please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Since my last review we have been back twice & are returning again this weekend. The landlord goes the extra mile, even taking the mickey out of us by putting on a Pompey tablecloth. We are Southampton supporters.

Beer still great & in top condition, as is the food. Looking forward to Sunday.

Still rates a 9. Could have been higher if he supported a decent team. Saying that what happened to ours in the off season.

It is a little over two years since we last visited the Brushmakers. It is great to be able to report that the pub was even better than last time we came. No grumpy young waitress , all the staff were brilliant.
The nitty gritty. Excellent food with real veg. I had the pigeon breast. The chowder got rave reviews. The local beer was in perfect condition. All this beside a roaring fire.

Definitely my kind of pub. Our thanks to the entertaining landlord, looking forward to our next visit.

If you like your pubs with a comfy feel & bags of charter you will enjoy Brushmakers.

My rating moves up to a 9

Decent, unpretentious country pub. Honest food at an honest price, excellent beer. I just hope the horrible yahoos in their Aston Martins never descend on it.

Highly attractive pub in a lovely location. Beer is from the Upham Brewery down the road plus guests. Haven't tried the food.

We took on board the previous review which stated that the dining area of the pub could be a bit cramped when making a booking at the Brushmakers. I could see that with a full house the chairs of one table would be right up against the chairs of the next table. Do like us, armed with that info make sure you ask for a table where you will not be too cramped when making a booking. Consequently we had no trouble.

Ok the Nitty Gritty. On arrival the young staff behind the bar were reasonably efficient but there was only a hint of a smile. On the plus side the service was quick & the real Ales 'of which there were several to choose from' including one of my favourites ESP were very well kept & the price of around 3.00 is pretty much the norm for these parts.

The food is certainly a cut above what is available from other local pubs, with the exception of the cottage pie which was under seasoned. The partridge was brilliant As was the crab. In all a good pub with an older bar area & modern dining room, open fires & really friendly waiting staff. This is one we shall definitely return to. My rating, just about worth an 8 & the bar staff managed a bigger smile when I left a tip.

Ale too dear, but good food though no better than the average available at most of the better rural pubs around here (try White Horse in BW or Brickmakers in Swanmore). The pub is a victim of its size to be honest, tables are pretty crammed in. Nice rural retreat for a pint though.

Came here with a friend to eat lunch. The beer was of excellent quality and the food equally good. Genial barman who greeted us, and said goodbye very pleasantly. Only complaint (which nobody can do anything about) was it was a bit cramped at a very small table for two. But this says something for the pub's popularity!

All in all a well deserved good rating.

Still a friendly pub but lacking in finesse since the leaving of Tony and Gill who were landlord and lady of the old school, hope it picks up

We had a party of about 50 there last night on an organised event in the marquee over the garden. They did a good curry and a good chilli with all the trimmings for us as a party. Good selection of ales but.........................

BUT!!!! they wanted to charge me 2.20 yes 2.20 for a pint of lime and soda.

I objected at length that this was extortion of the highest order. The barmaid checked with the boss who I think was busy in the kitchen doing the finishing touches to our food and she said he said only 1.50 then. I objected but paid mainly as a lot of our party were desperate to get served in this lovely little pub.

shhhhhh don't tell anyone is the impression you get when you find this country boozer tucked away in a small village surprisingly not very far away from the rest of the world! This is the high water mark of country pubs. Well kept beer and cider in well worn, slightly fraying at the edges comfortable surroundings will keep you coming back time and again. The welcome is genuine and accommodating no matter whether you came in your tractor or your generic suburb mobile. If that isn't enough the menu is so good you turn up without a booking at your peril at popular Sunday lunch type moments. If anyone ever comes to visit me in South Hampshire I will always find an excuse to come here and enjoy the Brush. In the handbook on how to reach pub perfection you will find this marevellous place spoken about in reverential tones. So the story goes, the brewery wanted to sell the pub to developers so the good folk of the village got together and bought it in the spirt of anarcho-syndicalist affection, installed the manager on the basis that he kept a good range of beers, wines and spirits and made his money on the food. Sounds good to me whether its true or not (I advise you to research yourself at the premises). Other pubs who pretend to aspire to such lofty ideals take note and come to the Brush to see how it's really done.

Very difficult to find but a real treat once found!
I would recommend going in the summer so you can sit in the garden. Otherwise it is very crowded inside, plus the garden has great views over the country side-great if you consider how close it is to Southampton.
The food was delicious and there was a wide range to choose from, ranging from the usual pub food to some dishes more extravagant. A huge price range as well.
Very much enjoyed my afternoon in the country at this pub.

Superb, friendly pub with good mix of customers, good beer, friendly staff and excellent local food, specialising in game in season. A great place for a session lunchtimes or evenings if you enjoy a busy country pub.

Great pub to cycle to, as well as walk. The place gets really busy on a Sunday, but that's not surprising given the quality of the food. I'll definitely be making a return trip some day. Hopefully soon.
