A genuinely warm and welcoming pub. There is often music on a Saturday when the music and atmosphere is great!

Had a very nice meal and a good couple of pints of Harveys last night. All very pleasant and doing a healthy trade for a Monday night. A lovely old pub with a big open fire roaring nicely in the unseasonable cold Spring. I was curious about the old coins stuck to the ceiling but never got round to asking. Next time.

Last reviewed back in 2007, since then the pub has really come on and the food is now top notch. They are currently running a Tapas Night on Thursday evenings, with a set platter for two at 11.50, which is excellent value for money. Staff are really helpful and beer is on good form. Nice to see a pub doing well in hard times.

I don't know what the guy below was talking about because I use this pub regularly and there are two women that own it so there isn't a landlord. The food is lovely in here, I would definately recommend the sunday roast and fish and chips. I also think that the staff in this pub are really friendly and are really trying hard to turn the pub around, there is a real family feel to the place and everyone loves bob the dog.

I also had a very good meal here a few months back. There was a time when this was a really great pub, with an excellent range of beers, good food, and a flourishing clientele of local regulars. It would be nice to think that it's moving back in that direction, When we were there, the only cask beer was Harvey's, in good nick - it would be nice to see a bit more choice available. But the signs look promising.

The new owners appear to be doing a great job - stopped in for lunch during a walk and had the best food I've ever experienced in a pub. Staff were friendly too. If there was a railway station in Mayfield I would seriously go there from London to eat.

New owners who are trying hard to turn this pub around. Good beer and if you are after pub grub and a couple of pints worth visiting.

A handy stop on a circular walk from Mayfield, I liked this pub. Decent, non-pretentious food, and a very good pint of Harveys. Friendly staff didn't bat an eyelid about us eating outside in October. Didn't try the restuarant, but it looked cosy from the outside. Seemed to cater for locals and visitors quite well. Its an 'Enterprise Inns' pub, which might explain the changes in ownership. Don't understand why several pubs around Mayfield and Wadhurst (2 shut) don't seem to be doing very well. There seems to be a 'go upmarket gastro, or die' trend going on.

Staff really helpful and friendly, rooms nice & clean -- organisation was abysmal! Rooms wern't ready/didn't have loo roll etc, didn't know if we had paid deposits, what money they had taken off credit cards etc! Breakfast left something to be desired.

Today we had lunch, with the Times special offer. It was dissapointing, the service was OK but the food a sad disapointment, bland chilli con carne, reheated potatoes, fish OK. Presentation poor, vegetables hardly any. Deserts microwved and soggy, never again would not dream of paying their full price. To finish it off they had run out of decaff.

This pub has changed hands over the past few years, but now has a great landlady, very friendly and very happy for locals to bring their dogs!

Changes hands pretty frequently, but still a good local pub. They do pretty good food too.
