selection of good quality food. It looked like it has had a recent re-fit and its very comfortable without being over the top.

Nice roaring real fire on a wet and cold day was very welcoming and our meal was excellent. This will be a regular haunt now, please don't tell too many people as we want to be able to get in !

Oh yes and as we are doggie owners they could not have been more welcoming, doggie biscuits were forthcoming as soon as they noticed we had our dog with us.

The minute you walk into this pub, you are made to feel welcome by the friendly staff. The pub has a real fire and lots of nooks and crannys to sneak away to. The menu is varied and food of a good quality, with the good location by the marina its an all round top pub.

Well worth the small trek towards the beach front/harbour. Have visited this pub many times and each visit never fails to disappoint. The Food is fantastic. From experience our food has always been freshly cooked, plentiful, piping hot and delivered rapidly. Beer is good, serving a nice pint of John Smiths Smooth (personal tipple sorry), Staff are very pleasant and more than happy to help, surroundings are clean and tidy with plenty of table space available (including some outside for a day visit). Plenty of Car parking available directly opposite the pub. Highly recommended.
A 'Good' Dog friendly pub with water available.
Well Done all at the Hope.
