Now an Indian restaurant/take-away (again), but at least they are keeping the bar open - evenings only though.
ferend - 22 Sep 2013 17:37
Closed and for sale...

A recent visit elicited the fact that it's back to a normal pub again. Only 2 beers on though.
ferend - 11 Feb 2013 11:24
On passing recently I see that it now specialises in Indian food...!

I must say I preferred the Fox up the road. This country pub has been commercialised a little with meals being promoted fairly heavily. The steaks did smell nice though! The single bar has stone walls and a large inglenook fireplace. All the signs leading to the 'secret garden' presumably no longer make it such a big secret. It did look quite big though. So keeping it secret would be nigh on impossible even without the signage. Beers available were Greene King IPA and Wychwood Hobgoblin.

the carpenters arms is a great family pub. very friendly staff n a great menu which is what the pub has needed for a long time. after having the refurb the pub looks warm n welcoming. good luck to jules n andre on everything they do in the pub

It's great to have a thriving local back on the doorstep. Jules and Andre have revitalised the Carpenters Arms this year. The food is good - all the family enjoy eating here, The refurb is sympathetic and creates a nice cosy atmosphere.
The guest beer is kept well and usually interesting.
A great pub for everyone to enjoy.

I have to say that I agree with Dr Bunsen, the Carps is not a bad local but the recent refurb is not particularly welcoming or cosy. The food's ok but the choice of beer leaves much to be desired. Having visited both this pub and the Fox recently, my personal preference, as a beer drinker (which is what BITE is all about) is the Fox.
As an aside, why do both pubs only offer a limited Sunday menu?

After our second visit to the newly refurbished carpenters arms - I disagree with the previous comment. This pub has still kept all traditional features and added a lovely oak floor and a carpeted nice restaurant area. There seemed to be lots of lcoals enjoying the new decor and sampling their new spring menu, which was not just based around hot rocks - but has many other choices off the rocks and a daily specials board. The take away fish and chips were simply delicious and great value at 4.95. The landlords are making a real effort with the locals and have already been involved in raising funds for the pre-school and wishes childrens trust. We also went to their first hog roast at the weekend which was attended by 200+ locals - a fantastic evening was had by all. Well done to Andre and Jules who are doing a great job - I look forward to attending the events planned (Mexican evening and Fathers Day) in June.

Although the new landlords have significantly improved the decor I can't help feeling that decoratively this pub now feels uncomfortably like a wine bar inside a traditional thatched pub. Food is now on offer - the hot rocks are a good idea but I think they are mainly of novelty value and there needs to be a lot more to the menu than these.

A good local in lots of ways but there are better options for those from outside Middle Barton.

The Carpenters has been through many managers over the last five years, it has now had a nice new re-furbishment. The new owners are here for good. They have spent alot of money with the brewery to create a lovely pub. They have kept the old features and added extra features eg a solid oak floor.
Staff are very welcoming and offer a special 'Hot Rocks Menu' and a daily specials with home cooked sunday roast deal on Sundays. Children are welcome and have a great play area in their lovely garden. Well worth a visit if you have not tried this pub for a while. The food is fabulous.

The carpenters arms in middle barton is a very friendly and inviting place to be with its cosy atmosphere and child friedly garden its a great place to relax or eat with family or friends. with the pub being under new management things are starting to look up,The bar is small but comfitable and the dining / lounge area is spacious. both bars are all well stocked and the bar workers very friendly. with its traditional charm and welcoming atmosphere i recomend that you visit this pub and see what it has to offer.

Punch Taverns are still looking for a new leaseholder for this pub. The current managers seem to have a rather indifferent attitude to food, a couple of times I've been there for lunch on a Sunday only to find the lounge/restaurant closed and no food available. A shame really, in the past it's been very good.
There is certainly an opportunity for someone enthusiastic to take over one of the pubs in Middle Barton and do well, both have had past reputations for good food and beer, I just hope one of them finds a keen new leaseholder soon!

Sadly now taken over and no idea what the new managers will do. So far not looking promising on the food front, though there are real possibilities.

The themed nights have moved from Wednesday to Friday, where they are combined with a karaoke night! Also the buffet style has given way to an unusual 3 course format, rather like having three starters in a row. Good value, and fun. A bit like tapas, only with no choice other than that it is themed.

Yum Yum! The food we had was great and the chef's sauces are highly recommended as is the bacon and brie with strawberry dressing starter - delicious! The landlord & landlady are extremely friendly and the decor in the restaurant is welcoming and beautifully done - esp the grapes :o) I would highly recommend this pub/restaurant and will certainly be booking a table in the new year.

Themed Food Night Weds 16th November 2005 is "Chinese Szechaun (Hot)". I can't go, so please go yourself. Booking is apparently appreciated.
tartrazine - 9 Nov 2005 14:35
They also do great Themed food nights most Wednesdays, at around 8 for all you can eat. We have had Mexican, Italian, "Steak Night", Czech, Thai, and Indian Curry. I hear they plan Caribbean. (I would fancy also German, French, Chinese noodle, Chinese Szechuan (hot), Dutch, Swedish Smorgasbord, Morrocan, and I woudln't be at all surprised to see any of these as they are so adventurous there)

All done fresh, buffet style starting at 7:30 in my experience. Best to phone ahead first to make sure if it is on on your chosen Wednesday and what the Theme is.

Absolutely one of the best pubs I've been in. The atmosphere is great, live music is wonderful, quiz night exceptional, and the food is an exquisite bargain.

I adore the staff and the publican makes you feel like a part of the family.
