Popped in for a couple on a weekday and pleasantly surprised at the choice and quality of the ale. Several local beers, though I went for the Oakham's JHB which was on good form. Pleasant enough place - friendly staff, would go back.

really not very good at all. I suppose you can say un-offensive, beer OK, food poor and expensive for what it is. If you wan this sort of thing then the Red Cow Allestree or any JDW is a better bet. 4/10

This is a souless / flat pack Ember Inns pub, which might as well be the near by Markeaton. The quality of beer is hit and miss. They usually have a couple of guest ales on which is nice for the more cultured drinker - however I have had quite possibly the worst pint of Landlord I've ever been served in here.
Not really a go to destination - more of one to visit if you are coming south bound into Derby on the way to better pubs such as the Five Lamps, Flower Pot, Silk Mill or the new Furnace Inn.

Ok for cheap offers on passable food in an emergency. Beer just adequate. Staff not particularly endearing.

I have just noticed on Derby City Council Environmental Heath website that The Broadway has a rating of ZERO stars in respect of food hygiene.
Zero stars indicates VERY POOR PERFORMANCE and GENERAL FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH FOOD SAFETY LEGISLATION.

Only a few years ago this was the place to be, lively clean great service lovely food. Sadly now though it's looking shabby, the once immaculate outdoor area is loosing it's battle against nature. The food is dire, once this place was full on a weeknight with diners, not anymore. The service isn't great, what's really missing is a landlord at the helm, I think the staff there turn up to work and do their bit but without direction or someone setting the standards this once fine establishment is fast going down hill.

Amazing to see how a once popular venue is now almost empty. In the 80's this was THE place for designer clothed young football hooligans to come in and see the best looking birds in Derby. The car park was full of Capri's and XR3i's. Weekends you couldn't move in the Broadway.
Now it's a dull suburban pub.

My last visit was when going for a Sunday afternoon bite to eat with a couple of friends, my wife and our new baby, who at the time was just a few weeks old. Signs were not clear that children were not welcome ( a small plaque behind the door). The barman was quite rude, telling us we could only sit outside; on a cold autumn day, and a long walk from anywhere else that does food. I can understand them not wanting children in there, but on a Sunday afternoon, with a newborn who sleeps most of the time, is not the same as toddlers running about. Disappointed with the unwelcoming reception.

Very similar to its sister pub, The Markeaton, not too far away. It gets an equal review - good beer, good food and nice atmosphere. The range of ales might be slightly better in here - they had a stout when I was in there the other day, something you don't tend to see in many chain pubs.

I started drinking in the Broadway in the early 1960s when I regularly used to call in for a pint or two, two and three nights a week , whilst waiting to catch the bus home after night school classes at Kedleston Road Technical College now the main campus of Derby University.
Then, when I moved into the area, the Broadway became my local, which was in the days when the landlord was a colourful character named Norman Graves, who drove a Pink Cadillac. Back then, the pub had great beer and a fantastic atmosphere, but since Norman left, the Broadway has progressively gone downhill. Now, after several refurbishments it is an Ember Inn, so it does serve one or two mainstream real ales, which normally arent too bad, but as with all chain pubs of this type, the food quality varies from average to very poor.
But it is the last two reviews which described the pub as plastic that have prompted me to write this because earlier this year, Ember Inns (which I guess as most of you know, is part of M&B) dug up a section of the Broadways car park for a garden and then planted PLASTIC flowers in it.
If this is the best that M&Bs management can do to attract custom, it is any wonder that they are having financial difficulties ???

Great for a big roadhouse and "plastic" pub, interesting range of real ales served by willing and friendly staff. Walk through Darley park to the nearby Abbey Inn ( but not after 15.00 as it closes in the afternoon )

A "plastic chain pub" which does however have a great heated smoking area where you can sit down.

Seriously bad in terms of interpreting so called "rules". I had a fairly good pub meal and a bottle of wine. We retired to the bar on a tuesday night which was deserted. I pulled up a stool and ordered another glass of wine with my partner. So good so far, but half way through a nervous barman told me I couldn't sit on a stool at the bar! I asked why and he said "another stupid rule we can't explain". I've decided it's down to bad management at the pub because I live in the north east where the same chain allows one to sit at the bar and enjoy a drink, of course, we wouldn't block the bar. I'm so annoyed I will not be returning.

It's nothing different to most chain pubs. Same drinks as everywhere else, same food as well. If you just want somewhere to go watch the footy and have some beers, grab a pitcher of Fosters or summat and plonk yourself in front of one of the many tellys. It's nowt special though so wouldn't suggest it for much else other than the car park outside...

Gave it a 7. Used to be a great pub with excellent food and staff. The food now is shocking, nasty dry microwave meals, and the staff seem un-interested. Once you get over that the beers are ok and its a nice pub.
|
the nice thing about the Broadway is that it is children (brat) free and adults can drink the well kept standard and guest beers in peace !. The food is fine and sensibly priced also.
|
Reasonably large pub to the northern side of Derby. A few beers on sale and usually a guest beer - all good quality. Mixed age groups. Good menu typical of an Ember Inn I think.
