Birthplace of the legendary "Roofdogs", a blue plaque is rumoured to be going up soon. Another point in its favour: got rid of Fosters.

I have just had the misfortune to visit the Jolly Crofters at Horwich. It's a pub I have been to in the past and never had a bad meal. How things have changed.

We arrived at 1.50pm today (10/10) and ordered 2 starters at 13.56pm, according to the slip. The starter arrived at 2.25pm and was of very poor quality and small portions. This wasn't loooking good.

At 2.51pm the waitress arrived at our table, not with any food, but an apology, the cheese & onion pie I ordered as one main course nearly an hour ago had now sold out!

She told me she had only started her shift at 2pm so didn't really know what was going on, however the more mature lady who took the order stayed well away.

I decided enough was enough was enough and left the restaurant paying for the drinks I had purchased.

This was not the only problem, I witnessed three other people complaining about the food and service. One couple watched a table of three arrive, get fed and leave before they had even received their food.

This used to be a pub reknowned for good food and service. What a shame it's ended up like this.

Stay well away.

It's beautiful on the outside, and really warm and comfortable looking on the inside, like a traditional country pub. Sadly, the food was pricy and really quite poor :(

Went to the 'Crofters on saturday 17 April, it was very quiet , this should have told us something, one time you could hardly get a seat, I got the drinks and viewed the menu I fancied trad' chips and fish but it was crossed off, so I ordered the lamb shank with mash , my wife had vegi lasagne , whilst waiting for our food to arrive we overheard someone say that the lamb was tough , though the beer was delish' I agreed with the other customer about the lamb, it was tough and I think it died of starvation with amount of meat on the bone , my wife couln't believe the lack of filling in her lasagne,.. Be a long time before I go there again !!!

With regards to the last review, the Blundell is now owned by a similar group to the Crofters, so I bet you dont get much better service up there. We visit either one of these pubs over the weekend for a quiet drink, and they are typical of the british pub today, rubbish, however saying that I would say that the Blundell has a bigger staff turnaround and to be honest I have never had anybody n the crofters serve me in track suit bottoms!

Taken over by Trendy Pubco -Orchid Group-who's website is full of buzzwords and 'Licensed Retail Newspeak',but in reality it is just another crap Managed Pub.Bank Holiday Monday,Blundell Arms 'packed to the rafters',very few customers in The Crofters,,no wine list, crossings out on the menus, poorly trained staff, small portions,no visible signs of management-unless it was the scruffy pair in 'tracky bottoms' and 'T' shirts, stops serving food at 8:30 but takes the menus off the tables at quarter past, refused two customers at 8:20 who came in for food -they went up to The Blundell-along with everyone else.

NOT A GOOD START WHEN WE ORDERED OUR WINE FROM THE WINE LIST, WE ORDERED PROSECCO AND WE WERE INFORMED THAT THEY HAD NONE OF THE SPARKLING WINE OR CHAMPAGNE THAT WAS ON THE LIST.
WE ORDERED PINO GRIGIO INSTEAD WHICH WAS LOVELY BUT WE WERE OFFERED NO ICE BUCKET OR WINE COOLER TO PUT IT IN.
I ORDERED LAMB SHANK WHICH WAS ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS, FALLING OFF THE BONE! HOWEVER WE ALSO ORDERED SLOW ROASTED PORK BELLY WHICH SOUNDED LOVELY AND WOULD HAVE BEEN IF IT HAD IN FACT BEEN SLOWLY ROASTED. IT WAS AS TOUGH AS OLD BOOTS AND HAD PROBABLY BEEN PUT IN THE OVEN WHEN WE ORDERED IT. VERY DISAPPOINTING, SHOULD HAVE STUCK TO THE COD AND CHIPS WHICH IS ALWAYS GOOD.

Used to be a great home cooked food pub serving home baked pies and freshly cooked chicken curry to die for BUT since changing hands several times is serving MICRO WAVED pies YUK!!!!!!
One saving grace is that the fish and chips are still good

Good place to go for quick meal. O K, not for your Michelin five star brigade, but neither are the prices. Choice of bitters, varied menu, clean, efficient staff, what more do you want?

People rave about the food here, I had Cumberland sausage and mash, nice sausages but the mash was powdered instant potatoes.(5.75)
I won't be ordering that again!

Good beer and excellent fish and chips. Avoid at dinner time and early evening, unless your over 65 and accompanied by both parents.

Great beer, corporate food looked fine but wasn't sampled. Cooking smells from deep fat fryer unfortunately pervade the entire building.

Great little warm friendly pub. Food your average pub grub, although the crushed baby new potatoes with bacon and melted cheese is fab. Could do with having an area where children are not allowed, having them running around when trying to have a quiet drink is more than annoying.
