Booked a birthday dinner for 16 people here on a Saturday. The woman on the phone was very friendly and helpful, and the back room that we ended up in was lovely, but:
1) when we arrived our tables hadn't been reserved (which they sorted out fairly quickly, although the people chucked off the tables looked pretty unhappy);
2) all of the real ales, which was one of the key reasons we went there, were off, leaving us only with Guinness and lager;
3) the food came out over the course of an hour, which meant that some people were just getting their food as others' plates were being cleared! ; and
4) despite being assured by a chap on the phone that they'd be open until at least midnight, they stopped serving at 10.50 and chucked us out shortly thereafter... bearing in mind that we'd only just finished our drawn-out supper!

I had the mispleasure of going here recently. It was horrendous. Dull, loud music, a clientele straight from Footballers Wives and, then, the bar staff - drunk, serving their mates, seemingly not bothered about people waiting and then laughing when a guy, politely, told them to "sort it out". It wasn't even that busy in there, but it took a good 15-20 minutes to get served and even then you were served with little attention.

Utterly devoid of character, humour..anything really. The worst pub I've ever been in in my life.

Sadly have to concur with the last 2 reviewers. The original staff have moved on. Most evenings now there is loud music played by a 'dj' that means if you actually want to talk to someone you have to go outside. Staff seem to vanish at a whim. That said the Landlord is a ok and always personable - his staff less so. 12 months on from a decent opening and good intentions it has reverted to a formula that gets a certain crowd in and puts money in the tills.

No longer a thumbs up from me.

Lets face it you can get beer in any old pub- the reason I go to certain pubs rather than others is atmosphere and service. Well the service was less than impressive- so bad infact that the vibe bacame toxic as most patrons were getting upset with the average wait time for service being over a quarter of an hour. To make matters worse the staff was extreemley rude and patronising- but what can I say they are only acting by example as the manager was the worst of the lot! This pub is clearly out of control and I will not be visiting 'The Pelican' again.

I used to enjoy coming to this pub after work. On a Thursday they have 'Dice night' where you play the bar staff for your drinks. However, having been there recently after a fair stint away, I and ALL of my friends who i'd persuaded to go there, were actually angry by the time we left! The staff were plain rude, except the lady on duty who seemed to be holding the fort and trying to apease the customers. Even who I believed to be the manager, was insulting. It was a busy evening but no busier than when i've been before, but each one of us waited over 15 minutes to get served, by that time some had given up - it was a shambles. Several other customers seemed to confront them on the issue but were ignored. I wouldn't go back there again and the same goes for all the people I was with that night!

Just re opened after yet another refurb. I saw that they were selling real aleand the pub is very local to me. I tried a pint of which was very indifferent London Pride and found that it was 50 pence more than pubs like the Warrington charges for a well kept pint. I suppose that in a short time it will change hands yet again.

Now re-opened. Serving food and the same beers as the previous landlord. Gone are the DJ's and live music and they are trying to keep it as a pub that serves good food. There was a lot of building work and a refurb although to be honest you would be hard pushed to tell where that has gone on, it is as if they have taken out the last bar and then put it back.

I wish them well but always get the feeling this is a troubled location for many reasons.

If you are looking for somewhere a bit more chilled than the usual suspects to escape the masses you can't go wrong

Yes its been shut a few weeks, I hear there may have been a VAT problem. Shame really as the latest team of staff really seemed to have turned it round.Live music Thursdays were rocking and the weekend DJs were fun, especially Luke and Local Dose from the Faith crew. Just hope it reopens soon as the other pubs nearby arent nearly so much fun.

I have also seen this pub change hands and clientele over the years. The quiz nite is a lot of fun even if you are not competing and the live music on Thursdays has improved to a good standard of open mike acts.( was a bit ropey when it first started, you kinda felt you had to applaud the acts for trying, aaah bless!) They still pour London Pride and they have oscure beers like Poretti from Italy and others( I am a Jack and coke girl myself). They have DJ Luke on Friday nights playing old skool and I hear they are about to sort out a DJ for Satureday nights soon.I reccomend you check it out and whatever floats your boat will have you bopping to the tunes or bolting for the door. You decide.

Forgot to add the transitions over the last 7 years have seen it go from old mans earthy pub, to Organic pub which was seriously bright and blidning with light (over priced food and odd beers and wine no one had heard of) to Gastro Pub that started off well as a decent place to either eat or drink but fell away, to current incarnation.
Flasheart - 1 Oct 2006 10:42
Not sure what the point of posting such a negative review of a pub that has changed hands 4 times in the 7 years i have been drinking there.

However after about a 6 month closure the Pelican has re-opened. Sure its brighter but the clientele seem a little more interested in beer than abusing their bodies with other substances which was a problem before.

Does a good pint of Pride and a selection of the usual suspects in terms of lagers. Not eaten there.

They do have an upstairs bar for functions that also have a pool table - sadly this is not available for use when you don't hire the upstairs bar.

They have regular DJ's and quiz evenings which aren't bad. Slowly building up a new set of regulars its not a bad pub.

Remember going to this pub a good 10 years ago with my brother. One of those places that as soon as you went through the door you wanted to turn round and go back out but pride took control and you saunter up to the bar. Rough as hell. Sat down with our drinks. For some reason one of the locals was convinced we were Old Bill and sat down with us and started giving us the once over. He made it quite plain that our custom wasn't welcome. Haven't been back since but guess I should give it another try.

Has reopened. We passed by and noticed there was Pride on tap. The lighting is VERY bright so wear shades!

Appears to be shut at the mo.

This place used to be so rough that you couldn't get a pint and had to drink from the can,........before it was done up,.............sorry,..just wanted to share with the group.

Its ok now though,..a little bit bo ho, but not sufficiently bo ho to make it a no go.

Went there last Friday night, there's a very relaxed feel to this place, the music is playing away and everyone looks like they're having a great time. The bar staff are young and funky, the food is amazing, met the chef, a guy called Terence, what a gem, knows his food and how to mingle. Definately worth a look.
