Nice overpriced food :-/
Ciubecca - 3 May 2013 11:44
if it was not for the nice looking ladies I would of left this place after my first sip, never mind drink, it's really a big beer garden thats all
newirish - 21 Jul 2012 16:03
Only good for watching sport outside (and if that's what you're after, you're better off going to the Drayton Court). Otherwise I have never seen the attraction of this place. You sit outside in the car park on the main road, it's overpriced due to the table service and doesn't serve any decent real ale. Had it's own way in this stretch of pubs for way too long and thankfully there's some competition now.
normantonend - 18 Mar 2012 12:40
Fantastic food at good prices and red stripe on tap, amazing :)
Tim2tim - 22 Dec 2011 19:50
it's a nice pub, small but large smoking area, great selection of beers which I always like
rogersmith - 21 Jun 2011 15:11
Right ok, I waited for 10 minutes to be served, tried red stripe and it tasted horrible, complained and nothing was done...why guys? come on....why would I hand back a full pint, I've nothing to gain apart from trying to get a better pint.
thebeercritic - 12 May 2011 17:47
Cocktails seemed to come out of a foil pouch?! - tasted ok but not exactly flare bartending. Otherwise it's not bad: good for a fag and a pint in the garden. Pretty tired looking inside and I'm not sure i'd eat after looking at (a) the prices and (b) the state of the toilets...
ealingnewbie - 15 Apr 2011 22:26
Stripe on tap, big screens on the wall - a great place to watch the footie with the boys. Bosh
_pete_ - 13 Apr 2011 00:14
Great pub great service great food and great great great cocktails
Angel2_2000 - 18 Feb 2011 11:54
terrible guinness but great food........service to ur table when ur in the beer garden, always a plus in my book.
Beer_guy1 - 10 Feb 2011 14:04
Great place to take your partner, just a tad overpriced, but good service.
mrbee - 10 Feb 2011 13:46
Nice, busy pub. Pity the only real ale is Adnam's Broadside (oddly served chilled). A tad expensive though.
cgilson42 - 26 Mar 2010 13:44
Really enjoy this place. Good atmosphere and food is fab. Drinks are pricey but you get table service so appeals to a different clientel to most Ealing pubs. Well worth a visit
jinglebell - 27 Nov 2009 11:10
A top bar. Good range of beers, well above avterage food, and a friendly hard-wording landlord who also organises excellent food & wine tasting evenings 2 or 3 times every summer.
Along with the Drayton, the best pub in West Ealing.
tate - 11 Oct 2009 15:10
Popped in briefly a couple of Saturdays ago. Not overly impressed. It's v small but has a large-ish albeit cramped outside area that always seems to be busy. Good for a quick drink but not to stay. I live in West Ealing and have some friends coming round tomorrow (Sat) and I refuse to take them anywhere in West Ealing cos it's just so - blah. No atmosphere and a little boring. I now understand why the Northstar is always so rammed!
Tiny - 7 Aug 2009 12:23
Overly expensive and it's apparently because the landlord wants to keep out cheapskates. Who cares? I'm not prepared to pay double for drinks when there are dozens of pubs within spitting distance which are cheaper and less pretentious... I don't need table service, if I want posh and pricey, I'll go up town!
w5lioness - 28 Oct 2008 14:16
This is the best bar in Ealing (albeit a wee bit off the beaten track). The cocktails are magnificent -the best I have had anywhere. The table service is great (means that you're not standing for ages at the bar waiting on cocktails) and I found the staff to be very friendly. The clientele is very mixed which gives the bar a nice ambience. The outside area is excellent for smokers and best of all (for nightclub mums like me) they let kids in too.Even better than Baroque was in the early days.
binge_drinker - 27 May 2008 16:25
nice pub shame about the manager
semtex - 26 Mar 2008 12:18
The Castlebar has been a very welcome addition to West Ealing's range of pubs since it was renovated a few years ago.

The Adnams real ale is well kept, the Guinness is excellent and we've never been disappointed by the wines.

The food is lovely, with a menu that changes regularly, offering a good range of well presented food that has been cooked with care and pride.

It can be a little expensive sometimes and the service initially slow, but once Abel and his team have spotted you, your glass isn't empty for long.

There are three top notch curry houses within stumbling distance of The Castlebar, which certainly adds to its already strong appeal.
porcus_volans - 3 Feb 2008 19:51
I love this pub, it is my local pub and I go there quite a lot. The food is really good, the staff are very friendly and I love the outside area. However, it is pricey with a glass of bog standard wine being 6 pounds - a bit cheeky considering its location.
sadbhe - 12 Jun 2007 16:08
Probably the best bar in Ealing. Great food, friendly staff (although they seem to change every few months), waiter service, and brilliant year-round beer garden (with a massive canopy and loads of heaters - ideal for winter). OK, it's not especially cheap, but I don't think it's particularly expensive either.

Plus, it's open later than the majority of Ealing bars/pubs.
liyusnh - 5 Jun 2007 15:38
I visited this pub on Friday evening for the first time in ages.

A lot of money has been spent on the decor and the "traditionalist" in me was somewhat dismayed that it now looks like a posh pizza establishment once you are in the door.

The bar staff were getting ready for the rush later in the evening but were nice and friendly with big smiles. This, for me, made up for the slightly disconcerting decoration.

The beer was reasonably priced for Ealing and it is right by bus stops on either side of the road, with restuarants and take aways just a drunken stagger away!

Nice touch in the gents with jokes positioned over the urinals for you to read while you have a wee!

EskimoJoe - 4 Jun 2007 11:30
They rip you off in the sense that you set up a tab at your table and do not realise how ridiculously overpriced the drinks are until the end of your night when you get your bill.
mitsy - 25 May 2007 15:38
I go to this place at least 3 times a week with work - either for lunches or after work - and we are always very well looked after.
Abel, the owner, is a real gem and treats us very well, to the extent of getting narky with the staff if we have to leave our table to get drinks.
The food is delicious and, while slightly expensive, completely worth the price, plus the menu changes frequently meaning that there is always a new choice. The wine is good, the staff are friendly and the place always has a really good vibe to it. If I were to suggest a pub to meet friends in or to go on a date then this would be my choice in Ealing.
LauraLoo1983 - 18 May 2007 15:14
The Castlebar is everything one can want in West Ealing: Great service, comparable prices, excellent food, and a staff that is courteous, timely, and knowledgeable of the establishment extensive wine and beer selection. My partner's office is in the area, and although we prefer to come home and visit a pub near our home, if I meet him at his office at the end of the day, I rather stop at the Castlebar and enjoy a few drinks, appetisers, and dinner instead of missing out on the alfresco seating this pub offers. Do not be swayed by the majority of comments on this page. The grammatical and punctuation mistakes should be a clue as to the reliability of their opinion.
DosMaridos - 12 May 2007 16:42
table service is verry slow and 4.70 for a glass of pinot gricio in west ealing should be classed as robbery. This is not classy its just a run of the mill gastro pub, and should be proud of that instead there trying to hard to be an upmarket wine bar but the service doesn't live up to this.
anonymous - 26 Apr 2007 22:24
Pricey. Staff are slow, surroundings are pretty ok, but I resent paying 3 for a guinness!
s9s - 23 Apr 2007 18:11
This pub is going downhill. The layout is great, selection of beer is good but too many negatives. Table service is a joke (it's not been right once in about ten visits), the food is good but expensive, the manager and owner are rude and on my last visit, I was charged 3.90 for a single vodka and coke!!! That maybe Central London prices but not in West Ealing.

A shame as used to really love this pub. I'm going to be taking my custom elsewhere....
Munkeybutler - 17 Apr 2007 11:45
Nice beer garden! Not the cheapest place in Ealing for food and drinks, but very chilled place out due to the beer garden. Def my fav place in Ealing to escape loud music and drunken yobs!
MystiKaL - 16 Apr 2007 16:18
I agree with the last post, much needed in the area. A little pricy but the food is very good. It will undoubtably be my summer pub.
Monty1 - 4 Apr 2007 16:19
This is classy!!! Its different from other bars, smart and exciting. They have almost every spirit avaliable. Reminds me of bars in central london and the outside seating lovely in the summer and winter. This is an easy going, stylish drinking spot.
anonymous - 29 Mar 2007 18:58
I like this pub, the beer is good (if very overpriced) and crisp, tastes very fresh and its a pleasure to sit out on the heated terrace. The only downside is that the waiter service takes forever!
mitsy - 16 Feb 2007 11:34
This is probably my favourite local bar and definitely one of my top places to eat out in Ealing. The manager makes a real effort to get to know the regulars and you're always made to feel welcome. The food is fab (especially the potato dauphinoise!). A class above your normal pub food.
ladyjay - 8 Jan 2007 01:11
Had a great meal with the guys from work. Best food in the area. The service is very good but not sure about the no smoking ban inside.
Toque - 13 Sep 2006 21:27
used to be a nice place to come for a pint and a good Sunday Lunch, now the new manager has taken over, (we call him 'French John') the focus is all about Food and big groups.

And may I add the food has been hiked up in price to such silly levels that the cheapest thing on the evening menu is 9.50!!!! , when I asked if I could have a burger and chips I was told only at lunch time!!!!! the only saving grace is you can get a late pint here as its open late, till 2.00 I think
pantomimehorse - 28 Jul 2006 16:46
Went here last night and had a delightful meal with my partner.

The service was very friendly and the food was good too. The outside area was nice and busy with a great buzz about the place.

I'll be coming back
martinbarwick - 5 Jul 2006 12:59
What a great day we had on Sunday afternoon/evening. We had great food great wine and Englands world cup game on the wide screen TV !!

Can't wait to go back next time I am in town!!

anonymous - 26 Jun 2006 16:46
Just moved into the area, looking for a new local.

Went for a bite to eat on Wednesday night, food was great, atmosphere was better and the service was fantastic. I was surprised that you even get table service!!

My search is over!
shadowvg - 24 Jun 2006 10:30
went last night for the football.......sure the place is ok..but why oh why have bouncers on when they can't see trouble comming, 2 vans and a police car outside..... not the Castlebar I know!!!
anonymous - 15 Jun 2006 19:53
They were showing the Gooners match on two screens outside for the smokers and there were loads of them. I thought I would have a pint and join them, but NO, at 3.12 for a pint of bog standard Fosters they have got to be having a laugh or did they just put the prices up for the match? If this is the normal price, how much is the Staropramen and San Miguel 4.00??? This pub is in West Ealing not the West Bank of Paris!!!
wmon - 18 May 2006 08:04
A very nice pub. Lagers on tap include Staropramen and San Miguel. Inside it's non smoking which may bother some but there is quite a large seating area outside where smoking is permitted with heaters for the winter, though I can't say how well these work. Good service though and nice food.
C.B - 11 May 2006 13:25
Wonderfull place Ladies and Gents. I went there for Valentaines and had a great meal with excellent service provided, which just top our evening off nicely. Defo recommend it for all ages/occasions and if your lucky you may even see me there.
trpat - 15 Feb 2006 19:29
This is a very good pub - a lot better than all the pubs down in Ealing Broadway bar The North Star. Decent selection of food and beers, and the San Miguel is great.
illhaveastella - 30 Jan 2006 23:37
Had a great evening with a friend here. Food was delicious and the service excellent! The size of the Starter Course was like a main and was a meal in itself!!
A taxi was called for us and a Bailey's on the house while we waited!!
Service was great , attentive and friendly. Will certainly visit again soon.
drinkingsally123 - 24 Nov 2005 20:34
I have lived in eailing for about 5 years and finally have found a place that brings great service, atmosphere, chilled music and great food. I defo recomend this place for any type of age and style. I went there with my girls had a giggle and met some very nice attractive men yummy!!!!
This place is so gonna be my local hang out place.

trpat - 8 Oct 2005 13:20
Try the Guiness and oysters. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The food is very reasonably price and excellent quality. Not enough chairs on busy nights and artwork is a bit dodgy.
a2z - 1 Oct 2005 13:11
great atmo, gr8 staff, dont know about food yet, but it gets my recomandation, if you can get 100 people sitting outside in pissing rain its doing something right, oh, get some more chairs!!
anonymous - 30 Sep 2005 22:17
I returned to this establishment to give it the once over again and to see if my opinion of it had changed, well it has not, still cant get on with it.

Point of note: Apart from a group of 15 ladies having a meal inside everyone else, approx 70, was outside, of which 95% were smokers! Come the depths of winter no amount of heaters are going to keep you warm on the patio and I suggest that they will go else where and this pub will die, then the GP can have the pub to himself.

wmon - 23 Sep 2005 08:24
Ignoring the anonymous insults, this is a good pub - will be interested to see how feasible it is in the middle of winter, but I suspect the big patio heaters might still work well and make it an all year round pub to sit outside at - Nice!
TheGP - 22 Sep 2005 12:06
"Buffoon" - Nice - I don't choose to throw insults from behind an anonymous tag.

To repeat one final time, my username has details of all the pubs I have been on so anyone can see what I like or dislike, or indeed, contact me direct if they disagree through the BITE messages option.

You go on to pubs, post insults and no-one can come back to you, or see if you have posted insults anywhere else, or indeed differentiate you between any other troll posting insults or their opinion.

Got the difference yet maybe?
TheGP - 22 Sep 2005 12:05
Nice pub with decent food, drinks are expensive though,id choose this over baroque anyday though.
bernard2504 - 22 Sep 2005 11:55
Went here Friday night. Nice buzz, but spaciously laid out so didn't feel too packed even though there was a good crowd there. Staff were extremely friendly and I liked the food a lot--good quality and massive big portions. Try the pint of prawns--it's exactly what they say it is!! Also a good balance between traditional and some fancier nosh. I liked the fact that the inside is non-smoking. Even though I'm a social smoker, don't always like feeling as if I'm sitting inside a chimney. The patio is smoking and heated so you can always nip outside for a cig if you feel the need.

Haven't been here in the daytime yet. Would be curious to know what it's like then... Overall, cool place, good buzz, ideal place to meet up with yer mates, sink a few or get a decent meal at an OK price...
seamus21 - 21 Sep 2005 17:40
A Birthday lunch at the Castlebar was a triumph. Both vegetarain and non-vegetarian attendees were so well looked after. All office Birthday and Chrismtas functions will definately be held there - What nice people.
Manj - 19 Sep 2005 12:40
Well, I went, I saw, I enjoyed.

No signs of odd folk such as TheGP there, just normal people, a real mixed bag actually young and old. The patio heaters were needed and appreciated!

The menu, as far as I could tell has not simplified much at all and not many people were eating it at that time, probably 1 or 2 tables in the whole area. However, I did eat from the menu, and the food was very good indeed. Still a slightly pretentious menu though, however you look at it.

Recommended.

Once again TheGP, I would suggest your own name is also a username and not your own, you buffoon. Can't you see the irony?

'Anonymous'
anonymous - 17 Sep 2005 18:49
This is a nice pub, the staff are cool and when I waited 20 mins for my late mate to turn up I didn't feel at all out of place as a female sitting with a drink alone in a pub/bar. The deco is lovely, the heated patio is great, my only complaint would be that the beer is well overpriced, however still a big improvement on the Coach and Horses
bub - 13 Sep 2005 15:02
If there is a simplified menu it should suit you fine, anonymous. Takes guts to hide behind your username you know, well done!
TheGP - 11 Sep 2005 19:12
Stumbled across this place Sunday afternooon - live jazz on the deck so we wandered in. Nice bar, great brunch, good atmosphere - would like to see what it's like in the evening...
gaia - 5 Sep 2005 21:55
Well, a return trip is due, so I can check out the 'simplified' menu. Watch this space.

Let's hope I don't bump into TheGP, who may be sitting with his nose in the air, somewhere close by...

Hi. I have been in this bar a few times over the summer and was a bit surprised. So when I saw the other comments I thought I'd add mine.
I really liked it. First time - I was on my own, the staff were nice - so was the wine but most of all from a women's perspective I felt very secure. I thought it was very strange for a pub like this (no tv screens) to be located off the main drag but it does seem to be busy. When I mentioned it to my Ealing friends they all seemed to think that I might be exaggerating a little bit but Ive gone back 4 times and met with them there. Now there in there more than I am. Anyway, by all accounts the food is also good? I have yet to eat there myself but from what Ive heard and looking at the boards it certainly looks promising?
And thats it. I would definitely recommend anyone looking at this website to check this bar out. Its got a good feel about it.

anonymous - 14 Aug 2005 18:03
Yet again you have missed the point. Anyone can read all of the comments about any of the pubs I have been to. You can dip on to any pub and leave insults behind the banner of "anonymous".

And why would you have to go to somewhere like Hoxton? A meaningless statement.

Anyway, anyone on this page, forget all the petty anonymous sniping - IN MY OPINION the Castlebar is a very good pub. Others may disagree, but some like pubs like this one, others like Edwards and the like - Different strokes for different folks etc.. I think most people will know exactly which camp they fall into.
TheGP - 24 Jul 2005 15:37
Yes, because TheGP is his real name isn't it, rather than something totally anonymous....!

Thanks for the suggestion wmon but I feel to meet on neutral ground around Ealing might not be possible, you see TheGP feels the pubs aren't up to his standards...I might have to go to somwhere like Hoxton...

'Anonymous'
anonymous - 24 Jul 2005 14:05
Perhaps the GP and anonymous should meet on neutral ground, say the Three Wishes down the road and discus the merits and demerits of the local pubs, any one want to be referee !!!!
wmon - 23 Jul 2005 23:02
I'm not really taking your post seriously as it seems you are more upset I don't like one particular bar that you like (Baroque) and have formed your entire opinion on that.

Each person to their own as you say, only I don't have to resort to insulting people to put across my view - especially people who post insults behind the banner of "anonymous".
TheGP - 22 Jul 2005 16:23
GP - does it matter if we are anonymous or not? As wmon says you can agree or disagree with comments as is its very nature, but you, by your own signature have consistently marked yourself out as slightly pretentious, who thinks pubs you don't like are filled by chavs. Why because you don't like them?

I have come across your snobby, outdated comments before (i.e. Baroque). Perhaps, Little Britain would be a more natural environment for your peculiar tastes.

It's still a good pub btw
anonymous - 20 Jul 2005 22:30
No problem at all Wmon, but I suggest you re-read my last post as you've completely missed my point. My post wasn't aimed at you.
TheGP - 20 Jul 2005 13:12
I think the GP should get a sence of perspective, this is a site where people can post their own views, ie if you dont like a pub say so and vice versa, this is what freedom of expresion is all about. I happen not to like this pub in it's present form, what is the problem with that?
wmon - 19 Jul 2005 12:46
Would be interested if all these "Anonymous" posters would reveal their identiry - As they are the ones having a pop at me, and accusing the management of having posted.

I think they should be quiet unless they reveal themselves!

As for Gastro Pub.. Why not eh? Ealing has enough bars for Chavs, ie. 99% of all the other places down the Uxbridge road so this place is a refreshing change.
TheGP - 18 Jul 2005 16:45
Went back here last week with wife, she agrees with my comments of the 20 June. No smoking policy in doors, lets see how long that will last or the pub come to think of it, when winters comes.
wmon - 18 Jul 2005 16:19
Such positive opinions about this pub...you would almost think that they are from the management endorsing it...

Since when has an area required a gastro pub?! particularly with 30 eateries within a mile. The menu is 80% pretentious, with a few basics. There should be more of them. It is a pub rather than a restaurant is it not? I have dined at some lovely restaurants (and pubs), and only in Hoxton have I seen the same tatty pretentiousness.

What happened to back to basics?
ps: Lovely as a pub.
anonymous - 13 Jul 2005 19:00
Have to disagree with comments posted on July 7th. Ate at The Castlebar on Monday evening last. Granted the menu was quite long but it's not expensive and it's not pretentious.....it's about time West Ealing had a gastro pub to compliment the wide variety of other cuisines available. I had a thai chicken salad which was superb. My friend had rib-eye steak which was served with chips & salad. We shared a rather heavenly chocolate fudge tart with ice-cream for dessert. Washed down with a bottle of Rose wine and a large bottle of still water. All this for just over 40.....I'll certainly be going back for more soon!
ttfn1230 - 13 Jul 2005 16:46
Great Pub. By far the best in the local area. The Menu has been simplified and I would strongly recommend a return visit. Try the homemade burger and chips. No smoking policy indoors is a masterstroke by the owners. Well done.
anonymous - 9 Jul 2005 13:35
OMG, theGP approves of this, well shiver my timbers...

The 2 previous comments are both incorrect, it is neither average nor excellent, it is somewhere in between. It is a nice pub with lots of space and tables to sit outside and in, with a heated patio. Service is good, and it has lots of beers on tap including Stapromen if you like that kind of thing.

However, there is one criticism, the food. West Ealing is not Notting Hill nor Primrose Hill and should not have a menu that suggests it, i.e. pretentious, long winded and expensive, which as far as I could see, out of about 60 people, 2 people were eating. They need Gordon Ramsay in there to sort out the menu and simplify it.

Apart from that very nice. Bravo.
anonymous - 7 Jul 2005 09:14
Excellent is a very much over used word, and very much so when used to describe this pub. Average is how I would decribe it, ok its has a large decked patio area, but do you really want to breath the fumes from the Uxbridge road with your pint. Not cheap either.
anonymous - 20 Jun 2005 17:21
Some websites seem to suggest that this place and Baroque is one and the same - It isn't, they are completely separate.

The Castlebar is an excellent pub, with big outdoor tables surrounded by loads of patio heaters. Would fully recommend a visit..
