Another visit here the other day. Three good local real ales including Havant's Finished. Friendly staff and fellow customers. A nice place all round.

Agree with RobbyG re the beer and the staff. I was visiting friends in the area and we paid a visit last week. It was my first chance to sample the local Havant brew "Finished", although I understand it is brewed at Cowplain. I was impressed with it wherever it comes from! Bowman's Wallops was also very drinkable. Ringwood was the third beer available. The staff were very friendly, chatty and easy to get along with. The garden looked inviting but it wasn't outdoor drinking weather. Can't comment on the food as we didn't eat. Liked the pub and will definately return if I'm in the area again.

Great watering hole. Quiet during the day ( winter months) but well supported by the diners. Well kept beer (real ales) excellent pint of Guinness, my tipple. The staff are just about the best, friendly with constant smiles and banter, nothing is too much for this well trained crew. At last we have management that is hands on, hence the on going success of this country pub/restaurant. The food is top notch, maybe on the more expensive side BUT, you get what you pay for...it's excellent. GREAT Sunday lunches. Large gardens that is a real hit during the summer months. Well behaved children and pets are welcome...at last a good pub where I can take the dog. This is where the FA cup was kept during the war years, Portsmouth having won it in 1939. In my opinion, the BEST pub in the area. I think the Real Ale buffs will approve. So too the food connoisseur.

Dined here over the weekend the food was absolutely fantastic and the service staff were all really friendly. Also had a good choice of beers which is always great to see. i would definately recomend giving it a go.

After prevoiusly visiting a sister pub 'The Hurdles' a few of times and being more than satisfied at the high level of service and superbe fare. Tonight my wife and I went to 'The Bird In Hand'. The food order was executed three times incorrectly with my wife eating her main by herself and a desert that was nearly correct. The cooked food itself was poor and overpriced. I can't blame the young apologetic staff for the poor service. The blame lies in the lack of training by management.
'The Hurdles' may suffer by association if the quality and value in its sister pub does not improve

Has been renovated and new owners earlier this year. Food is brilliant and good selection of beers, including ringwood. Really nice inside and out, loads of space in garden.
Would deffo recommend to anyone

Probably one of the best pub/restaurants in Hampshire! Good beer at reasonable prices and excellent food. Their number of customers every day of the week says it all. Give it a try; you won't be disappointed.

Have been using this establishment again for the past 2 weeks, and as a restranteur of some 30 yrs experience, all i can say is what a pleasure it is to see such a well run, clean, fresh friendly public house. The staff are well trained, friendly, on the ball, and presentable. The Land lady and her partner who is the chef have in 6 weeks turned this non entity into a really first class, place to frequent. There is a good selection of real ales, lagers and very good wines at sensible prices. The food is excellent, not Michelin star but from experience the best food pub in the area. I would like to say i have no interest in this business but am commenting as an experienced outsider who travels around the south visiting local hostelries and i feel that a good place is worthy of fair comments. Do give it a try.

Visited in late May '09 since we had heard the food was good. Under the same ownership as the Hurdles at Meonstoke. The place has benefitted from a tidy up and on a mid-week evening was tolerably busy. The food was pretty much as you expect from foody pubs today, with the omnipresent Bell Pork. My complaint is that it's expensive - Restaurant prices for pub food - almost 70 quid for two with a bottle of overpriced Shiraz. Not a pub that will become a regular haunt of mine.

Under new management, reopened at Christmas. Whilst closed there was a burglary with some kitchen & dining area items stolen so no food at present
New owners [2 Marks + a Wayne] already run a few pubs, new manager goes in next week, as does new chef, and she has been with the new team for over a year so obviously knows her stuff
They have also prised a few bob out of Enterprise Inns to fit new windows & general refurb
All in all things are looking up, but only time will tell

this pub is sadly closed at present. lets hope it reopens soon with a cheery new landlord and a good chef. i for one would love to see this place busy again. but whatever any negative comments posted prior to this are now nil and viod. lets just see what the future brings.

Seems link to pic is broken

as soon as possible, goodbye, and take the moaners with you
|
Well I've been drinking there for several years and as much as Enterprise seem to be unwilling to put their hands in their pockets in terms of decoration/updating...it's not actually that bad !
Looks like mass moaning from the OAP Lunch brigade ...if you don't like it you know where the door is !

Went in - yuk inside , Had beer - not well kept , sat outside for 5 min ...what a dump....woodwork falling off, generally in bad state of repair ?
Needs to be put out of its misery - AVOID

Dark & Gloomy pub needing a full scale renovation. Was in the area on business and popped in for uninspiring lunch served by equally uninspiring and seemingly uninterested staff ?
Will avoid in future !

Gareth must have got bored as he has left & gone to Ship & Bell in the village !
That's why they've got no cook ...
anonymous - 14 Mar 2007 12:13 |
Overheard one of the staff moaning that they have NO chef ....God know's who's doing the cooking ...probably a microwave !!!!
And the beers gone up - more than elsewhere locally

Hmmm, seems Gareth's mum has been in, my experience of the food and hospitality was, sadly, quite different. Miserable Staff, no atmosphere. Won't be going again, The Rising Sun or the Bat & Ball aren't far away AND WELL WORTH THE EXTRA 50p in FUEL

Neuveau Chef - Goodbye microwave fodder , hello interesting food !
Well done Gareth - about bloody time !!

Very nice pub with a great atmosphere and friendly staff. Unlike other locals, it's a big place, with enough room for you to be on your own, quiet, chatty, raucous... The Quiz Nights on Wednesday are excellent but very busy, so get there early. Over the years, the food has been up and down, depending on the Chef, but for the past couple of years, it's definately been on the up. I don't understand the Gods Waiting Room comment. It gives the wrong impression. This isn't a kids pub, but it's far from dominoes and half a mild too. Very nice place in my opinion.

Unfortunately a number of the locals who frequent this pub appear to be inbred and do not have a life and hence their previous comments. However these oddballs are in the minority. The pub is under new ownwership which started approximately 6 months ago. The staff are friendly and the Landlady visible. The food is good and wholesome, typical country fare. Has luck would have it, the new management has started to wheadle out the unwanted clientelle. The pub has a friendly atmosphere and the future is looking good for those who enjoy the good old fashioned country pub. The Landlady has worked extremely hard since taking over. This pub wil go a long way and has a good future in front of it. If only idiots didn't run down true hard work that is begginig to pay off. So if you feel as though you would like to try the pub, do not let the negative comments put you off. You will be pleasantly surprised. For all of you from outside the area, all the locals will know by my username who I am. I will bet with you that none of them will challenge me on my comments to my face. They prefer to remain anonymous. Enjoy the pub thats what it's there for. BJ and the dog blue

Had an awful meal with my family at the weekend , served by kids who clearly were not interested and having seen the child(sorry chef) smoking his fags at the bottom of the bar won't be visiting again as he did not look too healthy ...must have been the "homecooked food" !
Try Denmead instead !
