user reviews of O'Riordans, Brentford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

After visits to the Black Dog Beer House (I won't review this again) and the Royal Horse Guardsman (not listed on BITE), our next stop was due to be O'Riordan's. But, the pub is now closed. Apparently, it is due to be converted into flats.

Good spot, decent pint of Guinness for only £3.50, and I imagine the lagers to be cheaper. No real ales on tap but the pub more than makes up for it with a lively crowd and a steady stream of regular faces in there, who keep it ticking over most nights of the week. They had guinness dublin porter on tap when I was there last month, which was a surprise as I haven't seen it tapped up elsewhere in London.

They tend to have the football on the TV in the front, while the GAA and rugby is shown down the back. It can get wedged when big rugby matches are on, but usually you'll get a stool for yourself.

As someone who appreciates no-nonsense bar menus, I can say that the stew is decent at £7 (only food I've had there). The roast on a Sunday looks fairly hearty, and sells well.

Glad to see "The Royal Tar" is still going strong even with a different name! Used to get brought here as a kid with my dad, granddad and my mums brothers. Mrs Dicks was the landlady and there were no ladies toilets!
A trip down memory lane.

Many years since last visited and of course totally changed in that time, however it remains a pleasant enough place and in a fine location. Unable to comment on the ales as on soft drinks but fellow-drinkers were amiable enough. Not sure about the small lad, much scratching under the polyester but that may have had something to do with the football on Sky.

A nice alternative to the Strand-on-the-Green hostelries.

Another ruined pub. All the good staff have been sacked and too much modernisation. Goodbye.
ixion - 20 Nov 2011 17:22
Guinness AND Murphy's! Spoilt for choice and good prices too.

Seems to have got a bit moody in here of late - the barman was less than helpful, and he was playing VERY loud irish music at three on a saturday afternoon when the pub was very quiet. Finished my pint and wandered into Chiswick. Shame really this place was one of my favourites

This place is still going strong, great place to have a quiet pint or watch some sports

Since my last visit in May 2008 the name has changed, as mentioned a few times by others, and some patio doors have been put into the back wall which leads onto the decking which has now been completed. The rest of the pub is the same as before except for some modern tables and chairs in the rear and the addition of an extremely nice barmaid.

The Pride cost me 2.50 a pint, which probably made it taste better than it was and Youngs Ordinary was also available alongside a hand pump that was not being used.

I liked it in here before the refurbishment and I think it may have just got a little bit better.

Was looking for a pub to watch the rugby on Saturday. This pub was recomended to me by some people I met on the 65 bus from Richmond. The game was being shown on all screens and the place was packed. Brilliant atmosphere during the match and great service eventhough the place was packed. It got better as the evening went on with live music. Am new to area so its great to have a decent traditional pub to go to. Will be back:

Came over to watch the London-Irish V Leinster game last month. This pub was down the road from the Travel Lodge where we stayed. After the game we headed down for the night. Made feel very welcome, very good craic with live music all night. Big selection of beers, Heineken wouldn't go astray though. Very witty barman, Patrick i think. Irish bar through and through, highly recommended!!

been in this pub a good few times, it looks a lot better now than what it used to be. seems its under new management the guy running it seems lovely and friendly and the staff working there are really nice and welcoming. not that I drink the beers or bitters but the wide range of drinks are brilliant and im glad to see they are selling wine by the bottle now the manager has certainly got it right. The decking out the back was a great idea and especially the heater for the smokers. The food there is also really good and reasonable chef seems very friendly. Theres been a lot of improvements thats occured in this pub over the last year.

This pub has become our local for a good few months now. We had been a few times before but the lack of choice of beer was a problem for me as I did get bored with London Pride only. Pleased to say that there are now 3 handpumps and they serve Youngs and another guest. They have started doing food now which is wholesome and not too expensive. The decor has been upgraded, the loos are much better and the deck out the back is great in the summer. It's sad about Brian and Bernie but Francis behind the bar is a real champ with always a smiling face.

Now called O'Riordans (not 100% of the spelling there) Its having som extensive building work done on it at the moment so ony half of the pub is open - last time I went everyone was having to use the ladies!

Great pub, fantastic atmosphere, lovely staff.

they show 3pm Footy games on Saturdays as well, fantastic...
slacker - 10 Oct 2008 12:38
this pub is fantastic for the crack, it has friendly staff and the beer is always top notch. i popped in to have a drink recently as i haven't been back since the take over and i was sad to hear that Rosheen had left, she was like a piece of the furniture and i always thought she'd be there. all sports shown here altho the manager is not too keen on cricket.
theman80 - 15 Aug 2008 17:05
I was surprised to hear that this place used to have a bit of a reputation. We strayed in after seeing a placard heralding the return of Murphy's stout for 1.90, which on a blistering hot afternoon probably wasn't the obvious choice but why not?

An enjoyable experience, the pub was heaving with GAA fans and one old dear who'd had one too many.

I'll be back again.
E1_Norton - 14 Jul 2008 17:21
You may be aware that "Captain Morgans" has been bought out and there is a new owner. Bryan & Bernie are still running it. John the owner has done a great many changes one being the large decked area at the back. There are many more planned.

The name has changed too it is now "O'Riordans" - which is what it was called before.

It is still the best pub in Brentford in my opinion - the friendliness is beyond question. I understand that meals will soon be being served again. Good luck to John the new owner and Bryan & Bernie and of course all the regulars.
GrimsbyJohn - 27 Jun 2008 13:46
There is no way that you could be mistaken about the nationality of this pub with the barman wearing an Ireland top and all of the Irish paraphernalia up on the walls. I spotted three screens, all showing sky sports news and there are signs up advertising Sky and GAA. There was a team off builders there this afternoon putting in new decking around the side and to the rear of the pub. Id imagine it being quite pleasant sitting out there on a hot afternoon overlooking the Thames.

The barman was friendly enough and the choice of beers are Pride (another pump with clip turned), John Smiths Smooth, Tetleys Cream flow, obviously Guinness and a few bog standard lagers.

In my opinion this is a pretty decent pub.
Strongers - 14 May 2008 14:11
This is the nearest pub to us but I would rather walk the extra 5 minutes to The Express. Very Irish, great if you want listen to songs on the jukebox about Bobby Sands and being oppressed etc. Good for a night out though.
ixion - 19 Nov 2007 13:30
popular locals pub (a free house) with warm and cosy atmosphere and frienldy bar staff. good for watching football - big room at the back and big selection of channels.
mozzzzzz - 28 Oct 2007 12:05
I was in this pub when Limerick played Tipp and Dublin played Meath. the atmosphere was fantastic and the barstaff was brilliant. 2 loud passionate Dubs behind the bar. Altho we (Meath) lost that day and the barmaid was smug I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves GAA. Great craic and friendly atmosphere with professional staff.
anonymous - 28 Jun 2007 11:28
Completely unpretentious and down-to-earth neighbourhood pub with friendly staff and locals. Only place I've found in West London with Pink Floyd on the jukebox that no-one minds being played at midnight on a bank-holiday Monday. I'd live here if I was more local.
random_ranger - 17 May 2007 14:59
Went here a while back. Very friendly locals and top Guinness as I remember. Keep meaning to go back but I dont work in the area anymore and live the other side of London, but will certainly head there if in the area again. Recommended.
pdavis500 - 13 Jan 2007 10:26
A favourite of mine for a lunchtime pint. Brian is a top chap who always makes us welcome. Guiness is very good in here as well.
Shame they have no lunchtime food though.

Well worth a visit if your passing !

I'm Irish and I usually avoid "Oirish" pubs in England where at all possible, since the essence of a true Irish pub comes not with bicycles hanging from the ceiling, or fake St. Paddys Day celebrations, or even a decent pint of stout; rather, it comes from the atmosphere and the crowd. And for that, the key is a good Landlord.
In Ireland, you don't get so many chain pubs, with Accountants in charge of poorly paid and motivated staff. Instead, many of the pubs are genuine Freehouses, so that for a publican to succeed, he/she must know what they're doing.
Brian, the guy in charge of Capt.Morgan's, is a "proper" Irish Landlord - knows his customers, keeps his staff right, rolls up his sleeves when it's busy and never forgets a face.
Captain Morgains is a bit out of my way, so I originally only used to pop in for the televised sport, but now I'd happily make a detour to call in for a pint at other times.
EalingBee - 5 Dec 2006 19:36
I remember this fondly from when it was O'Riordan's. And I'm not even Irish!
beeronaut - 11 Oct 2006 12:28
Visit this little pub if you are good humoured, like your slow poured guiness hand delivered to you and want to chat football all night with the brilliant barmaid Roisin.
I hear the Sunday lunches are wicked and they have a cool new jukebox too!
peggy_mitchell - 3 Oct 2006 13:52
the best local very freindly ineed
waza - 1 Oct 2006 10:05
3 of us walked in here after a recent Brentford game and immediately thought 'Oh dear, here we go...' as heads turned, the Irish memorobilia caught our eye and some pretty large rugby fans appeared by the door. Pleasingly first impressions were definitely wrong - the bar staff were very friendly, the chaps at the bar wanted to have a chat about the football, and we invited to take seats by the fire to dry out whilst our Guinness was poured. Great atmosphere in here, only problem is the place is a little bit isolated for crawl purposes.
LondonWolf - 14 Feb 2006 13:11
Really good beer, a good range. The Guiness is excellent, they'll take their time serving it, as it should be, and then deliver it to you (if it's not too busy) And the land lord is a true Gent, very welcoming. I've only been there on a week day lunches but it has always been good, they even have a little sun trap beer garden round the back. And the club sandwich is brilliant value for money and more importantly really tasty.

I don't have a bad word to say about this Pub.
Looks slightly intimidating from the Outside (especially as you can't see in), but amazingly friendly bar staff who always give you a warm welcome.

Food is excellent, with very generous portions and they sell Magners (although everywhere does now).

Top pub.
TheClaw - 27 Jul 2005 12:53
An excellent pub!the closest thing i've come to, to a proper authentic irish bar in london, it reminds me of my local back home in ireland, not pretence just full of great people wanting to have the craic! great service, friendly and attentive and excellent music.
finegcia - 22 Mar 2005 14:28

Random John - 23 Mar 2004 01:12
amazing live trad Irish/folk music night on thursday, apparently, best in London.
Binaca - 24 Feb 2004 13:30
A pub that seems to have escaped the Brentford malaise. An Irish pub that actiually radiates a genuine sense of Irishness. Not bad at all.
Good for: Pint's 3 to 4

Hey, this is Barry O'Riordan, this is a response to Belgrave SQ boy post. My parents sold up and moved to Ireland 3 years ago. They are still in the pub game but just grew tired of London. When they sold O'Riordan Tavern it was the end of an era! I have been to Captains Morgans once but its not the same. Drop me a line on the email below, [email protected]

Jimmeh - 19 Aug 2003 06:07
Great pub, excellent guinness, live Irsh music on a Thursday. A good example of a proper Irish pub not a plastic paddy.
Tim - 28 Jul 2003 13:05
very friendly barstaff who remember your order after 1 visit! can be full of the older generation watching irish sports but good atmosphere & very comfy. tables round back if you want to get outdoors.
millym - 25 Jul 2003 21:14
Captain Morgan is a pretty ok place to be , its a newer addition on this south ealing/brentford road... i must admit i dont go as often as i should..but ive staggered over kew bridge a few times-so it cant be too bad! this used to be called o'riordans tavern...now i think he was my long lost schoolfriend...barry o'riordan or his dads...now a question ...why the hell did they sell up and move...after all, on the same road towards syon park was Mary O riordans....barry if youre out there and you attended a certain private school 1979-1988 in west london...and i say this because i saw you walking towards that pub in school uniform back in 1988!...hi there mate! where have you moved to? (reply to this post!)
