Quite busy with local geezers watching the football. Pint of Side Pocket undrinkable and obviously cloudy - one sip and I had to return it. Replaced with a poorly kept pint of Landlord.

Wide selection of real ales; Tribute, London Pride, Wherry and Nibley Ale from Severn Vale, plus one available soon - MPA by J.W.Lees. Before leaving I tried a craft beer from Purity - Longhorn IPA at 5% Abv - albeit in keg form. Good taste, a bit gassy, but nearly choked when I realised it had cost me four pound fifty. I did enjoy my omelette and chips at a more reasonable price.
Not sure what to make of the bearded bar-man. Seemed to be in a world of his own. Worth a second visit sometime.

The beer (especially the black sheep) is the reason I always come back to this place. It is evident the owners take great pride in the pub, the customers and in particular the beer. I literally had about a quarter of my pint and the landlady took it off me (I thought it was fine) but they did not think it was up to standard and replaced it with a full fresh pint. Now that is great service!!!! They are accomodating to individual people's needs such as wanting a jug glass. The decor is a typical traditional pub but I mean that as a great compliment with a selection of games in the corner. So my friends and I always have a game of cards or dominos. It is filled with nice regulars who always say hello (and the occasional dog). The only trouble is that sometimes you cant get a seat because this pub is so popular amongst ale drinkers and regulars. It is my favourite pub in the area, hence why I am having my stag do here because I will be guaranteed fantastic beer and a brilliant atmosphere.

For once, I disagree with Snarling Mallard! The welcome we received in here was fine and warm. Both staff and customers appeared down to earth. The lounge is very comfortable and has a few knick-knacks to admire. I seem to recall that the bar was more basic and had a pool table in the corner, with live football being shown on the TV. Greene King IPA, St Austell Tribute & Black Sheep Best was the limited extent of the beer range in this coaching inn. But I'd stick my neck out and rate this as the best of 10 new Hertfordshire pubs we sampled on Sunday, not that it had too much competition.

Nice old pub. Too many up-their-own-arses self righteous clientelle and the beer (Jennings Cumberland) was decidedly second rate. Not somewhere for a quiet (or a nice) pint.

A proper boozer with good ale, pool and darts.
Haven't been in for a while but last few times I went they had a cask round the back that was jolly decent.

This place has been steadily improving in recent years and the addition of a regular guest ale alongside the safe stock bitters has made it a worthwhile stop. Certainly the best boozer in Colney. Last week, they celebrated their deserved entry in the 2011 guide by selling White Dwarf at 1.99/pint. Not sure why they tried to ruin it by serving through a sparkler but this was removed by request without a fuss. "and leave it off dear, we'll be back for 2 more in a minute." Good pub.

A nice friendly pub with a decent selection of beers. They have regular live music and it's amazing how many people they can cram in there when a decent band is on.

Pleasantly surprised by this place - it has a nice atmosphere and is a comfortable enough place with a reasonable choice of beer.

The epitome of a good village pub and Id imagine it is considered the best pub in London Colney. Two distinct bars have been retained, the main public bar and a smaller saloon/snug to the left of the property. The main bar has a juke box, Sky TV, fruit & quiz machines and a room with a pool table and dartboard leading off it. The saloon bar has some nice old photos of the pub and an attractive collection of miniature bottles in a lit display cabinet. There are some tables outside on a raised patio within some well kept gardens. They advertise special jazz, quiz, curry and bingo nights and have occasional live music. Food is served noon to 3pm midweek and until 6pm on Saturdays. Beers were GK IPA, Pride and Black Sheep, the latter in excellent condition and served in branded glasses. Interesting it was also drawn using a sparkler whereas the others werent. The toilets were clean and the whole pub has a nice lived-in community feel to it. I dont normally give 9/10 to a pub with such a mainstream selection of beers but this pub does so many things right that it deserves it.

i have visited several times over the past year and have always been impressed with the quaility of the Ales and the friendliness of the staff and the regular local visitors. The bar has usually been fairly busy when I have visited. They also put on a small beer festival last year and this week-end had a couple of extra of Ales.
I plan to visit more regularly now that I can cycle from Shenley where the quality of pubs and ales has declined

There last Wednesday after disappointment at the Green Dragon. This place is a pleasant surprise. Black Sheep in extemely good condition (they had others but we didn't get to them) and absolutely lovely home made food. Evening food's only on Wednesdays which is a shame - just have to go there for lunch I suppose).
Very well maintained traditional pub run by competent and caring personnel. Sadly the location is such that I suspect it gets passed by far more often than it should.

Looks like it needs a lot of tender care!

Always thought the only decent pub in LC was the Green Dragon. Recently finding that that place is rapidly becoming a licensed restaurant (Spitfire no more), tried the Bull. There is a very pleasant snug/lounge bar and both Black Sheep & Bombardier were in good order - a big improvement on past years. Returned on a Sunday lunchtime to find cheese, pickled onions etc on the bar - nice touch (and rare these days). A little more adventure with choice of beers would make a real winner here.
