Relaxing, comfortable atmosphere for a lunchtime visit. Food was quickly served and fantastic quality...with portion sizes to satisfy anyone! A good range of real ales, well kept and served by friendly, chatty staff who help make all feel welcome. A bit of a challenge to find, but well worth the effort...you won't be disappointed!

Hidden in the back streets of the Oval. 4 handpumps with no real ale was a disapointment. Could be a gold mine. Friendly staff and locals.

Visited during the rain affected cricket yesterday. Busy but with a nice atmosphere. No Youngs on, but the Bombardier was fine with Green King IPA the other option. Quick service from friendly bar staff, although beer selection somewhat underwhelming.

I've visited this pub twice now for the Sunday roast and have had a pleasant experience both times.
You get a generous amount of roast and the vegetables are served on a separate plate. The desserts are also very nice. The chocolate fudge cake and toffee apple pie were both delicious. The staff were quick and friendly on both occasions.
There are some interesting local characters about the place. The ageing rocker mentioned by the previous reviewer is harmless enough. He sits at the bar and drinks his bottle of rose. If you watch carefully he waters down the rose with a jug of water he keeps nearby. He might look a bit dishevelled but on both occasions I've visited he doesn't go round bothering anyone. I reckon he adds character to the place.
There is a sheltered smoking area outside and what appears to be a very nice beer garden. There is also a lovely conservatory.
My only problem with the last visit was the rap music that played inbetween every Perry Como type track. Less rap music and more Perry Como please!

I must have caught this pub on a bad day, as I can only descripe it as bizarre. Now, a good mixture of clientele is normally a good thing, but not when one of them is an aging rocker slouched at the bar on what appeared to be his second bottle of rose ( this was 1.30pm ! ) and another is a lone lout who appears to be aiming to start trouble. Gains a point for having very friendly bar staff, but loses it for somehow serving a pint of real alse ( Young's ) that was cold, fizzy and tastless - not sure how you get fizz from a handpump but they managed it here.

A tough place to find this - a few hundred yards down a dark residential side street actually had me a little apprehensive.
The exterior of the Roebuck is appealing and totally out of place for this part of London. Inside there are the dreaded sofas to the left of the door and some nice chairs and tables to the right. A conservatory to the rear right was not in use when I dropped in.
Bar staff were extremely friendly and even brought my drink to the table. Clientele seemed mostly regulars but also friendly. Juke box is excellent and there were no intrusive TVs
Hard to sum this place up really -it's probably great after international cricket at the Oval (I always go to the Royal Oak on the way to Vuaxhall station but I'd happily come here as well) but as a destination I suspect it's locatio lets it down.

Great little pub that is hidden away on the backstreets - highly recommended

Real ales on were Youngs Bitter and Bombardier. I had the Youngs Bitter (3.10 a pint), which was not good, but I suspect that I may have had the first one of the day. Tucked away as it is down Ashmole St, I doubt that it gets much, if any, passing trade, but it probably gets busy on Oval match days. All the tables had cutlery on them in little tin buckets. So, presumably food must be important to them, but I didnt see any menus. Its a fairly big one-room pub, but expanded with a conservatory at the back, plus a covered outside area for smokers. As usual there are TVs on the walls, but not on when I was in during lunchtime, and some pop music being played including Petula Clark of all people. Furnishings comprised normal tables and chairs, plus a couple of sofas in one of the front window bays, and the dcor was unremarkable (I cant remember what it looked like, so there cant have been anything special about it). All in all an unremarkable pub. Poor beer quality doesnt seem to be a recurring feature in previous posts, so I guess I must just have been unlucky. Not really worth the effort of seeking out for the pub itself, but no doubt OK for a pint or two after the cricket.

Not much further than a mighty six from the Oval, but can be devilish to find. This only adds to the experience as it is much less busy than others pubs in the area after a match. Youngs and Bomabardier sold but on night we visited the former was off. Friendly and efficient service. Pub looks recently renovated inside and out in traditional manner with space to drink ouside and covered outside area to the side. Some interesting characters frequenting the pub on night visited including a Peter Perrett (Only Ones) lookalike - ask your Dad!! Would recommend if in the area or visiting the Oval as the choice of other pubs not very inspiring.

Ssssshhh! Don't tell everyone about this haven from the marauding crowds during/before/after cricket at The Oval. Only a drive and a 9-iron from the main gates. Good beer (Youngs, I think), good food. All at a fair price and served in a friendly fashion. Hurrah.

Went in there on a couple of occasions during the T20 cricket at The Oval. Very impressed. it's been refurbished since my last visit and is smart without being over the top.
Nice and confortable, friendly pub. Ideal for cricket yet it seems a secret to many fans who use the other pubs nearby

Great old fashioned pub, completely unpretentious, with fantastic food (it's not a gastropub, the food is just GREAT!) When we arrived they had just finished serving Sunday roasts, but the chef offered to cook us something anyway. Had one of the best steaks I have ever eaten!
The family who run it are incredibly friendly and made us feel completely at home, and the regulars are also really friendly. It was the perfect venue for a chilled out Sunday evening.
Nice cat too!

In search of a change from our regular pub, I scoured this site and chose the Roebuck based on its 8.3 rating and reviews - which have clearly been written by the pub, unless your idea of a good night includes:
- empty on a saturday night except for 3 people at the end of the bar, and a family (including at least 4 small children) which grew during the evening
- the decor of a uninhabited travelodge tea-room (with a touch of The Shining), plus a couple of welcoming England flags here and there
- bright overhead lighting throughout
- video screen playing 80s hits, otherwise blissful silence bar the kids
- last orders at 10.30, asked to drink up 15 minutes later ("just waiting for you now yeah?")
- the warm feeling of trespassing in someone else's house
It's a must for those with the right sense of humour. Also very clean.

Great little pub, currently closed for one week under going refurbishment and re-opening on November 2nd. Karaoke on a Friday night, which is always fun. Clean, lively, friendly, I would hihgly recommend the Roebuck to anyone on all fronts - food, drink, facilities and atmosphere.

Really friendly pub, set back from the busy Oval area. Lovely little beer garden which on a sunny day is a wonderful little oasis.
The staff are always really friendly and chilled. Superb quiz machine too.
I've been there on quite a few occasions and always had a really enjoyable evening, have even attempted a very drunken karaoke -I apologise to anyone who had to witness that!
I'll be going back again.

Heard about this site from a friend, just got to say this is my local, I love the place, had a great Christmas Eve, loved watching the cat in the Christmas tree. Enjoyed new years, everyone was so nice. Best wishes to all users and staff for 2007

I went in on a quiet weekday afternoon after a county match. It's a pretty big place, the staff are friendly, the beer is OK and it's a short walk from the Oval. It's not a pub for the real ale fanatic or the gastropub-trendy set, but it's a good backstreet boozer.

Heard that My Way version. Hey Ho Silver Lining had us joining in from the garden. What a great night after a good day at the Oval. We were made very welcome and the atmosphere was great. This will be the pub for us at future Oval events.

Had three great lunches with friends during the last test. Went back after the game, good service from a bar well staffed, really enjoyed the karaoke on the Friday, got to the point where I wanted to join in, so did. We all have our 15mins, mine was four and My Way (badly) but what cheering and clapping!!

Five of us visited this pub before and after the Surrey vs Middlesex 20/20 last Friday. An extremely friendly and efficient service from the landlord and his staff. I despise karaoke but the Nina Simone soundalike was superb. This pub is a ''must visit'' for everyone any time they are in the area.

Enjoyed lunch with friends who took me along on the one day test at the Oval. I must admit that I was amazed at the service. Staff and customers all seemed laid back but it happened! The garden is smashing where we relaxed after the game until the England game started. The pub was totally rearranged to make sure everyone could see. Had a great day with friends thanks to this very pleasant venue.

after going through the listings visited here to meet up with friends recently moved into the area. We all had a great evening. Not many old fashioned pubs left so our mates are going to be visiting this one frequently.

Moved away three months ago, visited friends and went to the pub. Was greeted like an old friend, they remembered my name and drink, a brilliant pint of Guinness. Admired the Christmas decs, and watched with everyone else with amusement as THAT CAT sat in the tree. Love this pub.

Had two great evenings and two days watching testmatch TV. Watched great staff working to please everyone. Enjoyed the celebration champagne from the landlord and the welcome given to the Aussies, a genuine cheer and handshakes all round from the English in the bar, which set the tone for a fantastic memorable evening. Made me proud. Will be going back

Absolutely heaving after the recent Ashes at the Oval - certainly a contrast to all the other times when Ive been in and there have been a maximum of ten people quietly sipping their pints.
The pub more than rose to the challenge though with loads more bar staff and VB beer for our Antipodean friends.
Thoroughly recommend this pub - it spacious, not pretentious, has a great outdoors area and is very welcoming
|
Really enjoyed a Friday evening here, Karaoke not my thing but enjoyed watching - not too many Sinatra's either. Everyone seemed to be having fun, cheered me up a lot just watching. Will be going back to see what else goes on.

Good pub. It seemed to have karaoke on when I last visited (a Friday evening) which is not to everyone's taste

Recommend this pub as a friendly local, even if you are not local. Liked my welcome, pint, and chat with the staff. Will be back

After a very nasty experiencewith the manager in the nearby Fentiman Arms I went here to cool down. Enjoyed a quiet beer in the garden, and felt welcome, not only that they said goodbye and thank as I left. Will be heading back there again soon. Nigel

Had a great Pimms after turning down a very expensive jug at a nearby pub. Enjoyed a steak and another Pimms all for less than the cost of the jug. No service charge either.

Went here after 20/20 game at the Oval trying to avoid the crush of other local pubs. Found it very welcoming and friendly. No prentention for sure, a good old fashioned pub. Liked the atmosphere, garden and locals who all seemed friendly. Didn't see the cat though.
|
Indeed; very nice friendly cat. And good spacious drinking pub with no pretensions. Not the easiest to find but good for us locals - probably 5-10 mins walk from Oval or Vauxhall tubes. I'd say this is a pub more for beer than wine - it is slightly disconcerting when asking for white wine to be offered liefraumilsch as the first choice but they do have better wines although all come in the small bottles; I suppose they dont sell much wine. Overall I would thoroughly recommend this pub.
