Old Crown Inn, Messingback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
My mum was born and brough up in Messing, so I thought I would take her back to the village and popped into the pub. Although the building had changed little from the 1950s, there was absolutely nowhere to sit unless you were having one of the overpriced meals - If it is locally sourced, it should be cheaper - costs far less to transport your lamb fom Essex than it does from New Zealand!. The beer I did have (Adnam's Broadside) tasted slightly off and was probably the worst pint of Broadside i have ever had. Even for a small village, there was no community spirit and seems to be full of yuppie types. A few years ago, I remember being able to read all about the village on various framed articales on the walls, however, these had all gone by my most recent visit, another move by the owners to distance the pub from the village history. It might as well rebrand itself as a restaurant because it certainly isnt a pub anymore!

I think they should re name this site- ' food in the evening' I think this would fit the bill nicely.
Can't you all go and find a site on food, people are not interested in places where you go and stuff your faces with a dozen screaming kids in tow.
Their pubs for christ sake...saddos

Oh what a night! We have just been on a Halloween evening for the children, everybody had such fun, the atmosphere was electric, I lost count of the times I heard 'wow' coming from people. The evening finished with spectacular fireworks, THANK YOU! The children in the village and surrounding villages haven't had so much fun. Brilliant party bags were given out as well. Oh, and the food was as good as ever! Despite being busy the staff were still smiling & friendly. Well done Karen & Mark many congratulations for turning the pub around.

Excellent food, beautifully presented, superb childrens menu, it's so refreshing to see a childs menu with 'proper' food on it rather than the usual sausage/burgers/nuggets etc. very friendly staff to adults and children! We often eat there and yes the locals aren't too bad either!

1st Class food, and I hope it does well, good beers, needs more variation to get attention, as in its food.

Living in Messing, it's so refreshing to have new landlords with a sense of humour and a sense of purpose who are also ABLE TO COOK. After suffering 6 years of Brake and his brother, it's wonderful to have freshly prepared food on a constantly changing menu. The landlords are both chefs so are not SO visible, but the staff are fantastic! The food is slightly pricy, HOWEVER, it's sourced locally and organic (when able) and is so beautifully prepared, it's a shame to tuck in and eat!Visit! You won't be disappointed. Just be prepared for the Locals..... we try not to bite

Very old pub, loads of atmosphere. Well kept beer (Ridleys) and excellent range of food. Some distant connections to an ancestor of George W Bush! Off the beaten track but worth the trip. Be careful, the car park is very small.
