Terra Nova, Cardiffback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
We sat outside here last week watching the world go by. The Brains' SA Gold was pretty good, but the interior is getting very tired and dated. It has not changed since our last visit in 2011. It's no wonder the Terra Nova was quiet, but there was a long queue waiting to be served at the nearby Wetherspoons. That perhaps says it all !!!

As we were strolling around the waterfront area my wife noticed that Terra Nova had a mini-beer festival on so in we went. Pretty busy bar with several rooms and a mezzanine area. The staff were quick, cheery and helpful and the young lady serving the festival ales was very chatty to customers - explaining about the different ales (to the best of her knowledge!!). I had a beer and the wife had a coffee both of which were fine but probably a little above normal Cardiff prices though standard for our pubs at home. Nice views across the bat from the outside seating. This is not a boozer but good quality bar in amongst the many chain restaurants and coffee shops in the area. Note: Although the Mermaid Quay etc., has been built/renovated recently, there are many fabulous old buildings between here and Cardiff Bay railway station which are lying empty or derelict. They have much more architectural merit than most of the bars/restaurants on the waterfront and it is quite sad to see them as you head back for the train.

A cavernous pub right on the waterfront in Cardiff Bay that seems to go on for ever. Every time you think youve finished exploring, there is yet another room further on again.
Its split over two levels, and in addition to this there is outside seating on some decking at ground level, and two balconies offering great views across the bay. The downstairs bar has a part tiled, part wooden floor and various painted arches that seem intended to remind you of a castle. Two sweeping wooden staircases lead to the wood floored upper bar, and here the castle theme continues with some fake stonework. Further stairs lead to a crows nest which looks to be a reasonably decent seating area with an attractive painted ceiling. Various nautical memorabilia is scattered around. Unusually, a Costa coffee is attached to the pub, and is effectively another room off of it.
There was a decent enough pub grub menu at reasonable prices. This was divided in to sections such as Light Bites, Burgers, Favourites, etc. A Ham, Egg & Chips was decent enough value at 6.95, especially bearing in mind the location, and came with a thick wedge of ham and a couple of eggs. Service at the bar was a bit slow, but other than that Ive got no complaints.
Beers on tap were all from the Brains stable, with their Bitter, Dark, SA and SA Gold. The solitary cider was Strongbow, unfortunately.

I work in The Bay and sometimes get dragged here for a leaving do or birthday. I really don't see the attraction, beer and food are both really expensive. Its always packed(?) so you can never get a seat. coffee and cake offer for 2.99 is a good deal in the afternoons though.

They serve expensive beer in plastic glasses whenever busy (Fri/Sat etc)!

not really worth a visit unless you are noveau cardiff bay, or you fancy some expensive but decent food, not a good place for a drink
