user reviews of the Victoria Park, London

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

This place is now called the People's Park Tavern. It's situated on the edge of Victoria Park. The outdoor seating areas at the rear were packed when we arrived yesterday, with many families. There is even a crazy golf course in the garden for kids. There was seating available inside, with some people having meals. I believe there was further seating upstairs. Getting served was a bit of a chore though. There were plenty of staff, just too many customers. Ales are brewed on the premises by Laines. But there were only 3 of them - Doubloon, Single Hop Series Summit & Red Empire. There was no real cider either. A bit disappointing and too busy to enjoy. I got the feeling there were normally more ales and possibly cider. But on this visit, this place was distinctly average.

having first reviewed this in early 2009, when it was in early days of its revamp, time for an update.

firstly, staff need to lighten up a bit. we know you're a little busier, but try not to take yourselves too seriously. Those Time out nominations seem to have gone to the head a little.

food is a bit of a mixed-bag. Quality when its arrived has overall been very sound, but it has been subject to some bewildering delays (did we actually forget to order?). I've also been confronted with some pretty abrupt 'no, unless you've reserved a table' comments when asking to eat - I know there's the fancy restaurant bit at the back, and the average age of customer is probably about 12 given the number of toddlers raoming around, but the place is essentially still, well, a pub, and one that claims to 'serve food'.

on the positive though beer has always been excellent, and some great guest ales. Still a good garden space. Still better than the Inn on the Park. Not as good as the Kenton.

a 6 from an 8.

Its right on the park with a big garden. but hold your horses: it is very expensive. Went in with a mate, ordered a bottle of (Koppenburg? is that how you spell it?) cider and a pint of Star. I handed over a tenner and got 1.90 back. Barman should have had a mask and a pistol. After all, over 4 per drink is highway robbery, London prices or not. Nice pub, roomy inside, lots of bright young things having a good time, good location, but you need deep pockets.

Went in February with about fifteen people. While some of the staff were charming, we got possibly one of the rudest barmen/waiters ever. Also the vegetarian roast consisted of a plate of mashed potato, a few green beans and a bit of roast swede. No attempt to replace the meat and not a roast dinner either. Batter puddings were charged as extra. The waiter told the waitress off for putting out too many spoons when they served dessert and we felt oh so welcome. All in all, next time we go out for a fifteen person meal we'll be taking our custom elsewhere.

hello! One of my favorites for weekend lazy hanging - this is called The Britannia, listing needs changing really.....right in the park - result.

Food is expensive but good quality - have eaten here a number of times now.

Beer is well kept, and usually two guests. Beers that is.

....garden is big and now gets busy at weekend, though not as packed as The Royal Inn can get. Nice BBQ menu running all weekend.

Be warned: this is a proper kid friendly pub - if you dont like kids stay well away.....

Eclectic mix of people and music - I've seen a few famous rockers (plus thier kids, natch) chilling in here, thankfully going untroubled by star spotters.

Hey, I dont want it to get any busier - so I'd better shut the noog up yeah? Splendid.

Now the Britannia it has managed to shake off the Chavs and changed to a nice familly orientated pub during the day and music /food in the evening. i think it is been taken over by the same people behind the Griffin in Shoreditch.

They have had teething problems but now seem to have it just right except the food is quite expensive although it is good. As it is a large pub it seems empty expect on hot days when it is packed due to beer garden. Recommended

I wonder if this place is owned by the same people as the crown the other side of the park? Same paintwork, interior decor theme, and same beer selection (good old addlestons and sharpes doom). I like the crown a lot, but the Britannia seemed a bit souless probably because it is much bigger, and was emptier (echoing the point about lack of custom mentioned below). If they fill it up it is probably a different place. It strikes me as the kind of place you could take a family during a day out in the park. It does have a park facing beer garden and serves a great pie dish. I hope it does well but my visit was unremarkable

I went here the other week and it was ok, a bit of a rough crowd but they cleared out once the clubs opened I think. The beer wasn't anything special but I go here again if I was in the area I think.

yes now called the Britannia, and trying to shed its varied and slightly rough past by the looks of things.

have been in here a few times since it was re-launched and overall have been quite impressed. half-decent range of beer including some guest ales, the food looks good (although have not got round to trying anything yet but will do so soon), and much nicer general vibe than before. The garden of this pub always used to look like a car-park so now it has a proper lawn backing onto Victoria park it should work a lot better in the summer.

the big drawback though just seems to be the lack of custom at present. I know its early days but I'm a bit worried about where this is going. I imagine the management have put in a lot of time and money and it would be a great shame if it didn't pay off, but that is my fear based on the few times i've been there. its a bit like the Inn on the Park in terms of decor/food etc, but potentially much better as its bigger, and has a nicer garden and seems a bit friendlier. Yet nobody seems to be prepared to give the place a chance (although I havent been in on a Friday/Saturday night so maybe things are busier then).

I remember writing something similar about the vietnamese restaurant up the road a few years ago when it first opened, and that place is now always busy, so I'm hoping that things pick up here too, as it could be a really good local on that side of Victoria Park (an area not blessed with many decent pubs).

so well worth a visit, and hope that it sticks around for a while.

Now renamed The Britannia. The pub was unusually busy due to the local fireworks display and the service was a shambles. Staff didn't know who was to be served next. We left.

This place was called the Queens 30 years ago and is not a nice place now.

I work in this pub part time. It has a friendly environment with pool tables and big screens. It is often missed by the public because it is not on the main road. It is directly on the park though with a huge beer garden. Food is served daily till 10pm.
