aparently a lot to spent on the place to restore it soon . Shame they do not do food and allow the firedoors off the main bar to be opened although for people to smoke although they have a smoking " terrace " smoke wafts in and is not nice. Staff are as guilty of this as customers.

One of the few old bars remaining from earlier times, saved as it's listed building.. It's just a shame that the interior has been spoiled with tacky decorations and banners. Still, at least it's still standing, unlike the Fishguard, which was next door, the Salutation, which was opposite, and the Custom House, Glastonbury Arms and the Crown from Bute Street.
It's a friendly, lively gay bar, with karaoke and drag nights - so don't go there expecting a traditional old boozer.

Majestic and imposing exterior which is slightly lost inside now (although the main bar front is still very striking with its tiling). I should have spotted that it was a "gay" pub by the fittings around the places - light fittings and mirrors etc.,were all a bit twinkley and twee ! Brain's Bitter and their IPA were available - the Bitter was drinkable but didn't blow my socks off. So long as the main structure and integrity of this pub is maintained it will still be valid as a classicly architectural pub but it would be great to see it put back to its original internal condition!

Beautifully preserved pub in parts, particularly the bar and tiling, though has been stripped back a bit too much inside. Beer nothing special (Brain's Bitter only). As previous posters have noted, now a gay pub.

Good fun. Very camp. Nice crowd. Basic Brains Bitter, so not really an ale pub.

Gay friendly I'd say more than a gay pub. Good cheap booze,Brains SA and Dark were on and were both excellent. Friendly staff and punters. Doors on both cubicles in the gents. No fault could be found.

Possibly the only pub in the UK without a door on the shithouse ...

Visited this pub on the basis of the Camra National Inventory-listed features - heavy tiling on the outside, areas of tiling inside and a magnificent bar. A wierd mixture of these preserved features and then totally featureless expanses of walls. Many doors show where the interior would have been sub-divided in the old days, but huge expanse of nearly new bricks at the rear of the pub show that this is basically an old facade slapped on a new frame. Not having the local knowledge before visting, it soon became apparent that this is a gay pub, but it was welcoming to us at a very quiet time on a Sunday afternoon. Many handpumps on the bar, but only one Brains real ale on. Decent enough and VERY cheap - 1.65 a pint. Worth a visit a view of the preserved decor, but I suppose it depends on you as to whether you stay on after that...

Mmm Just wish the prices didnt go up and down like a yo yo! Good value when a Happy Hour or bargins are about.
