Good luck to who ever has taken this over, years ago a very good pub but ahell of a lot of work needs doing to it now, get rid of that ruddy great staircase for a start.
Apparently due to be refurbished and re-opened as a cafe in 2011.
The agent's board says the pub has been sold. I don't know what the plans are though.
I have met both in Gomshall, that is a bit of sport and a few runts, mind you the latter wern`t very good runners.
Mr Biker - I totally disagree. Gomshall restrunts are a rare breed and made of sterner stuff. They are actually managed by a local Nobel prize winning scarecrow; he won the prize last year for being outstanding in his field.
A sports bar in Gomshall would be good - why should us gomshallians be deprived ? Maybe we could have small pig races in it - for restrunts, like beersupper was talking about !
younglads comment is not going to happen. Sad to say i think this pub is a goner for good.
GGG Enterprise and Punch own about 20,000 pubs and they`re one of the main reasons so many are closing down ( very high rents, totally unreasonable beer prices and no back up or just plain greedy barstewards ). Younglad i take it you work for the group thats taken on this pub, wish you all the luck.A sports bar in a village pub is different to say the least, by the way whats a restrunt some kind of small pig maybe ??
Hello just going to reopen this pub asap in september there will be a little shop and restrunt down stairs and a sports bar upstairs with pool tables and live football. Keep a look out on the chalk boards outside for the reopening and the reopening party. Thanks marc
I fully endorse BeerMonsters comments although I am under the impression that Enterprise own The Compasses in Gomshall, The Price of Wales in Shere and many others locally. If so it may prove difficult to avoid Enterprise pubs, and Im not sure that Enterprise are untypical of pubcos generally.

This pub is now closed. Amen.

I have used this pub since the 1970's when it was a Young's pub and small hotel. It was classy and fantastic, separate Shire Bar (public), saloon bar and restaurant, with hotel reception at the end of the entrance hall. I moved into the village in 1984 and used this pub most days, not bad for someone who regarded Young's beers as not the best, a pint of mixed, or a Ramrod and Special if you really wanted to hit the spot! Sold by Youngs to Whitbred in the early nineties and converted into a Mulligan's fish & chip shop. What they did to that building was little more than vandalism. Were the regulars consulted? Did the village need this? I have to answer no to both and the inevitable slide began. Apart from a brief dalliance with Thai Food under Frank and Dow Cook's leadership it has never done anything remarkable since. Oh yes, the Indian was good whilst it lasted, just a few months, but at that time it was hardly a pub! I am sure it will never reopen as a pub, Enterprise claws, high rents, high business rates and high (controlled) beer prices from your landlords. The vandalism continues under another name. When will these pubco's learn? Unfortunately they are only interested in property values and profit, not preserving community pubs, or restoring beautiful listed buildings. I vow never to enter another Enterprise pub; all similar minded people, I ask that you do the same. Come back Frank indeed, at least he managed to put bums on seats and fill the place with drinkers. I have droned on for long enough!

When will these bloody pub companies learn, very high rents, beer etc.==== closed and boarded up pubs !!!! If it`s happening in this neck of the woods no pub in the country is safe. Hand crankers.
Another one bites the dust. Gone will it reopen who knows.
We drove past it this evening - the place is in total darkness and all the windows boarded up!
Looks like its going to be closed for a long while.

Doesn't do Indian anymore & the quality of the Thai is variable. Unfortunately appears to be going downhill

Probably unique in containing both a curry house and a Thai restaurant, and not at all expensive considering where we are, cheaper in fact than my local suburban ruby. Pub OKish, Shere Drop fine, though dearer than my local suburban boozer. At the end of the day there's nothing here to stop by for, if you're passing you'll be in the Compasses.
I agree with Jimmski, the food is now pretty good. However the real ale is not at all well kept, but as the clientele are mainly lager drinkers I guess this is not a concern to them.

I thought I'd update this as I originally submitted it. The Black Horse has got a little better since I last wrote. They have put in a very good Indian restaurant (originally upstairs now downstairs with the Thai) and the Thai food has improved notably over the last few months. We have started eating there again.
Poor selection of beers - not a patch on the Compasses and I'm not sure they keep them very well. However they have started selling Sheer Drop which is the Surrey Hills Brewery beer (excellent stuff!).
Used to be a Youngs pub back in the 70's absolutely marvellous pub then, sorry to hear it's not too good nowadays.
The Prince of Wales in Shere used to be a Youngs pub as well.
Sadly Youngs decided to get rid of both of them

What a shame. My great grandmother, my grandparents and mum used to own this pub/hotel back between 1944 and 1970 (I think). I've enjoyed many good stories about the antics around the pub life. The pub was renowned for its good food, wines and welcoming atmosphere. So sorry to hear its not like that now.
Cold looking not welcoming & in my view should not be classed as a pub

Eaten in the Thai restaurant twice now. The menu is not extensive but the food is good. The bar area doesn't look very inviting. We haven't tried the Indian upstairs yet.
7/10 - Thai 5/10 - Pub ?/10 - Indian

Well it is certainly a place to eat. But you will have to like Thai food if you are going to eat here! One of 3 pubs in the location, Looks like the best of the 3. Plenty of outside parking should you be driving
I agree about the Thai Restaurant but the newly opened Indian on the floor above is just fantastic - visited around 4 or 5 times now [eat in and takeaway] and have been impressed each time.
The pub seems to have a small amount of people in the bar area - sometimes playing pool. I expect the atmosphere is more "easy eating" rather than "local pub".
If I could give it minus 10 I would. Despite a lovely location, this boozer lacks almost everything, atmosphere, good beer, friendly staff, you name it!!
A pub cum Thai Restaurant. Not a massive drinking area an not a brilliant atmosphere. The Thai food is a bit so-so. But it does a lovely pint of London Pride and Floer's IPS. Nice barmaid :-)
