Now the Bank Top Ale House with 9 cask ales available on my visit.

Great if you like a pub full of dogs (and I do mean the four legged kind). Counted 9 in the pub on my last visit. Just what I love is being sat in a pub listening to someone's mutt bark its bollocks off, especially when the staff fail to act. Seems little point in removing the jukebox to keep out the yob element then letting a different kind of yob in who lets their animal growl and bark with a complete disregard for other customers.

Top ale but turn the heating down!
Looking forward to giving the Ale House a try.
Just reopened 6/12/2013 now called the "Ale House"! and it is just that, nothing fancy just good real ale, 10 of them at the last count, should give V & A a run for the money winning CAMRA pub of the year again!
Looking forward to some Top Cow.
The word on the street is that Bank Top Brewery have bought the place, if the old Carters Arms on Belmont Road is anything to go by, it should go down a treat.
Here's hoping.

While I have been critical of the new landlady in the past I'm of the opinion if she can't turn this pub around then its time to pull it down. Good luck Christine, I wish you every success
Finally, somebody who knows how to run a pub is in charge!
I understand that the pub has now re-opened.
Hope youre satisfied BoltonBloke.
Currently shut and awaiting a new landord

Losing customers faster than tories losing votes? Throw this back at me if you must, im only human. Im not being funny but if you can come out with a comment like that youre one to talk about losing customers. How can people expect this pub to carry on when you're all criticising the place and making it look like total crap? I'd love to see you try and run a pub from scratch, see how youd feel about losing customers. 6months of the cow boltonbloke? 22 september 2011? Go check the date of my comment and weep at your incorrect guess. In the 3 years ive been in this pub, ive never had one night where i havent gone home without a smile on my face. When i started a job as a barmaid 3 years ago, every single local id met in the pub was brilliant, friendly and always up for a laugh. None of this 'trailor trash' you speak of. Okay, so Pauls losing some of his regular locals but its clearly their loss. At least hes making the effort of Live entertainment, pool nights, poker nights etc. Pubs never cold as when ive been in, the fires always been blazing away. No bottles? Always been a disant selection when ive been in.
This wasnt meant to be a dig to anyone, but simply to get my point across.
Not once have i seen anything wrong with this pub ever. Ill always stand by this place cause it led me to some of the most amazing people ill ever meet. Best of luck to Paul and Kelly cause to be honest, i think theyre doing pretty well.

Losing customers faster than the Tories are losing votes!

Oh Dear!!! what a differnce a year makes!! Dark, dismal, dingy, dirty & dry !! -no beer, no bottles - no chance.
When I've been in, there is always no 'something or other' be it beer, bottles, wine or spirits. There is no chance of a group of people all getting the drink of their choice. Never any ice & usually no crisps or snacks. Don't know what's gone wrong but landlord definately appears to have lost interested. Still seems to have some regulars but surely they can't hang on much longer!
I think Paul and Kelly must be trying to restart the Temperence movement as very time I've been in recently the optics have been empty and so are the fridges, more often than not they are also out of lager. Why he would still rather pay staff than work himself is a mystery as he clearly can't afford to buy new stock.

Ive been working in the States for the last 2yrs and looked forward to revisting one of my old haunts. Sadly I was dissapointed to see that the previous landlady was no longer there and now in her place I was greated by some trailor trash and their minions. So called landlord spent more time on the gambler and chatting to his friends than running the pub, such a shame to see such a nice little cosy pub on the decline. My husband is a real ale fan and likes to try different ales but sadly the bitter was awful, for him to leave a pint is not normal. I think we'll be giving this one a miss and in future will be taking our custom down the road to Sam's bar.
Not the best pub in Horwich but it's ok.
To be fair, even if I don't go that often the beer has been fine when I do, and it is proper real ale. Best pub? Probably not, but if you're into pool, reasonable real ale and an older clientele it's definitely worth a look.
Yeah, thanks for that Kelly .You used the same user name when you were involved with the Bowling green.
Being a part of the Horwich and Blackrod Pub and Club Watch Commitee i can guarantee that nobody who frequents this Public House has ever been on the Pubwatch list. Good Luck to Paul and Kelly for the future at the Brown Cow
The best pub in Horwich? Its not even the best pub at the top of Church street facing Parish church! Beer is variable at best, landord never serves prefering to employ a gangsters moll, most of the new customers are on pubwatch. I give it six months.
This is now the best pub in Horwich. Paul and Kelly have brought an entirely new dimension to the pub, new people, new ideas and a fantstic atmosphere.
Absolutlely brilliant- do not miss out, give it a visit, especially free food Friday.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Friday and Saturday nights its full of other peoples husbands with other peoples wifes. I don't know why they don't just have a large glass bowl near the door for everyone to chuck their car keys in and be done with it!
I hear they had a visit from the police last night, let's hope they take note
Seems to be suffering the same way as many Horwich pubs at the moment by being over-run with yobs at the weekend who know they can get a late drink. The front window has been boarded up for over a week now and lends a certain an air of class to the place. Every picture tells a story as they say..........
AKA,'The Merry Widow's' These days makes it's money from serving after time.
Full of has-beens and yesteryears heros.
Always good for a few pints and always soemone in to interact with, but definately on the decline.
Absolutely no frills drinking mans den. Sport on the telly whenever and wherever, reasonble pint of JW Lees. What you see is definitely what you get!
Freezing cold and scruffy, short of a good clean.
Good bovine pub!.
Wizzard has it bang on. The decor is ok, but the locals are very local..
A local pub for local people.
I went in last Saturday, no light in gent's toilet, lock on door broken. Holding the door shut with your foot whilst sitting in the dark is not my idea of convenience. Standards are slipping.
A good pub, but too far uphill for my liking.
