Large Brunning & Price pub/restaurant that despite its focus on food maintains a good ale selection. Brunning & Price Original is served. There were also a couple of ales from Wincle - Lord Lucan & Rookery Wood. In addition, they had Sharp's Doom Bar, Poynton Chinook Pale & Rooster's Mind Games. I'm not sure the barmaid knew quite what she was doing. But I ended up having one of the last servings of the Rookery Wood from the cask. However, I wouldn't have know the barrel was on its final legs. Nicely appointed, as with all branches of this chain, it was difficult to find a table not laid out for dining.

The Good- Lovely surroundings tastefully redecorated and refurbished. Good choice of beers.
The Bad - extemly busy, long wait for food - we had a risotto and a burger both of which could be described as limp and massively overpriced. Very, very disappointing especially as we had such a pleasant time in other local pubs.

Spectacular old sandstone and timber baronial hall south of Macclesfield and by the canal. It's huge and rambling with buckets of character, from the huge fireplaces (with real fires) to the log beams and myriad of rooms, including a library. Old maps and guns adorn the walls and the gents is full of enamel mid 20th Century advertisements- very pleasant. As noted it's very much an eating place and not one to include on a pub crawl, but this isn't to the detriment of the beer (it frequently wins Macc CAMRA awards, including pub of the year 2008). Cheshire Cat, Salopian Darwin's Origin and Stone Cutter plus 2 others and a cider available on my visit. Tried the first two, Cheshire Cat fine but Darwin's irresistable. Wide ranging menu not bargain basement but certainly not expensive, and the quality is reflected in the popularity. That said, it's so huge there's little need to book. There's nothing to stop you popping by for just a drink though. Newspapers and games (Scrabble, chess) provided, and staff friendly and helpful. As noted no modern 'entertainment'. Beer wise it's great and for a place to eat it's hard to beat. A must visit.

A typical example of the Brunning & Price chain - good for locally-brewed real ales and locally-sourced food, but not remotely cheap. Not the place to go for an authentic down-to-earth drinking experience.

Just reopened by new owners after a complete overhaul. Excellent food, cask ales and wine - well worth a visit! PS. No longer a hotel

Dates back to 16c, in its own grounds its also a hotel. Has great guest beers excellent food, three open fires oak beams, an original suit of armour. The owners and their staff are very friendly and it has a great atmosphere. Its a pub for grown ups no machines or wide screen TV.
