user reviews of Waggon and Horses, Brentford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Now demolished as the derelict site next door is redeveloped into smart flats.

Now closed and borded up with all signage removed

This has all the potential to be a great pub, but it is hampered by the long standing vacant building site next to (and behind) it!

Ignore any of my reviews below, I haven't been in this pub for about a year due to the way the Eastern European owners treat their staff!
CheekyShepherd - 29 Aug 2009 02:06
The below reviews are very accurate - this Fuller's pub is not one of their best. It has an interesting-ish wood-pannelled interior but a general air of unlovedness pervades the place. Handpumps offering Pride and Chiswick on my visit, with the clip for ESB turned around: not sure whether the Chiswick was keg or hand-drawn, as I didn't have it. I didn't like any of the pubs I went in on my stroll round Brentford, but this was the best of a bad bunch.

This is a Fullers pub, but I only saw Pride, ESB and Chiswick on. At least there was a Chiswick clip on one of the handpumps, but as I went for the Pride, I didnt encounter the - is it keg or handpump? - dilemma that previous posters have mentioned. Anyway, this is now a one-room pub, but there are vestiges of its previous multi-room identity in the remains of some screens. There is still a fair amount of wood panelling in place, which looks to be original inter-war decor. But now its a pretty unremarkable pub. There is a pool table but covered when I was in with the staff removing the remains of a buffet from it, presumably having been enjoyed by a private party. Not worth going out of your way to find, but OK if you get to the Express Tavern over the road at 3.05 PM to find it closed.

ESB and Pride and keg Chiswick. As Strongers says below there is a handpump for the Chiswick but when ordering (and also others after me) the barman said it was keg. Pint of Pride I had was reasonable. No bottles of any note and a basic pub but on a quiet lunchtime the barman and chef were very friendly and welcoming.
GuideDogSaint - 29 Mar 2009 21:30
How many pints had you had before the pint of Chiswick in question Strongers?

I would imagine that if you couldn't see the barmen pulling the pint from the keg in the first place that maybe the triviality of whether the Bitter was coming from the keg or cask may have gone unnoticed.

As far as the Waggon and Horses goes, I went in here a few weeks ago and despite being well and truly beaten on the pool table by a bald headed Irish chap (Brian) I must say that I had a very enjoyable time.

The service was great, the food affordable and generally a good atmosphere.

I was in here last week with a few work colleagues and ordered a pint of Chiswick. The barman disappeared away from the ale pumps and returned with my pint of Chiswick. After some wandering along the bar I found that they were also selling keg Chiswick and I had in fact been served this. I told the barman that I was really after some real ale and he informed me that they did not have Chiswick from the hand pump. I would have thought that the clip would have been turned around or taken off as the first thing seen on the bar as you walk in are pumps for the Pride, ESB and Chiswick. It also doesnt help that the Chiswick keg is hidden behind the food menus at the side of the till.

Maybe a little more thought needs to be put in.

In regards to the food, Ive not eaten here since the rancid burger with sweaty chef drippings I received about a year ago. They are now selling meals at lunchtimes for 2.50 so I think you can make your own minds up about the quality.

This place was very good about 7 years ago and then it went downhill until an improvement a couple of years ago. It then hit the bottom of the barrel and is slowly picking up again, but it is still not a patch on what it used to be.

" the locals tell me (pffft) that the quality of the beer has improved significantly and the food is the nicest as far as any pub on Kew Bridge road goes "

-Well the locals must be very stupid indeed then as there really was no excuse for the joke of a meal they served me with. Beers are fine, food appalling.

A dull lifeless pub - bit like the one in snatch.

whoagigi - 1 Dec 2008 11:16
i've been coming to the Waggon only for a couple of years but if ever i saw a case of a man with a grudge it has to be whoagigi. the fella he spoke to behind the bar is definitely not polish but from montengro and his english does need perfecting but it is nowhere near the standard that that idiot described. forthcoming football fixtures are on a blackboard for all to see. the locals tell me that the quality of the beer has improved significantly and the food is the nicest as far as any pub on Kew Bridge road goes. the chef is from Brazil and her food is delish, not to mention flexible (ie home cut fries instead of chips etc) there are always at least one or two regulars who are happy to talk to you, (unlike some other pubs nearby where u get bottled just for asking for a light). Nice layout in the traditional fullers style make for an enjoyable evening out especially on a monday where Karaoke is the place to be. Barstaff are friendly and courteous, always ready to go the extra mile. all in all a good place to go and enjoy a good pint.

I've been on BITE a number of times - usually just for a laugh, to see what kind of comments my fave (and least fave) watering holes have gathered. I have never felt compelled however to write my own scathing review - until now that is!

I went to the Waggon and Horses last sunday. A decent enough looking boozer, I was merely looking for somewhere not too far from home to grab a pint, something to eat and watch the footer. When I went in it was pretty much empty, apart from one guy on his own watching the Formula 1 in the corner and the barman. I went up to the bar and asked if the football was on. The guy was Polish, I think and his English was pretty poor. If anything he was the least-credible bartender Ive ever seen. About as much personality as my big toe. "Sorry mate im just here to fill up the Jonny machine" woud have been more plausible answer. He disappeared out the back for what seemed an eternity before returning and telling me that "Yes, we show the foot." Content, I ordered a Fosters and a lazagne and chips. The food came to about 6.95 - Not too bad - the menu was the type youd expect to see in a gastropub so I thought, hopefully the food will be of similar standard.
Having been sat down for about 10 minutes and constantly looking round at the guy to pull the screen down, he finally obliged. Then followed about 5 minutes of blind channel scrolling before he declared, "We don't have the foot." No, what they actually had was some german sky sports package! Handy eh?!
When my food finally arrived it was disgusting. It looked like someone had plonked an Iceland lazagne (from frozen) in the microwave and it hadnt even fully defrosted. It was a square, hard, cheap mess and the chips were poor also. In the short time I had been sat down an old boy in his dog had arrived and the dog was yapping like mad. As you can imagine I was royally peed off by this point. I went up to the bar and paid for my experience by my card. In a funny twist of fate, I had anticipated being there a few hours and had left my card behind the bar. As it turned out I was there all of 20 mins.
In fairness the lady who had been in the kitchen (presumable chief-microwaver) was apologetic that the football was not on and blamed the installation engineer who had "messed it up." She had, however no reservation of charging me the whole amount for my meal, something I returned to her practically uneaten. AND they charged me and extra quid for paying on card!

A joke of a pub, appalling food, people who are totally unsuited to running a pub. Pure rubbish, avoid!
whoagigi - 4 Oct 2008 14:01
New management, new chef and new menu by the looks of things. A great little piece of the world!
CheekyShepherd - 16 Jul 2008 15:51
Be honest the place is rubbish.

When Alan was the Chef the food was good (He came from Morgans up the road)- lovely Sunday lunch.

However when he left the owners lost interest it would seem. It is usually empty. I didn't know Alan had left and went for a Sunday lunch. Price was up by a pound and it was inedible. Meat I think was from a buffalo - definitely not a proper oven joint. Veg was uncooked and cold. About 4 small roasties. I told the lady it was terrible - she knows me as I've eaten there a number of times. To her credit they didn't charge me.

I don't know if they have another Chef now - it may have improved.
GrimsbyJohn - 27 Jun 2008 14:05
Sold to St George for redevelopment - just like the old Plough next door was about 15 years ago.
robhealy - 4 Mar 2008 11:11
Monday nights (karaoke night) in this pub are fantastic!
The food is great, all freshly cooked and Alan is a great chef. Yes, i may look pricey on paper but its worth it!

regards to greendragon (who im guessing is a local) i am a barmaid in this pub and i am English.
Little_Miss - 15 Feb 2008 14:53
karaoke wkd and joe just so cool. pub shit and there are some right chavs in there. there are some nice people like adam and sam, but all in all good night for a sing a long
anonymous - 10 May 2007 13:35
Vast improvement from when I was last in there in the summer. Friendly staff and their food was being lapped up by the lunchtime crowd. The new management seem to be making a great effort so Im not sure about Greendragons claim that it is being demolished Sour bigot me thinks!

The pool table is still there and they have added a dart board, which is great as most establishments are removing them. A lot of the old seating has been removed and some couches have been put in their place.

My Strongbow was crisp and my friends informed me that the Pride was far better than it used to be.

I wont comment on what a night in here has to offer as I have only ever been at lunch, but it would be a good venue for away fans getting off at Kew Bridge Station on their way to Griffin Park.

Strongers - 15 Mar 2007 14:20
I've been drinking in this pub for the last 7 months and I think the staff is very friendy and the drink and food at reasonable price and very good quality. To me, it doesn't particulary matter where they come from if they care about their customers!!!! I reckon that greendraggon, though being English possibly, probably doesn't speak proper English himself and has very narrow-minded opinions due to lack of education.
driner1963 - 11 Jan 2007 20:59
Now run by Serbians who have never run a pub before. Bar staff are all eastern european, mostly with only a very basic grasp of the english language. Claim to be family friendly, I think this means they will serve alcohol to just about anyone over the age of 12 as the frequent piles of vomit outside the door will testify to. Live bands at weekends though they have no inclination to acquire a public performance licence. Food can be good, can be dire but would you really trust a kitchen in a pub where most of the light bulbs don't work (eastern european thing - saves money - same reason they no longer have sky sports). Soon to be demolished to make acess to the construction site next door.
greendragon - 10 Dec 2006 01:43
I think this pub has vastly improved since the dank, filthy Plough next door was demolished. Haven't been in either for 8 years, partly because many of my friends said it was racist.

Not bad, considering the location (Brentford isn't the nicest of places to drink, day OR night), good range of drinks inexpensively priced and well maintained and quite clean. Wouldn't mind paying another visit to Jo's Karaoke in the near future.
CheekyShepherd - 26 Sep 2006 19:38
Avoid unless you are a Drunk or fancy a scrap, or both.
TheClaw - 27 Jul 2005 12:54
Very bland and ordinary with bar staff who didn't seem to have much of a clue. And think that there used to be another pub next door, called the Plough. I can only wonder what that was like. Look on this pub, ye thirsty, and despair.
beeronaut - 18 Jun 2005 22:40
Dismal. This pub is right next to my office block but I only drink here when forced to go for a xmas drink with the co-workers...Smells of stale beer, frequented by all the local drunks and is located next to an abandoned development site which smells...stagnant, to put it mildly. There are only two redeeming features to this place - the cute new aussie barman and the twisty fries, which are admittedly yummy.
anonymous - 14 Jun 2005 13:31
Attractive pub from the outside - leaded frosted windows etc - but inside is a disappointment. Rather bland and the light pine colour scheme for the furniture and bar area that Fullers seem keen on doesn't help. Having said that, the London Pride was first rate and the bar staff seemed friendly enough. Oh, and I wasn't the only under 55 in there by any means.
JohnBonser - 18 Jan 2005 13:19
i agree with anon........i felt like i was stuck in some strange time warp here. looks better from the outside, inside almost like not just a 'coronation st' set but maybe an old episode of only fools & horses, by that i dont mean its a good place to go its completely souless......but the older generation here meeting up with their buddies seem quite happy so i guess it must have something.....but what??? i have no idea... would rather keep walkin to somewhere else
millym - 22 Feb 2004 23:25
awful.......reminds me of being in a 1970's coronation st set for some reason. but the older generation who gather here to play card games & have a few ales seem to be quite comfy.not for anyone under 55.
anonymous - 8 Feb 2004 15:57
Throroughly depressing place to drink. Big and open, it belies its traditonal pub decor. If Harvester made night clubs they would look like this.
Good for: the first pint of many at best
