New Inn, Talgarthback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
I visited the pub very recently and must say it was a real throwback to the 1970's. The new owner and the girl behing the bar were very nice and welcoming and the Betty Stoggs beer was in good order. However, it needs a real good clean up and a bit of investment to bring it into the 21st century. Everything seemed old, unkempt and dirty. I would go back for a pint if I lived around the corner but certainly not a place to travel to for lunch.

Annual visit to Talgarth as son kayaks on nearby rivers with his canoe club. Large sign outside says pub is for sale, and a bit quiet when we went in but we were starving and running out of options. However, Thai staff showed us to smart clean area round corner set out as restaurant. They had run out of ginger (a fairly key ingredient) but somehow we all had a good meal and would go back. Brains SA was a lot better than last visit thank goodness. Staff friendly and helpful.

Stayed for two nights whilst exploring the beacons and the only plus was the price of the room. Its run by Thais and maybe running pubs is not their forte. They wouldnt know a real ale if they fell in a vat of it. Too much talking and laughing in their own language made me very uncomfortable. Room was clean and breakfast was plentiful so not all bad but I couldnt in all honesty recommend this pub.

We visited this pub by chance on a Saturday afternoon after a long and tiring walk- ready for a warm welcome and some good food. We got neither! The downtrodden lady behind the bar looked cowed by the chef/manager, who had a really unpleasant attitude- our friendly overtures were met with arrogant hostility- perhaps he had had a bad day, but really! We ended up just having a sandwich (the place was empty- no surprise) I wanted a bit more time to choose as I wasn't sure about the limited choice but felt bullied into choosing the goats cheese and bacon. (When I asked if it was good- with a smile I might add- I got a sneering 'I can't believe you just asked a chef that' in reply!!) Well, it wasn't good. In fact I can say without hesitation that it was possibly the worst sandwich I have ever had. Apart from the sand one my daughter gave me aged 4. Anyway, two thick, cold wheels of goats cheese, greasy flabby bacon, soggy bread. Ugh. Pretty pub though. It might be nice with a change of manager!

Whilst staying in Talgarth, popped in to watch the Six Nations Rugby, as the nearby Castle Pub was closed for some reason. A fairly lively Saturday afternoon atmosphere, and made welcome by the staff and locals, Does Thai food, though did not try, and unfortunately Brains SA real ale was in rather poor condition. Worth a try f after sports TV and maybe food, but try Tower Hotel in centre of Talgarth if you want decent real ale..

Visited the New Inn, first time in years in Talgarth and thought that I would do the rounds.
Of the rest of the pubs in the area is that they are fundermentaly the same as they always were, which answers the question of why I have not been in Talgarth for a drink in so long!
Back to the New Inn, a wonderful oasis in the middle of what should be a waste land.
I found on entering a wonderful warm welcome, polite staff and a very chaty landlord and lady (thought the landlord was english but on talking to him found out that he was from Llantrisant area and was very well conected through historical family (a freeman of Llantrisant 'the black army').
Decoration:Leather sofas and tub chairs, dine on high back leather chairs with soft ambiant lighting. The bar its self needs a face lift which I metioned and was told that the bar is moving and completly being rebuilt in wood with wooden top. Nice carpet and wooden floors.
John Smiths was 2-30, real ales 2-50 (three pumps constant revolving guest ales), larger from 2-30 upto 2-60 for Stella! Good stock of welsh ales.
Food, all home made. I hade a wonderful Steak and Ale pie with veg 7-95 great value!
I will be visiting more often and bringing my family and friends.
Almost forgot, live music every Saturday evening, from Folk music, Rock and Roll etc....
Well done the New Inn, well done indeed!!!!

A friendly country pub under new ownership that has undergone substantial renovation (and yes the landlord & landlady are personal friends of mine!!). Excellent selection of draft beers (incl some trad ale) all well kept.
The food is absolutely excellent and all prepared from fresh ingredients on site (I've watched Nick, the chef, prepare some of it first hand!) no 'ding ding' here!!
I can also testify to the management and staff being courteous and polite and mostly sober whilst on duty (not always too sure about Nick - but he is the chef!)...
