The Wonston Arms was probably my favourite pub of 13 visited in Hampshire yesterday. It's set in a lovely English village. Parking is limited. But we found a spot just down the lane. The pub was lively and had live entertainment from a female singer. The pub itself is quite small. But on a warm day like yesterday, the doors can be opened to make the patio area an extension. Quite a few locals were enjoying the sunshine and entertainment and the pub seem to attract its fair share of eccentrics, providing additional entertainment. The landlord was a really affable guy who had only started in the pub trade a couple of years ago. He clearly takes a keen interest in his customers. 4 changing ales are served. It can be difficult to see what is on offer when locals are at the bar. But the landlord was happy to advise. The selection yesterday was Goffs Lancer, Hopback Summer Lightning, Goddards Starboard & Bowman Wallops Wood. A decent, well-run pub.

Fantastic news(bit old now!) The Wonnie is back up and sprinting. Matthew Todd is the new Owner - Landlord. Back even better than ever, total overhaul, tip top, mostly evening opening times, longer at the weekends.

Good news; The Wonston may be saved, at my last Thursday visit news was out that it is being bought to be kept as a pub! Rumours of the pub's demise were premature and a last minute saviour has emerged. The closure scheduled for the 1st Feb. has been revoked and the pub is operating as normal whilst matters are finalised. Fingers crossed, watch this space.

The beer is in good condition. The place needs a 'tidy up'. When I visited it was 'For Sale', never good seeing signs like that on a pub. Will it survive?............I fear 'owner greed' and the current market for country pubs says NO.....Ho Hum, another pub will bite the dust.

Yes The Wonston Arms is up for sale, but we are looking to but it as a community! There is a public meeting Thursday 14th July to see what interest there is in buying it as a community to keep this great pub going!! Who's interested?? Lisa

It absolutely breaks my heart to report that the 'Wonny' is up for sale. It appears that its long history as a boozer may be coming to an end as it seems most of the interest is in making it a residential property. My 2nd home for 17 amazing, event filled years, if I could afford it I would buy it. Anyone out there looking for a proper, real ale serving, drinkers, village boozer?

Haven't posted anything here for some YEARS it seems. Went to a Thursday night a couple of weeks ago - brilliant. The beer and company was as good as ever. Still not sure what the food situation is! Go in and ask!

Well I said I would report... Julie and James have had a bit of a tidy up, the firkins are now in a proper cellar, new electrics mean you don't dice with death near light fittings, and the log fire.. wow! I think there might be food around lunchtime, but I've only made it for a few lively Thursday evenings - better than ever.

Check out the photo; it tells you all you need to know. A man hitch-hiking his way out of the Twilight Zone.

The changeover was on Monday, but I missed it! I hope I get a chance to say good-bye to Harry. It looks like I'm not going to make it for the Thursday evening Jamboree either.
I will report as and when. I have a feeling that even with the best marketing in the world the world is not going to beat a path, and the new folk know that!

News Flash. This pub is no longer owned by Harry. Let's hope the new owners preserve it's unique qualities. Let us pray to Bacchus the god of drink that it doesn't turn into a Harvester type restaurant.

A classic of its era - 1950s not 1650s - quiet and select in the day but very lively evenings! Four cask beers nearly all the time.
|
This is an ale drinkers pub. It is owned by Harry and is commonly known as "Harry's". Don't expect anything at all from this pub except a fine selection of ale, and a large selection of local characters.
