The Railway now has a new temperature controlled cellar. ALL beers, lagers, and ciders are A1 :)
I can't speak for the beer bit the cider is as good as ever and only £2.30/pt
Live nearby. Love the location/handiness/ people etc. But the beer has got worse and worse. Undrinkable. 'People can always go somewhere else if they don't like it' will come back to haunt them, as The Bird In Hand at Westhay has now reopened after a refit and is serving an excellently kept pint of Real Ale. (Only one on at the moment, as newly opened, and landlord is ' testing the water').
With both the Countryman at Meare and the Bird at Westhay closed, this house is the only survivor nearby.
It must also be the cheapest at £2.10/pt for Wilkins cider.
Opening hours - 4:30 - 11:00 Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri. 12:00 - 11:00 Wed, Sat, sun.

Sounds much as it was when I last looked in: basic, but a valuable find in the area.
The beer was fine on the occasions I was there.
Like the atmos - real time-warp place. No food, only a basket of proper home made rolls, scotch eggs etc,on the end of the bar, proper pub fare! Dogs not allowed in (shame), kids are (greater shame). Real Ale quality better than a few years ago, but still hit and miss - when it's bad, it's BAD, which is a shame

Popped in having been walking in nearby wheelchair accessible Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve with dogs and friends. Pint of Cotleigh Honey Buzzard beer was tired and past it's best, but it was a hot day. Reception for locals noticeably warmer than for visitors like myself, but hey, some pubs in Somerset are like that.
A warm and very friendly pub with real fires and real cider. And they let us camp in their field for free!!!!! And I seem to remember the opening hours were generous too!
Pub apparently in the middle of nowhere although beautiful nature reserves nearby. Very thirsty after some birdwatching and had nice pint of Worthingtons. Gents are outdoors and are horrible. Generations of cobwebs on the walls
Open 16:30 - midnight Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri. 12:00 - midnight Wed, Sat & Sun. This pub is officially not in Meare but in neighbouring Ashcott.
The place has been smartened up and is now open all afternoon on Sats. Well-kept Wilkins cider, and Taunton Natch. Sitting in the garsen was veruy pleasant this afternoon. Nice cheese or ham (thick slices off a real ham) rolls. The right-wing propaganda on display was the only fly in the ointment. The cycle path from here to Glastonbury has been much improved and is now a smooth ride with a normal bike.
Worth a visit if you like real cider - they have Roger Wilkins' local product.
I live nearby. I don't go there. Say no more.
I've had the beer in the summer and it's like tar. There's nothing here worth a second visit, sadly.
yes definitely eccentric all round...including 'We dont keep ale during summer it doesn't keep'. Timewarp place ok, but dear me they cant make any money... Feels like a tin-shed in someone's back garden. handy for bird-spotters.....if they drink warm cola that is....
Basic local pub tucked away down a lane 1.5 miles from the village, at the site of the old railway station and canal wharf (rail/canal enthusiasts may like the old photos on display). Opening hours are a bit eccentric. Real cider.
