Was last in this pub about three years ago and asked my partner whether the women's toilets were as filthy as the men's, which stank and was flooded. Having recently dropped in one midweek evening for a quick drink, guess what? The men's toilet is STILL flooded and stinking, as is the nearby carpet in the bar. God knows what the kitchen must be like - the only food I'd eat there would be crisps.

Excellent value, good wholesome food in big portions. 4 decent real ales, and although there is no real/still cider or perry, they have Stowford Press on draught which is better than most.

oh vivhenfield, not sure what beers you've been drinking, but you ask any of the real "loyal" regulars that use the plough, they will tell you the beer is 100% above the old standard, and i guess if seamus was that good he'd still be there i would have thought and not left if everything was so perfect as you see it, nevermind, look to the future of the plough, and to me carole and neil seem to be doing s good job, and i will tell them next time i'm in!

To say that the Plough has "gone downhill" is stupid. Every pub landlord and landlady bring their own style to a pub - and no doubt one style fits better with some people than another. So be it. The beer at the pub is consistently in excellent condition - Harveys, London Pride and Speckled Hen as standard, with a regular guest beer (such as Doombar) at a special price. The food has retained its good quality, with the same chef as before. One or two of the old regulars have moved on - new ones have moved in - and, as a regular drinker in the Plough (it's my local), I like it's friendliness and convivial atmosphere. For those who don't like it - there are other choices in the village - and you're welcome to them!

well everyone is entitled to their opinion I guess, but Im a Harveys drinker and I have to say that the beer is superbly kept at the Plough and always tastes really good. The atmosphere is that of a true country locals pub and I for one hope it stays that way. Well done to Carol & Neil for giving it their all. They are well liked by many.

i dont agree with beerbelliedbob, seamus kept the best beer for miles, ask any camra member. and the pub has really gone down hill since he left. the new people arnt landlords.
|
i agree with ampthill11, staff are all the same, always very friendly, beers are 100% better than when seamus was there, think he spent to many hours drinking with the punters than cleaning his pipes! lol

I actually find the pub better since the new owners took over. Neil & Carol are extremely nice people who work very hard at making everybody feel welcome. Most of the staff are the same as before, and they still have the same chef. Good selection of ales & they serve the best Harveys in the village which is good enough for me !
|
Not as good as it was when Seamus & Carol ran it. The new staff aren't anywhere near as friendly and as a result it never feels very welcoming. Still, it isn't bad, just could be better. Normally has a guest ale from a micro e.g. Kings, Cottage and so on. The Cat & Canary in Henfield (not on Beerintheevening) tends to keep 1 or 2 interesting guests too

here here will! the pickled old man should get down the white heart with mr happy
|
the_pickled_old_man should clear off to some other pub if he doesn't like the "same people talking the same s**t". They're called locals, they're a very friendly bunch, good fun, and they keep the pub going through thick and thin. Seamus and Carol have now gone and the pub is in the hands of Neil and Carol (different Carol!) - good luck to them.

Nice little pub in Henfield high street. Excellent choice of food, lovely log fire and cosy in winter. Same people talking the same s**t day in day out, which takes away what could be a very warming atmosphere of a lovely village pub.

The atmosphere in this good little pub is much improved since the smoking ban. The cheerful and efficient bar and food service continues. The beer is well kept. For the size of the pub there really is a very good choice of food, 3 menues - tapas/bar, main meal and on the blackboard meals of the day. The food is well prepared, good value, served promptly in homely surroundings. If you like real chips with your meal you will not be disapointed with what is served here. Obviously regulars agree.

Can't imagine when Brightonfan7 was in the Plough, but the food is very good. Christmas and New Year was packed out. At 5pm every day, the pub is heaving and, if the regulars have changed, I don't know who they are, because I'e seen the same faces in here year in and year out. You must have hit a bad night, old cock!

What has happened to this place..... where is the Tapas menu.... Whats happened to the food ..gone downhill.... and what has happened to those buzzing Friday nights of a couple of years ago. Only been away from the village a couple of years and this place has died a death, even the regulars have changed.

This place has improved beyond recognition in the last few months. Much cleaner, friendlier and more welcoming. Four ales on, generally two changing weekly, and well kept. Happy to sit in the bar now which was a complete fog of stale smoke before!

My local and, taken over by Seamus and Carol a few weeks ago, is doing very well. The food and service are back on track, the bar has been redecorated and there are guest beers each week - enjoy the Timothy Taylor "Landlord" and Harvey "Hadlow" bitters when you can get them! Like most pubs, there's a different clientele for various parts of the day. The best time to drink (in my view) is the magic time after work from 5pm to around 6.30pm, and the best time to eat is at lunchtime and mid-evening. The locals are noisy and friendly, so don't be afraid! The pub has no car park, so put yours in the "White Hart" car park and make life more difficult for the miserable git that runs the "Hart"...

A homely pub with loyal core of regulars, good choice of beers, my Harveys was in good condition. Attentive staff, varied tapas menu, tasty cooking and personal service, a bit of a squeeze if more than 20 customers. Impossible to eat in an environment of exhaled cigarette smoke, but you can go into the small courtyard at the back if the weather allows. The smoking ban will make things more pleasant for everyone, including the staff, in little pubs like this. Using this pub is easier if you know where to park.
|
God help this pub when the smoking laws come in on 1st July. It's a very smoky pub and definitely a pub for regulars only. Agree about the food though. Nice tapas

Tapas in the restaurant is excellent. Really good menu and good restaurant. But the bar area lets the side down. Tiny bar. And it has become a local bar for local people. If you went in there on a Saturday night and bought a drink and sat down in a seat you get the feeling all conversation would stop and you'd be told that John always sits in that seat. Terrible lighting and terrible decor for such a tiny bar. You feel like you're sitting in someone's lounge. Shame really because the restaurant is fab.

Four cask ales - Kings Horsham Best, London Pride, Harvey's Best & Websters Cask Yorkshire Bitter. The pub has a restaurant section and a pub section. Olives & cheese on the bar on Sundays. A pleasant place, but lacking distinctive character. The choice of beers, however, lifts this place just above the average.
|
very busy pub with freshly prepared tapas, better than some i have had in spain!, nice beers, friendly staff, only hickup was a bit of a wait for food, but it was worth the wait, and it was completely full, so i wasn't complaining, keep it up!

Cozy pub with good food, excellent Harveys and friendly bar staff. Called there after a country walk with kids and dogs and no problems entering with either (all well behaved). Lounge bar has more formal dining area and the food coming out there looked top notch. Will definately call again.
