a pub that has been in the doldrums for years as the frog and rad ,ship and billet now the duchess .a pub in its heyday was heaving but that was many years ago.we only go in there first thing sat morning 11.30 ish a quick half then gone would love to know what its like in the evening although i suspect i could guess .keep your money in your pocket and walk on to the pelton arms

Now called The Duchess. Went in there last week with some mates on a crawl. Looked clean enough - if a little souless - and has got a pool table, if you like that sort of thing.

Did the job well enough, but there are better pubs in the area (such as the Pelton).

Now undergoing a transformation to something called the Duchess Bar.

Another under-patronised old working-class Gin Palace in a road that's full of them (William IV, Angerstein, Antigallican, and more) No real beer. Customers seemed to be basically mildy pissed Scotsmen watching the footy.

On the other hand, when someone said something outrageously silly at the bar and I made a comment, I was included in the conversation pretty easily and three pints and couple of cigs later we were getting on like a house on fire. So my brief visit was quite sociable. And the barmaid looked very cuddly.

i have been using this pub since dave and jan took over in september 2005,they have worked really hard to turn this pub around, and have succeded, it has excellent friendly bar staff, a good cellar, friendly atmosphere, and is an all round family pub, the locals are a bit rough around the edges, but friendly and welcoming, ( me included !),there is entertainment every weekend, karaoke friday and sunday evenings with dave the rave ( you will love him what a voice !!!) and saturdays is usually a disco or live singer, special occasions such as st georges day, marathon day, and of course christmas are all celebrated usually with free food and entertainment laid on,in my opinion one of the best pubs in s.e.london, dont take my word for it , pop in and give it a try, well done dave and jan for giving us a proper london pub back.

Stumbled in by chance with Big Al last Saturday. Run of the mill south London boozer. Locals ok, beer ok, TV ok (though England would go onto lose to Wales in the Six Nations).

This type of pub is sadly becoming something of a rarity throughout London as the style free "Style bars" continue their remorseless through the captial. It's a shame as places like these are a real locals pub and offer a charm, albeit a rough charm that the souless bars that the mindless fashionista inhabits could never understand.

A mention must be made of the toilets though. Was expecting a cross between a sewage plant ind the everglades. But. Hats off to this pub they were so clean and tidy (a rarity in South London) and even had doors that hadn't been kicked in and had locks. Amazing!

Looks like it's going to be re-renamed "The Ship & Billet" - for those with long memories...

I used to drink in there back in the early 90's. Doesn't sound like it's changed then. It was a villains pub. Hope it does improve after the refurbishment. Christine (a friends sister) used to be a barmaid there back in the early 90's, and a great laugh she was to :)

CLOSED - being done up into something rather posh, apparently.

Drank here regularly for a few years, not the pub to take your missus to, to show her a good time. Dirty floors and pint glasses with even grimmer toilets. Locals ok, but bar staff generally obnoxious.

Never had any problems here (although its been a while). Not a great deal going for the place but it has a pool table

Popped in there for a quick pint while waiting to go to the cinema. Darryl's comment sums the place up perfectly. Grotty little place full of fat middle age skinheads just waiting for you to make eye contact. Bar staff are awful too, he was stood playing the fruit machine while we were waiting at the bar - putting in fresh money even though he knew we were waiting. DO NOT GO THERE.

Has two small bars, if I'm not mistaking it with the Old friends Pub next door. The smaller of the two bars has a nice pre-1st World War waiting area feel about it, or a kind of beginners bar. I kept expecting to be invited into the other bar once I'd passed the "test". Looks big from the outside, in a reversed Tardis kind of way. A small Pub divided down the middle into two very small bars. I imagine desinged in the days when men and women drank seperately. ( 14.AD )

Darryl must have gone in on an off night, I have always had a friendy welcome from staff and customers. It may need a lick of paint but the atmosphere makes up for that.

Grotty, and with the constant threat of violence. Just don't even bother.
Darryl - 20 Jun 2003 00:36
Never been in there but love the sign Its a Kermit type frog sitting on an old style school radiator. Made me laugh any way
