One of the best proper local pubs weve come across in a long time! Larger than life, most welcoming landlord, landlady and staff. Good mix of locals and passers-by who are all included when they walk in no cliques or funny looks, everyones friendly. Beer is kept perfectly (Bishops Finger particularly good) and the food is excellent and reasonably priced. Nice garden at the back and theres always something going on. Well worth repeat visits!!

A friend who lives nearby took me to this pub. Wow its a real gem, nice garden for sun and smoke. Had master brew for first time and loved it. Too hot to eat,but food being served looked scrumptious. Will cum again when in the newhaven.

stumbled across this nice Shearperd Neame pub whilst lost in Newhaven! tucked out of the way, well worth visiting. 3 S.N. Ales on hand pumps, well kept. Looks like a nice garden out the back (it was raining, so didn't take advantage of it ) . Many 'evenings' arranged - felt like a good 'community' pub.

Service is perfectly acceptable, Shepherd & Neame beers are the next best thing to herveys probably and a lovely cosy place with a roaring fire on cold days and comfy armchairs. However, the food is this place's biggest selling point. Good quality ingredients used (a little more expensive than other places but then one can just have a delicious baguette) and I can't think of any other pub nearby that can offer dishes like Woodpigeon with caramelised pear. Wonderful.

Lovely pub but landlady and chef unfriendly. We had some very nice food but when we politely complained about one poor fish dish we were dismissed out of hand. Not the sort of service you should expect anywhere.

This pub has changed dramatically in the last few years, Shepherd and Neame have invested a lot of money in it, with a large extention incorporating new kitchen and dining area, and a large decked area out the back. The pub is very welcoming and the food is probably the best in the area. I would have preferred Harveys ale's but you can't have everything.

once again i would like to make it known that this was a great pub when martin and janet had it. The present landlady has no customer skills whatsoever, myself and several friends will vouch for this, and the proof of the pudding is , we all drink in another pub. Having had my previous comments removed from the website for whatever reason, i hope this stays on long enough for people to see an honest comment.

nice clean pub,Unfortunately no local harveys ales, however an acceptable pint of spitfire obtained,as walkers we were welcomed & landlady seemed fine to me (see previous post). would recommend.
