Been here twice this week to watch football and must agree with recent comments about what a fine pub this place is.
Passes the litmus test of three ales on tap and coat hooks under the bar. Good selection of premium lager: Staropramen and Kozel both go down very well. The Peroni tastes like it should, which is becoming a bit of a rarity in London boozers these days where the trend seems to be to water it down.
Always a warm, bubbly atmosphere and it seems to be an oasis of sense from the skinny-jeaned foppery in the surrounding area.
Appreciate Dylarolla's comment about TV sport. On Sunday there were plenty in to watch the ManYoo v Chelski match and they pulled out the projector screen. Last night only a couple watching ManYoo v Sunderland and they left it on the smaller flat screen and had music playing, which didn't affect the atmosphere or the football.
Bar staff friendly, and smiled when they served you. I wish I could call this place my local.

Have been popping in here for a couple of day time pints reasonably regularly of late. The ale selection is Doom Bar, Tribute, IPA I think but I like of bit of Tribute so I'm happy enough. Friendly place, nice atmosphere, food seems to go down well amongst those eating, and you get a real slice of stoke newington life sat on the benches outside on a sunny day.

The best pub in Stokey by a country mile. Having recently moved to N16 I've been to virtually all the pubs in the area and this one stands right out. Everything your pub should be. Cosy, friendly, nicely laid out, good decor (mix of exposed brickwork and theatre/art furnishings), good lighting, good music, interesting and friendly patronage, good food and above all, good beer. 3 ales available last night, both the Tribute and Hophead I tried were delicious.
The food is good although not outstanding. But what sets this place apart is the whole package. Personally I could do without the TV showing sport but at least the sound was off. The music they piped in was excellent and the live brass band that came on later were brilliant.
This is what everyone's local should be like. Will come back here again and again.

This is my new Thursday night local. I've never had a bad night or an unmemorable one here. Great live music, great atmosphere and good service. It's the best pub night out in Stokie.

This is rapidly becoming my favourite pub in Stokey. Good food, always quality tunes, low lighting, friendly staff and a decent pint of Guinness too. Boxes duly ticked. I can see myself spending many a rainy winter night in there.

seven fifty for a strongbow and a tribute ur having a bloody bubble!5/10

Sounds good to me, except for the SKY TV.

I like this pub and go in most weeks but they need to review their policy on the TV. I was watching the cricket in there for about 3 hours and they insisted on turning it off 20 minutes from the end because apparently the silent TV in the corner was a huge cause of distraction for everyone else in the pub. I don't think anybody else had even noticed it was turned on. Anyway we obviously had to leave to watch the end elsewhere.
I believe this is related to a post a few down where someone questioned having sky news on in silence. They also referred to this being on the projector / big screen. Well now it is not the big screen it is a TV up in a corner so hardly distracting and it is also a little different from sky news when it is live sport and someone has been watching it for 3 hours and has specifically asked for it to be left on.

Quaint little pub - mixed crowd which was refreshing. Food did look good - well attended tables, and bar staff were friendly. Quite a small bar so long-ish wait when it is busy, but other than that, great place!

Not bad. Why?
1). Great Thai food with quality service (in-house restaurant team...)
2). Shows the footie on Sky.
3). Well kept ales and a decent pint of Guinness.
4). Decent decour, and its tichy size creates a decent atmosphere.
5). Quite dimly lit which I tend to like!

I've been back a few times and this place has really grown on me. very warm welcoming place. only downside is that they seem to have the TV on the projector all the time.. it's a bit distracting and who wants to see sky news with the sound turned off in a pub?
but still well worth a visit.

Nice little pub. The busy road and chicken places around it maybe don't promise much, but this is a warm and friendly little place with a good range of beers and a welcome addition to stokies pubs.
|
A pleasant and welcoming boozer which comes into its own on an evening when it gets dark. Good cheap food, great music (on Thursdays) and no nazi doormen partolling the overflowing outside area like in many other pubs with pavement drinking. A nice mix of oldies, crusties, trendies and local hard-men who all seem to get on fairly well together. Been in a few times and easily struck up conversations with strangers every time. Good selection of drinks although not much for the real ale drinkers. Other than that - theres something for everyone.

lived in stoke newington my whole life and remember this pub as quite intimidating when i first started my drinking around stokey but over the last year this has become my favourite pub in stoke newington great atmosphere no trouble and recently great music on a thursday night also recommend the best pub thai food in area. Well worth a visit!

This is well worth visiting, great atmosphere very welcoming staff, and the food looked great, pleasant background music, and dj nights.

not a great experience at the weekend, they ran out of a few ales and guinness as the footy and rugby were on....dont suppose youd expect to be busy and get the stocks up for a weekend of sporting action involving England....

The Coach and Horse has had a face lift and the inside has a warm and friendly atmosphere, far from the old worn out, dirty old mans pub of before. It serves the standard beers of Kornberg and Stella. Ive only been there on a Sunday for the roast, which may I say is excellence (at 8.95) and gives the Gusto pubs in the area a run for there money. See you there next Sunday.

Big football screens and very noisey. Typical East End sort of pub with the obligatory Thai restaurant thrown in for good measure (why??).
Agree with Anon 1 Jan, not the warmest of welcomes, but I've had worse esp in Stokey which isn't exactly flush with decent bars.

I go this pub every few weeks, mostly to watch football, and had no idea that it was gay/gay friendly. Didn't seem particularly friendly, and loud, grumpy chucking out. However, compared with the local alternatives it is a good place for a quiet beer, and the food is good
|
Good solid pub when compared to the naff wine bars and theme pubs popping up in church street. Good beer and the food was better than I had in Bangkok. It most clearly is gay friendly and listed in the gay section of time out. My partner and i are regulars and John will tell you also, best pub in london!

Good place to watch footie if you don't need a giant screen (they've got about 4 tellies instead). Top bar staff, good thai food, nice regular boozer (but it was better before they moved the bar a few years back and got rid of the crusty nutters!)

i go to this pub a lot, it is not a gay pub by any stretch of the imagination. You can watch football here. Didn't experience a particularly warm welcome, but still go regularly

The Coach and Horses is nto a gay pub, but rather attracts a lively and varied mix of customers, some of whom may be gay. They also do the best green chicken curry outside Bangkok at extremely reasonable prices.
A friendly, family run pub where you are always given a warm welcome

Wouldn't have spotted this was a gay pub, good Thai menu and bar stools that look like pints of Guinness. No real ales.

Lively and used to do Thai food as I remember. Really enjoyed it.
