Clearly not a place that specialises in real ales, but two on - and good attentive service. Nice looking menu too. Worth a visit lunchtimes, but probably a bit rough at night.

Great Bar - Stays open late at Fridays and Weekends.

To cap off a brilliant Easter weather wise, I came with a mate Easter Monday as we went searching for a pub close to Woking station where we could drink outside in glorious sunshine. The relatively small seating area in Yatess opposite appeared to be more in the shade around 3pm, so we opted for ONeills where we could sit down in the sun on one of the outside tables. I was served quickly and a pint of Stella and a pear Kopparberg served in plastic cups - came to 6.20, so make what you want from that if anything about the prices of drinks in here.
While it was not that busy outside, there were, however, a group of rowdy drunks undermining the relative tranquillity of the seating area on one of the other tables.
In spite of the above, I would certainly come here again if in this part of Woking and I wanted to drink outside if the sun is shining.

Directly opposite Yates's, this site has been used as a pub for years. I have seen it as the Red House (hence the old Woking expression "you couldn't score in the Red House") the Farenheit and Firkin (where my marrage proposal was accepted, needless to say we're no longer together...) and now O'Neill's, more happily always firmly in my memory as the pub in which I watched Chelsea's first top level league title won in my lifetime, in 2005 (tears were shed).
Despite all my hisory in this pub, yesterday was my first visit for a couple of years as Wetherspoons just around the corner, beats O'Neill's for price and range of drinks - O'Neill's range is limited to the Guinness family (Guinness Red 2.75 a pint) Smethicks and the usual keg line up. I noticed Peroni on tap, a lager that is becoming increasingly widely avaliable, as landlords and managers become aware that it's a bit of a licence of print money, mug punters seeming willing to pay 3.70 plus for it.
Food, as usual in these chain pubs, is important and popular. The menu seems pretty decent and cheap pub grub and was flying out of the kitchen. The food was proving so popular that new people ordering were being advised of a twenty minute wait (which makes a change from just being left watitng in ignorance).
Decor-wise there's lots of dark wood pannelling and faux Irish b*llocks around the walls. GAA games on TV and live music is advertised. A pretty standard town centre pub with nothing making it stand out.

Service with a smile would be a little more nice.

Soso. Gets a bit 2 easy at times.

Not the best atmosphere. Bit rough. Does Guinness Red

I am generally a fan of O'Neills. This one however is not so good. I've never really enjoyed coming here and have tried to put my finger on why...
1) Just never found the people here friendly, the staff and the customers in general.
2) Its often too crowded with people hogging around the bar area. This isnt required, they don't even move out of the way.
3) The music they do here is boring. They have done cover songs, it lacks inspiration.
To be honest its just not a place I like to go.
|
Not a bad venue for a late night drink. Can get a little over-crowded mind you.
|
Love this pub. Kate was a good landlady, but Elaine is just as good - she rocks. Speaking of which, love the live music down there - it does vary, but it's mostly rock covers and it's good when bands like "Rhedd" are down there cos they do something for everyone from pop to rock and do it brilliantly - really loud and passionately. "From The Ashes" are another good band down there, rock covers and modern stuff like Arctics, Foo Fighters, Muse is best by "Juice" - they always have quality bands. Food is good value and fairly quick, quite a few of the bar staff (hello Wilkey) are incredibly friendly and it's one of the only places in Woking where you can keep the chav scum troublemakers out, thanks to the lovely bouncers. Not that sport is my thing really, but it's great for sport too with big screens. live bands are usually 10.30-1am, so it doesn't interfere with the sports. I wouldn't go out in Woking anywhere else!

Travel may broaden the mind but Im not sure if making a short trip from Guildford to Woking falls under this dictum? I came here last Friday night (25 Jan) to meet up with a H-File victim just before midnight. The atmosphere seemed relaxed when I entered and the crowd was mainly of blokes in the 20-30 age group. Given I had abandoned my (usually successful) H-File search in Guildfords Time nightclub to drive here, I was treated to a coke, so cant comment on the prices of the drinks.
To be honest the place seemed quite bland even if it was closing soon I think. If in Woking again on a Friday night, I might start here but cant see myself staying for a good few hours like my female friend did. Besides, the toilets upstairs had a pungent smell of pi** which evoked miserable memories of ONeils in Blackheath Village where the toilets were similarly shocking. I wont be returning in a hurry

I used to always meet my friend in here for a quiet drink. I like it enough. It is probably my pub of choice in Woking, the next being the Station, as they are slightly quieter and chilled. The service I have always found to be good. When it has taken a while I am still always acknowledged and they tend to serve people in the right order...
Not so great when the football is on but then thats my problem as a lot of people come to watch matches in there. If you dont like football avoid matches as there is no quiet area.
|
Not always really the most friendly of people in here. Of course i accept you can get that anywhere, but it is off-putting

This pub has experienced a few changes over the last few years what with a new landlady and a bit of a refurb. Went here the other night and had a decent night, the band (Red Rocket) were good as always. Two main issues with this pub at the moment are the time it takes to get served and the bouncers constantly walking throughout the busiest parts of the pub, pushing their way through, knocking over drinks etc, for no apparent reason. The time it takes to get served is due to how busy it gets and how few staff they seem to have for these busy times. The staff they DO have are very good however. And I understand the bouncers have a job to do, but is it really necessary to patrol the same small area once every 3 minutes? At one point I felt like buying the guy a drink and offering him a seat as he felt just as much part of the group as the other faces I was seeing (my friends).
|
Good pub and atmosphere, but when it comes to football matches is a bit of a JOKE!
One of the only Irish pubs who do not show Celtic games.
They also won't publicise which matches they will be showing (especially Champions League) until an hour before kick off.
|
A word about the music. Appears to be only happening on Fridays now
|
Not very original, but that's not always a bad thing. Do they always have rock covers bands or does it vary?

Great pub, good atmosphere. Went there Saturday for a few birthday drinks and to enjoy the live band having had good nights out there previously. However the evening was totally ruined by the interfering, heavy-handed, numbskull bouncers. It would appear that having a few beers, getting merry with your friends & enjoying the music is a crime. One of the group was asked to leave - no reason given?? We assumed he had the wrong person but he continued to hassle us for the rest of the night & eventually demanded this guy leave & see the police outside. There was one lone police officer standing there, who was as equally perplexed as to why he was there as were we. Avoid at all costs.
|
This is one pub always worth a visit the live music is great and the staff are friendly, and the fact that they bar the trouble makers makes it all the more pleasant
|
The pub quiz on a Thursday takes place at 7.30pm
|
Great pub with good friendly staff. We ate in there after work, they were quite busy, and so I was very impressed with the speed and quality of service.
The food was better than what most pubs serve. The barman even came round later to check our food was ok, and if we wanted any more drinks, which we did, and he happily went back to the bar to get us more drinks and walked back to us with the change, on more than one occasion.
It seems its just been refurbished, and I must say it does look quite grand, and there is a very comfortable non-smoking section.
In the end we ended up staying to listen to the live music, which was superb. Seems to attract the more mature pub goers, which I wholeheartly think is a good thing. We will be visiting again very soon!
|
Music nights are rather entertaining here. Happening most Friday and Saturday nights.
The drinks range does not have any ale. But the Guinness and Amstel beers here taste more than adequate, so definitely one of the better pubs in Woking!
|
Well, i would agree the atmosphere isnt as good as it once was. But i havent tried it enough to tell if its always a bit grim.
Still its an alright place to go, the guinness is as good as it is as most pubs
|
This pub used to be great when that cool dude jono bloke wasnt barred! Bring the great man back otherwise i will never venture in this pub again and i am the great scum!
|
Atmosphere . . what atmosphere? certainly gone to the pack.wheres the irish lass . . . kate? bring her back . .. quickly.

Like a lot of people have stated, used to have a great atmosphere here but it seems to have slowly gone stale. Fine if you want a quiet drink during the week but not if you want a good time at weekends.
|
I'm affraid it just doesn't cut it now everyone has a late license, it used to be okay when all the other pubs kicked out at 11.30 because there was basically no where else to go! If you feel like being sick in the corner of a crowed, dingey pub go here.
|
wot's happened? been away abroad with work a couple of months and recently went back last Thurs. to my favourite haunt in Woking (O'Neill's) for a long overdue pint only to find it now totally devoid of atmosphere and gone to the dogs, expect I will give it another go just so my judgement is not based on the one visit, shame though 'cos this was a good watering hole, wot's happened?

anonymous - 8 Sep 2005 21:16 |
watched this pub get better and better by the week but sad news if the rumour is true that Kate the luvverly landlady is about to leave Woking for pastures new in O'Neill's-Shepherds Bush, life goes on but it won't be the same, (Betty Swollocks)
|
Great Pub, had some really good nights. Miss Aussie Chris not being behind the bar, but Wilki makes up for him. Message for Kate (the Land-lady), please bring back the Irish music, it provided a nice change to the pop rock covers bands. After all, it is supposed to be an Irish themed bar. Where else could we expect Irish music in Woking!!!
|
This was such a nice pub, with the lovely fake irish parafinalia you tend to find in such places, giving it a nice character and taking your mind off the prices. But no more...they have removed the lot to leave it looking more and more like a souless bar. Perhaps i was the only person who liked it.

after an exhausting evening calling on three elderly spinsters of my parish this St.Patricks Day I decided on a quick spot of libation prior to evening prayer and chanced upon O'Neill's Woking (a local tavern dedicated to the hedonistic pleasure of the "craic") they were in full choral voice namely a reworked version of Thomas Tallis's fine hymn "Bohemian Rhapsody", a young combo were entertaining the congregation at the far end and sounded in good voice, .......attractive staff efficiently dispensed copious amounts of Guinness and other beers et al even though the bar was four deep in cusomers. I found a comfortable sheltered spot under the ample bosoms of an attractive lady who was dancing on the table beside me and quietly pondered on my calling as a man of the cloth, to hell with it I thought and jumped up with her, great night, great time, even got a snog!) thumbs up and thanks, The Rev. Armitage-Shanks

Nice atmosphere, plenty of TV screens and good food reasonably priced.
|
This seems like a decent Irish pub. Can get quite busy though. Its quite nicely decorated, especially the balloons. Though im not sure why they would put balloons up in a pub!?
|
*the pikeys, not the bouncers.

in my opinion the best pub nosh around, (recommend the 12"Boner sausage and mash a specialality of the chef Ricardo Bonere), good selection of beer and very friendly bar staff,
anonymous - 23 Oct 2004 22:15 |
friendly sort of place, made even a newcomer like me feel like a regular, was on first name terms with Kate the manager in less than ten minutes, had a pub lunch with food cooked by their in house chef Ricardo Bonere, A1 for taste and presentation(Woking's gain is Paris's loss!)came back on Friday night to catch the live band, squeezed into a corner and watched the whole of Woking at play......great atmosphere! well worth a visit and to quote my ol' mate Arnie " I'll be b..."
|
oneils is definatly a good pub because it's not seen as 'trendy'. by this i mean it has bouncers who actually check ID, plays decent music by bands like Oasis, Kings of Leon, REM, Hendrix etc the chavs in woking stay away because they like to think the music you find in clubs should be played everywhere. on fridays there are live bands playing who are actually quite good, on sundays there is an open mike session too so very good all round.

To barman Dan.. O'Neill's have not belonged to 6-continents for a long time..If you think there is not much night life, you must be in the wrong bar. O'Neill's is one of the best if not the BEST in town. give it a try again with an open mind, and see what the rest of us see.
Kate - 1 Oct 2004 01:26 |
I think o'neills in woking is one of the best pubs in surrey. it always has a good atmosphere and u are always made to feel welcome!! The bands on a friday are great!! The barstaff are some of the best around, especially wilki and i dont think u will find many better lookin than liam, he is well fit!
anonymous - 29 Sep 2004 01:08 |
Oneils in Woking is one of the best pubs in a town mostly populated with chav pubs where the usual drinkers are clad in burberry whereas Oniels gives a welcome respite from these chav fools. A great selection of beers from around the world and classy food when the cook can be bothered. Also has the finest punters in the world who include Paul"the massive numpty" Gunning and Osh"fantastic"Rice.

Fantastic Pub great live music and friendly staff, especially the tall gorgeous barman, think his names Paul, worth going in just to see him!
Kate King-Spooner - 1 Sep 2004 17:16 |
And overated overpriced hang out for 30+ men who like uncomfortable wooden chairs-- when u can actually find 1!! not the worst in Woking but pretty grim.
|
This pub is the Mutts nuts, Friendly, Lively and does Irish Beer! Also Rachel the Barmaid is the sweetest person you'll ever meet!
Colin - 23 Apr 2004 13:41 |
It is a pretty cool place to go, heavy on the good times, light on the chav scum!
posh - 7 Apr 2004 18:11 |
i have been going in here regularly since i moved to woking and always have a great time, greeted with friendly doorstaff, bar staff and management. Friday nights are great with the live music. This has gotta be one of the best places to be.

check out the band "RedRocket" this friday 1st Aug for a great night out.

Live music on a Friday, great atmosphere and good selection on tap. It's got a late license Thursday Friday Saturday as well.
Fletch - 9 Jun 2003 20:55 |
it's a nice enough bar, food's excellent, but not much for a night life in there. somewhere from regulars to go i'd say. (plus 6-continents couldn't manage to open a door, let alone a chain of bars!)
