The Blackbird was our first stop on Sunday afternoon in the Newbury area. It was probably the best of the 5 pubs we went to. Locals, bar staff and the landlord were welcoming. There's a main bar area and a separate, smaller dining area off to the side. There were 3 handpulls with 2 ales on - West Berkshire Good Old Boy & Indigenous Nosey Parker. I had the Nosey Parker, which was good. A selection of board games are available. We were asked if we'd been to the nearby Watermill Theatre. But sadly we're not that cultured!

It is now open!!! I used to pop in roughly once a week for a couple of pints. It was closed for a few months but now has a new landlord, Ben, a nice chap. Ales today were West Berks (always good) and a guest, which was perfect! I do love good ale! Food has just been set up, so as yet unsampled, but will try with my family this weekend.

Visited yesterday and it was a worthwhile experience. Small but good selection of well-kept beer. Food very acceptable and service very quick. Would visit again if I was in the area. Just a shame it is not open all day.

Nice location, handy for Watermill Theatre. Well-kept beer. Pleasant garden. Food is OK if a little uninspired. Worth a visit.

this pub has gone through many changes in the last10 years but i can say that it is now the best it has ever been. I have just been in there after quite some time after finding them back in the camra real ale guide 2007. Clean , friendly the gardens are beautiful and great for kids and my dog was welcome to. xmas menu looks great and the food is not dull at all just traditional. I have a feeling this pub will need plenty of support in the winter as people seem to have the impression it is out in the sticks!! its only 2 miles or 20 minute walk from newbury town or go to the watermill theatre. too many country pubs are closing now lets try and keep this one open, it deserves our help

Great little pub and very good for real ale lovers - agree with one of the reviews about the opening hours as it's the kind of place to spend a lazy afternoon (big garden to front and rear). Food is a bit dull but honest I guess and the price reflects this. Recommend the pies and steaks.

child and baby friendly. Fantastic homecooked food this will now be my pub of choice in Newbury

The only thing stopping this pub from being the greatest pub in Newbury is the opening hours. It has fantastic (and cheap) beer, simple but tasty food and a superb beer garden. Shame it shuts at 3pm on the weekends...

Having been a frequent visitor to The blackbird in the last year I can say that the food , beer and atmosphere is second to none.(if the pub was empty on a friday night in june I would imagine that the large beer garden to the side was full!) As for it being full of "luvvies" i am sure the owners would rather have that the single minded people.

Full of 'luvvies' from the Watermill Theatre over the road. Went there 21.45 on a Friday night..place almost deserted...(which tells you all you need to know really). When the actors turned up..even we left....
Shame. Looks like it could be a nice pub if they tried.
