user reviews of the Lamb, Broad Eye

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

After visits to the Hop Pole and the newly opened Slater's Bar (neither are on the site but I'll request the latter to be added), we moved onto the Lamb. It was much quieter than other pubs we visited, with seemingly only customer. But I suspect he may have been the owner. Wells Bombardier Burning Gold was supplemented by Cameron's Strongarm. We had both and they were both fine. The pub itself is nice enough. But we were surprised how quiet it was, considering its location.

I’ve walked past this place pretty much every day for the past 10 years, so I thought today I’d have a look inside. BITE and CAMRA have given the place mixed reviews in the past, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I have to say that my worst fears were realised.

From the outside the place looked empty, but there were a few people in the deeper recesses. However, there was no-one behind the bar. This didn’t really matter to me as, although there were 4 handpumps, only one had a clip on it – for Wells Bombardier. I almost walked out at that point, but the barmaid arrived so I had a half. Have to say it was pretty foul as well. And for this I was charged £1.65 – almost £1 a pint more than the Wetherspoons down the road. This puts paid to the sign outside which said “Cask Ales from £3.20 a pint” (note the plural). Makes me wonder whether the other advertising signs (such as for a Northern Soul night) were correct as well.

I have to say that there were some plus points. The place was clean and presentable, the clientele reasonable, and there were no large screen TVs. Just a shame about the lack of beer !

It could well be another 10 years before I go in again !

I have been using the Lamb for a few years now, not every day but if I'm in Stafford I do like to call in there. 4 handpulls on. The Bombardier is usually on form as it seems to be their most popular beer. Sharp's Doombar was on the last couple of times Ive been in. The pub is what it is, a town pub, very handy for the bus stops outside. They have showers for the truck drivers parked up over the road. The regulars in there are the friendliest you will find, as are the staff, there is always some good banter going on.

One of the nicest pubs in Stafford.

A local's pub in town on a busy road opposite Sainsburys. Had a rugby themed feel to it (probably as the six nations is on at present). Four ales on with Hyde's Spalsh & Dash the only unusual one. It was reasonable enough though nothing special.

Went in recently and the beer was excellent. Bombardier is not a favourite but this was on top form. It would have been a great improvement if one of the customers hadn't muttered "f***s sake" when I asked to be excused whilst trying to get past to the bar. I apologize to that customer for using his public house.

I used to really like this pub six or seven years ago, or so. It had good cheap food and excellent pint of Banks's Mild; A friendly pub that took a healthy advantage of men avoiding shopping at the local Sainsbury's, and lorry drivers from the local Lorry park. These days? well it's a Good Beer Guide pub, supposedly with a good reputation but whenever I go in it seems very clicky and unwelcoming. Access to the bar is awkward because of the regulars perched there. The bar maid was loud and foul mouthed to the point of irritation. My pint was less than good, I have not had a perfect pint in here for a couple of years now. Good Beer Guide? or a case of who you know?

The Slaughtered Lamb, more like. Clearly a locals' pub, with a few odd characters knocking around. A couple of bizarre conversations, but mostly affable. Those of you who have read Bill Bryson's "Notes from a Small Island" will recognise the place.

I had a good pint of Brains's Reverend James and a Courage Best chaser. No food on despite the sign outside saying there is. The landlord gave us a recommendation for somewhere to eat but I wouldn't trust him again on that one.

Worth a quick pint on a crawl as their beer is very well kept and they really do know what they're doing.
