7 real ales were on offer last night. I had a superb pint of Rebellion IPA but there was a real ale for every taste. Sat in the garden and enjoyed the sunset at this hidden rural gem. A deserved winner of Herts CAMRA gold awards. My favourite boozer in the county.

The Woodman is thriving, 4 casks on and several fizz. Monday afternoon was busy. Fair prices and lots of locals plus day trippers. Simples. but works.

Tried the Buntingford Polar Star on Saturday and it was lovely. Normally seem to have a good range of beers in here.

Was just trying to recall how many beers they actually have on here, I think it's Abbot, IPA, then four guest real ales, but I think on occasions there have been more. I have never seen such an atmosphere of anticipation as one real ale went off, another was put on, connected up and sampled. The atmosphere was almost electric as the beer clip was attached and everyone had the opportunity to sample one ale more than there were hand pumps! Rarely see the same ale in there for very long, although Abbott Reserve has been on since before xmas and is justified in this long performance :)
To please the non-real ale drinkers there are three lagers, guinness and a cider on tap, plus the usual selection of wines. There is a lunchtime food service and the woodman closes in the afternoons as per old licensing hours.
Another village to aspire to live in!!

I searched out the Woodman on the net prior to travelling down from the Midlands...glad I did. I had read somewhere the words "Cracking Little Boozer" and it sure was. Three pints all in excellent condition, started off with Buntingford "June" floral and hoppy, very refreshing on a warm evening, then Crouch Vale "Yakima Gold" again excellent, nice head, slightly off white with a nice hoppy-citrussy kick and finished off with Adnams "Broadside" super condition, malty toffee flavours with a head that followed the beer all the way down the glass. Friendly locals, knowledgable staff and a great environment..I hope I get asked to go down South on business again as I will definitely add this to my list of favourites, and congrats to all concerned on winning South Herts Pub of the Year.

I see the Woodman has just been voted CAMRA Hertfordshire pub of the year so well done. Certainly an excellent pub with excellent beer. I will be paying this weekend's beer festival at the pub a visit.

A real Gem Great Ale always changing good pub grub a real Village Local bet its not changed for decades!

A pleasant little out of the way pub with a decent selection of beers. Another awkward place to access if you aren't in a car. It's probably a good 2 mile walk to the nearest (infrequent and not on Sundays or evenings) bus service.

Brilliant local pub, excellent selection of real ales, with three constantly changing guest ales. Both food and drinks are great value for money and the beer garden is always well kept. I will be back!

This pub is basically a knockout. Friendly welcome, good range of guest beers (they had a few very good porters in recently), a good beer garden and pickled eggs if you get hungry. Real character and clearly loved by those who frequent it. It is out of the way but that means around 6 quid in a cab from Welham Green station so there's no excuse really. Would stand comparison with the best pubs nationwide.

Meant to have tried this pub about five years ago - finally got round to it last week. Very busy Saturday lunch time, mainly with the real-ale crowd. Quite small inside but managed to find a table. Landlord and his staff very friendly and welcoming. Can't complain about the amount of beers on offer. The regular brews of Greene King and Mac's are not my choice but there are at least three guest ales (that's me sorted). Food wise, there is a small selection of basic dishes (no fancy names or sauces here) and all under a fiver (that's the family sorted). Our meals were well cooked, tasty and good value. Only two minor moans; the interior could do with a clean and lick of paint and (this is one of my usual gripes) the food would have been better served on at least a warm plate - not cold. I shall return.

Had a good welcome here last week , and a couple of lovely pints of Betty Stoggs. Food is simple and affordable. Some Greene King beers plus good guest Ales on. I wish it was my local.
|
Nice pub with decent range of beers. A bit suprised there was no real cider (it looks like the sort of place that should sell it). Well worth the effort to find it.
|
Lovely pub with very friendly staff and good drink - The Abbot Reserve I tryed was exceptional!
|
Fantastic discovery this. Popped in during the week and some CAMRA presentation for Pub of the Year (runner-up) going on. Excellent pub with reasonable prices no wonder CAMRA like it. Friendly staff - will be back.
|
Excellent, friendly country pub that does everything right.Superb beer - really liked the York Centurian's Ghost.Food good and reasonably priced. Well reccommended.Just one complaint: wish the landlord would tell some of his locals to stop swearing loudly at the bar.
|
A really splendid unspoilt proper country pub in a part of Hertfordshire not spoilt for choice. The seating on the bank outside is delightful in summer. Disagree with Anonymous's comments below. Have never in many years found the place at all unwelcoming. McMullens beer & usually 2 changing guest ales immaculately kept. NB tends to stick to traditional opening times.

Its speciality is real ale, and the atmosphere is great too. Some basic food is available at lunchtimes. Last night the South Herts CAMRA branch awarded the Woodman as Pub Of The Year 2007. So it's pretty good!

A proper pub.

Excellent, small, friendly country pub, not Harverstered, not had a Huge Dining Extension added. Good beers (three or four) well kept, good plain garden outside. Feels really quite isolated.
