Food here is rather expensive. Good for a pint of local ale though.

As Houseman's it's quite an interesting cafe/bar. The local draught bitter is ok and fairly priced. The food is good, but rather overpriced, e.g. cheeseboard for 2 to share 14-80. There is live music, mainly folksy stuff and jazz. Friendly staff. Worth a visit.

"It needs some serious investment and a good landlord/lady to turn it around." - Your wish came true this year (2009)!
The Wine Vaults has been gutted and massively improved. Re-opened August 2009 as Housmans. It's still a pub, more-or-less, though with a bar/restaurant feel. Tables are not laid out for diners though, and there's still a bar with two handpumps. The local (and historic) brewery Three Tuns had possession of both pumps when I visited (and I think this is generally the case). Good food. Cheerful staff. Bright and airy inside. Worth a visit if in the town, either for food or ale.

As a local, I can say that this is worth avoiding. Full of kids with attitude and not a decent pint in sight. It needs some serious investment and a good landlord/lady to turn it around.

Visited on 2nd September - IT'S CLOSED DOWN !!!!!!!!
Apparently, according to some locals, it was becoming "famous" for fights on a Friday night

was dull under the old landlord and personally I don't think the new ones have done anything to write home about

Great place for real ale and for snacks. It's not easy to find a pub thesedays that gives you an alternative to a full blown meal! The pub has recently been refurbished and the new tenants, Bredan & Leanne, are always there to give a warm welcome.

The Wine Vaults is a true Phoenix from the ashes. Totally transformed from a dingy little bar into a comfortable, welcoming pub. Good beer, good atmosphere, lovely hosts.
