This place is now called Shortt's Bar. It looks as if it's a bit of a local nightspot. But we were maybe a little early for the "best" of the action. Worst pub of the day in terms of ale selection. Tribute was the only choice. So we ended up having shots in order to move on as quickly as possible. Not worth going to.

Enjoyable time spent in the beer garden last night. Lovely and clean place, nice people. Good cider for these hot nights.

I am a lover of pubs as places to drink, in all their variety and splendour. This is not really a cafe and not really a pub. When I visited the other people were drinking coffee, water, coke and lager. I made the sensible choice of having a half pint. There is no point in having a 'good range' of beers if you don't attract enough beer drinkers to keep the beer in good condition. Totally lacking in character and atmosphere.

Have been in twice with the boys since the visit with Mrs Monk, both times for extended sessions in the beer garden at the back to take advantage of the sun. Excellent selection of ales on both occasions and the HPA and I think Maldon Gold went down particularly well on a very hot day. Friendly and helpful staff, interesting looking food menu and the same special as the Basketmakers was about half a pint cheaper! A worthy addition to any crawl of Brighton's best pubs, and indeed we'll be there again on 29 August 8/10

Called in recently, this pub is a new addition to the local CAMRA branch Ale Trail route. A good selection of real ales (5 i recall) and both the Otter Bitter and Skinners Betty Stogs were in good nick. Food was tasty as well - try the falafel burgers.

Visited on Saturday 7 April with Mrs Monk, and I had the Otter which was excellent. First visit to this pub which I gather is another Blue enterprise, great building including good music posters on the ceiling. Interesting looking food menu but didnt partake as we'd been to the Basketmakers earlier, good boozer in a slightly down at heel area. Will visit again for an extended session. 7/10

Now owned by the same people who own the Basketmakers, 8 handpumps with a fairly safe choice of ales Buttcombe ,Harveys ,Otter ,Hopback Summer Lightening, the others escape me at the moment, Iwould have liked to have seen a couple of less usual micros featured but my Harveys was fine.A fairly modern looking interior ,but walls and ceilings adorned with posters of rock and blues stars of yesteryear,Rolling Stones records playing quietly in the background and friendly bar staff made for a pleasant pint.

Now reopened, and what a difference, could not beleve my eyes, the Oak has now been turned into a real ale heaven, eight ales ranging in price from 3 - 3.50.Otter Bitter,Landlord,Summer Lighting,Harveys Best,Betty Stoggs,H S B and London Pride were in great condition,The pub now has a great jazzy feel and i wish the new owners good luck in there venture.

This pub is closed at the moment, not sure if it is going to reopen.

This place is dressed out like a music venue with posters all over the place. London Pride and John Smith's so no great shakes on the ale side of things,T.V's and a pool area. Pretty run of the mill really. Not the sort of place I would travel far to get to, the clientelle and staff are friendly enough though. Hasn't been colonised by the Kemp Town gay fraternity - yet.

music is too loud, staff are a bit too stupid or too cliquey apart from Ray, the ultimate bearded barman!!! All in all a nice pub and great to see they have their own charity and have good events too - fab music there this summer. Proper Kemptown pub in a place where trendy bars are two a penny.

The best pub and hottest staff in Brighton! Ask Shirley for a Tuscan Mule, he won't do you wrong!

Only visited once but I will definatly return. Good pub full of good friendly people and a beautifull little dog.

Great all day round pub - a proper pub in a sea of silly trendy bars. Nice mix of sports chilled and atmosphere (although the music can be a bit too loud to chat over). They have their own registered charity operating in the pub which raises loads of money for local children's causes and provides very good entertainment when the guys get together and organise an event. Their music-fest in may last year was excellent fun!

Know known as The Oak. Early morning regular drinkers. V friendly and reasonably priced. Good simple and reasonably priced food. Recent moderisation by the new young owners. An oasis in St James Street for those looking for a drink and a drink only.
