I popped in during the week, and I can only agree with bigglesworth's second posting, didn't even bother to wait for the only bloke in there to finish playing on his laptop, I reckon that he is pat popov, nobody else would put on a good review.

A good pub! It sells beer, has nice bar staff and regulars, music at weekends, sports on the telly sometimes, bar billiards and a terrace for smokers/sun worshippers.
Since my last posting, this place has gone way downhill, the decoration is tatty, bar staff that don't seem to really care whether they serve you or not, but then the "guvner" is only ever seen playing with his laptop, the place is empty all week, only has a few in at the weekend when there is an overloud tuneless band playing. And now the Harvey's best has gone up to 3.50, way over the top for a run-down, back street pub.

Seduced by a glorious tiled exterior ~ we was wrong. Nice to see bar billiards. But it was indifferent beer in Guinness glasses. This is a live music venue primarily. Cue bored looking staff and nasty interior. I bet it used to be lovely.

"Uninspiring range of beers"? Doom Bar, Summer Lightning, Timothy Taylor Landlord and finally Harveys, uninspiring? Good crowd, bar billards, a pub to enjoy!
Despite refurb this is a pretty ordinary pub with uninspiring range of beers. Trades on its music content which is varied and interesting but attracts expected clientele.
I take it Phil doesn't run the pub anymore? If he did it wouldn't be rated so low.
Only Harveys on when I was in there. This pub resembles what people expect Irish pubs to be, shambolic and full of characters (including an unnerving Ozzy Osbourne lookalike). The folk music session reinforced the impression.

great pub great beer, enough said

This pub looks better on the outside than the inside. It's a bit gloomy but the staff and locals seem friendly enough. The beer I had was indifferent, but I suspect it was the particular beer that was the problem, not the way it was kept. Will try it again some time and maybe the list of beers on the blackboard outside will correspond with what is actually on!

Called on the ale trail and enjoyed a couple of beers. No problem with staff or locals - friendly enough. Didn't make me gloomy but I was near the end of 17 pubs in a day!
This pub is great, they serve beer, beer is great, it gets you drunk. I like being drunk, do you like being drunk? If you do then visit the Horse and Groom, they serve beer........Honestly!!!!
not sure why all the negative comments but I think its a great pub.
Pluss all the staff are fit!

Why bother coming here, when there are much much better pubs practically next door? The Horse & Gloom is probably only recommended if the other nearby pubs are too young and trendy for you and you'd prefer a miserable, dark place instead. Mind you, I've always had a good pint when I have ventured in there.
No wonder they call it the doom and gloom! after about half an hour in there I felt like severing my own head, what a bloody depressing place.
Nice to have a proper pub in this all too trendy student orientated part of brighton, can get quite intense in there tho! It's actually Nicknamed the "Doom and Gloom" or the "Severed'Ed"

A long since departed landlord owed money to some London Gansters.. he thought he'd be safe away from the smoke until one day..a plastic bag, with his mates head in was left on the bar. The pub was knick-named the Horse & Gloom after. People tend to get legless there these days.
