Oh, and the pool tables have now been restored in the vault although, thankfully, there is still no TV or piped music.

Another cracking traditional Sam Smith's boozer with their usual bargain prices and the atmosphere of a proper pub.

This pub is rare, open fires,no jukebox,an architectural gem inside and out ,and a good stout, well worth a visit.

shittest dive ever! stayed approx 2 mins - don't take cards and have never seen lipgloss in there in their lives! Great if you are a beer drinking yocal without a gcse! don't bother

Great value for money as is with all Samuel Smith's houses. The extra stout is awesome, stronger and smoother than guinness and a heck of a lot cheaper too!! Shame they got rid of the pool tables in the vault. Its also a pity there is no jukebox or even background music.

Sorry, that should have read sitting down on the floor.

I remember the Lion from when I grew up in Heaton (over twenty years ago). My abiding memory was going in there for the first time (my mate and I were both over 18, honest), sitting down because there was no space and we were both half-cut. The landlord said "stand up lads, this isn't a doss-house".

This pub is a fair walk out of Bolton town centre but worth the trip.Friendly landlord who keeps a good pint of Samual Smiths OBB. Food is served and the place is very clean, a few couples eating when we visited on Saturday afternoon. I was told is once belonged to Bolton football legand Nat Lofthouse
